It was going to be a hot day; it was already 95 degrees at 8am, with the high predicted to be 112. Anything over 106 could stop a match according to the lead official. The 4.5 Women's Doubles Finals originally scheduled for 3pm was pushed up to 10am in an effort to miss the hottest part of the day. Dee and Julie were facing familiar rivals from Julie's league team. They'd be accustomed to the heat and were decent players. They'd been seen at their previous matches, trying to learn what they'd be facing. The only thing that might work for Dee and Julie would be to change things up a bit. Julie usually served first and then Dee, Dee favored the ad court and Julie the deuce. The plan would be to switch during the first set and return to the previous for the second. The rest of their game remained pretty solid, but they had to win the first set.
Jill Vanderbilt (a lefty) and Kate Crawford a right-hander was a good match, and because Jill was a lefty, the sun wouldn't be an issue for them, even when it was high in the sky. The match began with Jill and Kate winning the toss and electing to serve, but uncharacteristically they lost the first game due to having prepared to face their opponents in the opposite positions on the court and missing key shots.
Dee had been serving well all weekend and today would be no different. She had tremendous hook on her slice and when her opponents attempted to compensate by moving to their right, Dee would serve up the tee with a hard flat cannonball. However, Jill's lefty status was proving to be a challenge for Julie, and she dropped her serve, but they were still up 3-1. When Julie used her back spin drop shot and it bounced back over the net before Kate could get to it there was a heated exchange that the official allowed to go on for too long and didn't penalize either team. Jill told Dee to
"bite me!"
and defiantly Dee scowled and replied for both to
"eat me!"
It appeared that the exchange had taken the fight out of the two, Dee and Julie won the first set 6-3. But Dee suspected something more nefarious was at play. What she didn't know was that her strongly worded insult had an effect on the two women. Though both were happily married with normal marital sex lives. Never had either considered sex with another woman. But now, if only subconsciously they were both curious. As they watched Dee dart across the court, only with considerable effort did they manage to keep at bay thoughts and images of Dee naked. Then thoughts of what it would be like to eat pussy for the first time would emerge.
As a result, at the beginning of the second set when it was legal to switch service order and court position, (ad and deuce court), it wasn't until the third game did they notice and change their strategy. By that time, they were down 0-3.
It was very hot now, at least 101 degrees and each team was hydrating themselves well and sweating profusely. Dee and Julie had selected white and yellow colors for their matching tennis shirts and tops. Like most white materials when wet they become a bit translucent, not much, but enough that if the right areas became wet, it could be a treat for the right person.
Since both Dee and Julie were large breasted they wore heavy duty bras to secure their breasts in place. Their sweat was collecting in their bra cups and causing their nipples to harden and protrude. It acted to further distract Jill and Kate. Both were small breasted and envious of women more endowed, their thoughts turned to images of large naked breasts with firm nipples. They didn't win another game, despite strong rallies.
Jill and Kate were gracious losers and took pictures holding their smaller trophies as they smiled with Dee and Julie.
"Good match, Kate, Jill. It could have gone either way,"
Dee said though she knew better, and Jill offered her own magnanimous comments. "
You both are too kind; you kicked our asses. Congratulations. Perhaps we can have lunch some time and learn your secret,"
Jill said and stroked a stray lock of hair from her face.
"Our only chance was in that first set, but then we lost it all in the second,"
Kate said and licked her lips, as she pulled her bag to her shoulder. Their defeated opponents headed for their cars with their second-place trophies leaving Dee and Julie to discuss what they had just observed.
"Were they flirting with us,"
Julie asked.
"I think they were, perhaps a bit. We'll take them up on lunch if we win our second final. Agreed?"
Smiling she agreed.
They had an hour before their final match of the tournament, in the Women's 50 Doubles. As they walked off the court they were greeted by Wendy and Gail. Almost in unison they offered their congratulations.
"We got here too late to see the match, but we heard you dominated, 6-4, 6-1. Way to go,"
Gail said.
"Thanks,"
Dee replied smiling and looking quizzically at both Wendy and Gail. "
I didn't know you two knew each other."
Gail and Wendy giggled.
"Long story, short version is we met at Lifetime,"
Gail said giving Dee a knowing glance and then changed the subject.
"What time is your 50s?"
Dee and Julie left Wendy and Gail to return to their room to change and rest, while Gail showed Wendy around the complex. They would be in the front row to watch the finals. In their hotel room, with only an hour to rest, Dee and Julie showered together but resisted the temptation to play. Cooled by the shower, they dressed again in matching outfits, ate light snacks and waited until the last possible moments to return to Darling Tennis Center for their final match.
With most of the other matches completed, a crowd had grown to watch the final. Their opponents were from Phoenix Arizona where temperatures exceeded even those of Las Vegas, sometimes by as much as five degrees. Las Vegas was the high desert and Phoenix the low, determined by elevation, which explained the variance. As a result, their opponents were acclimated to the heat.
The Women's Doubles 50's meant that you had to be at least 50 years old to participate but could be older. Dee didn't look anywhere near her 65 years. But she was well known in the community, through her civic involvement and her tennis activity. Julie was just over 50 and also well-known and respected.
Their opponents were not, however they checked out as true to their ratings and age to play in this division. Anne Smith and Judy Jones of Peoria Arizona, a suburb just west of Phoenix, they went by the moniker
"Alias Smith and Jones"
. Like the Western television series, they both grew up watching on ABC in the early 70's, they were a dynamic pair having partnered for over ten years and won numerous tournaments large and small. Anne Smith was a small quick blonde with a consistent serve and a strong net game. Judy Jones, who went by the nickname Jay-Jay, an African American with a fair complexion, wearing her hair in long braids and was just under six feet tall with a decent topspin serve and good court sense. Both women were married and had children in college.
The chair umpire walked out to the court holding new Penn neon green tennis balls, the name "Penn" imprinted in bold black letters and the number "4" imprinted below. The pre-match meeting was the same as with previous matches, the official reviewed the rules focusing on players making their own calls and the chair overruling, if necessary.
Asking the Phoenix team to call the toss, he flipped a coin to determine who would serve first, then handed out the new tennis balls and told the players they had a five-minute warm up. With only a minute remaining in the warmup, he announced the players.
"Ladies and gentlemen, this Final match of the Women's Doubles 50s division is the best-of-three tie-break sets, to the right of the chair, from Peoria Arizona Anne Smith and Judy Jones."
Applause was strong from all around the court.
"To the left of the chair, from Las Vegas Nevada, Dee Newman and Julie Betts. Smith and Jones won the toss and chose to serve. Time!"
As the women returned to their seats to sip water and towel off, their friends and family cheered them on, as promised Gail and Wendy were in the front row at the net which gave them a good view of the court.
"Dee and Julie, you got this,"
they cheered.
A little after 3pm, the sun was high and wouldn't be a factor for two hours when it began to set. All hoped it wouldn't take that long. Dee didn't count on that and wanted to put their best server in the sun in the event of a long match and would defend from the south side of the court. The winds were calm and also wouldn't be an issue.
