Starting out is always easy. Sustaining can be the hard part. Apologies, there isn't anything sexy in this one as I'm still in the setup which is by far the most important part. I may make that up in the next chapter. I may not. We'll see how it goes.

Thank you all for the words of encouragement.

In truth, for any one thing to happen, there are infinite pieces that must fit together in a precise pattern. When you see something, you see the end result. Look a little and you will see the lines of how that result started. Look deeper and you will find more. Keep looking and you get lost in the infinite sequences that followed a precise line. Call it fate. Call it destiny. Call it the hand of God at work. There was infinite uncertainty before that reached this certainty. This is what IS. This is what I have to work with. -- the Analyst

CH 2

Satiated for the moment, I looked around, beginning to asses my current situation.

I was laying buck naked on a concrete patio under the park shelter. My clothes lay strewn about, haphazardly tossed in the heat of the moment.

On the one side, I had an amazing brunette snuggled into my arm. Her hair was a disaster, clothes were half on, fully disheveled and somewhat damp. On top of that, she was struggling to catch her breath, sounding like she had run a sprint or a marathon.

Thoroughly fucked

were the words that came to mind, appropriately so.

On the other side, her

mother

lay propped up on one elbow smiling and obviously happy at the current state of affairs. She too was buck naked though seemingly having recovered slightly from her pleasurable experience.

"We should probably get going. We have lots to do and the day is waning." Her eyes glittered as she said the words.

I glanced over at her daughter, eyes closed, her breath slowly returning to normal.

"Let's give her a moment to recover," she suggested, handing me a folded shirt and gesturing to put it under Toni's head.

I took the hint and did as she suggested, kissing Toni on the cheek as I stood to get up. Whether or not we would become

family

was yet to be seen, but she definitely was endearing herself to me.

Anya had already started gathering and reapplying the hastily discarded vestments so I followed suit. I got my first real look at her. She stood at maybe 5'6" and couldn't have been more than 140 lbs. She had pale skin and a clear complexion, giving the impression of someone who appreciated the indoors. Her hands and lithe frame both told a story of long days of hard work while slight curves muted this story showing recent time in more comfortable circumstances. Anya's black hair was shiny and gave the appearance of being well kept, reaching down to her shoulder blades. As she turned, she looked at me. While Toni's eyes were that of sky blue, Anya's were a shade of gray, like the sea after a storm.

"So," I started, momentarily losing myself in their perfection. "I can quite see that you're more than slightly comfortable with me, but seriously, tell me more about you. I know we have a connection. I've seen and felt the traces that I think

I

left."

I'm not sure that the smile on her face could have become much brighter, but she gave an effort nonetheless.

"It's odd, I remember every detail of today." She said. "You made sure that we would. You wanted us to remember everything for today and give us enough recollection to let us know what was coming, though not nearly as clearly." She pulled me close into her arms, frowning slightly. "No memories can compare to today's perfect recollection. Everything else is like a poor reflection. And though I know that this is merely the start of our family, I have never been as fulfilled as I am right now." Her smile returned as she talked.

I smiled as I gently pushed her away. "Yes, I keep getting that

distinct

impression. But that answers absolutely none of my questions."

Her laugh rang throughout the shelter as she started cleaning.

"Well, a woman never tells her age, but I will tell you that I am just under a year younger than your 46." I hadn't told her my age, but I guess that didn't seem to matter. "I gave birth to Toni when I was 18, after I had married. When I was first married, my husband and I lived in the farms of the clans outside of Simferopol in Crimea. Life was simple. And simple was good. It was many years of peace and happiness. And then the droughts plagued our farms for years. This brought hard times that were followed by worse. We were happy and we made due as we could. When times got too bad, we made a bargain that I prayed we would never need repay. As it turns, we repaid more than what we had planned. It wasn't what we wanted, but life has brought us much more than we could have ever dreamed.

"Toni has told you of Sergio and his family. She has told you of the fire that claimed the life of my husband. That was so much to bear for a girl barely 17. I thought that she would surely break after that night and that she would hold herself responsible for what that awful family did. But she never did. She not only remained solid, she held me together as we gathered what little money we had and sold everything but the clothes on our backs.

"Fortunately for us both, my grief numbed me and let her lead. Her belief in what I thought were dreams was the only thing that kept us going. There were many times and many days, where I was sure that we were going to fail. But she kept leading us to the right person...the first time,

every time

.

"First, it was to the bank. She knew the answer to every question the banker asked. Secret numbers and phrases to my husband's secret savings. She knew things that I had never guessed were even possible.

"From there, she led us out to the gambler around the corner. I blindly followed as she dragged me along. She bet everything she had just pulled out on a game of chance stacked heavily in favor of the dealer. She won!! I could scarcely believe it.

"Then, she bet again. I could only watch as the dealer smiled, smugly sneaking in more tricks. Again, she doubled our money. I thought the dealer would fly into a rage, but he held it in and offered her double or nothing in an effort to win his money back.

"I tried to pull her away, begging her to take what we already had and go.

"Instead, she got a dreamy smile and told me she knew this would happen and what needed to be done.

"She changed the offer. He had an old car. She offered him all of the money she had just won with her virginity as a bonus on a single draw on cards. He greedily agreed and asked what she wanted if she won.

"'The old car, a full tank of fuel, and a small portion of the money, just enough for fuel and food on our trip.'

"He could see no downside to this deal as he would end with more money than he started with and he knew the car was ready to fall apart.

"The man pulled out a marked deck and shuffled till he saw the ace of hearts. He immediately grabbed it off and told here to pull from anywhere in the deck, quickly fanning the cards to hide their secret markings.

"He put his card down just as she pulled her selection from the deck, Toni smiling brightly as she reached in.

"Somehow, she pulled out the ace of spades. It was the only card that would beat his and she hadn't even hesitated.

"Dumfounded, he handed over the keys and bade us on our way.

"From there, Toni led us to the car and out of the city. She drove past the campsites, out along roads that she had never been on before. She drove us across the border, heading west. We crossed into one country, then another, only stopping for food and fuel. We crossed in places without border checkpoints, never being questioned.

"We made it into Italy and filled up with the last of our money. Toni showed no concern at this. She just fueled and drove on again, once more down roads she should not know and never glancing at a map.

"Just as we were almost out of fuel, she pulled into an overlook in Spain. There was one other car parked there but no owner in sight. She got out, walked over to the railing. Her hand disappeared between rocks holding the wood in place, emerging with a set of keys. She placed our keys into their place and effectively traded ours for that other vehicle.

"It was there for a drug trade," she later told me. "It was important that they still have a car to drive off as they would get caught but have nothing in it while this one was hiding thousands of US dollars in the back. The drug smugglers would not be able to trace the one we left back to us.

"We drove north to a port where Toni used part of the hidden money and bought us passage on a freighter to the US. Getting out of Spain was easy. Getting into the US was where I believed we would run into trouble, but Toni found the right person again, at customs this time. She gave him our story and he was able to work the paperwork to grant us asylum, bypassing the legal hurdles barring our way.

"They were going to let us stay in the country, but that left us with only the little bit of money left from the drug dealers that we had stolen.

"Like a dream, Toni and I walked out of the US customs after over a month on the run. We were free at last but barely anything to start our new life with. She led us to the bus where we bought tickets to this city. From the bus station, we made our way to an extend stay hotel.

"The next day, I took some of the money and walked to the thrift store to purchase clothes I hoped would lead me to some type of employment other than on my back. Toni let me go, smiling as I left. It turns out that she went to gas station down the street and purchased one lottery ticket. Just one.

"It turns out, that one ticket won one of the largest Powerball awards ever. After the taxes and fees, we were left with over 100 million US dollars. We went from being in the country for less than a week and no future to having money to set us and our children for life.

"Of course, it still took us almost a month to collect all of our money," Anya grinned sheepishly, "but you would be surprised how many people are willing to let you stay for credit when they know you are rich!"

"We moved to a new hotel and got a larger hotel room that had room service while the money was sorted out.

"I had grown up with barely any money to my name so I had no idea what to do with all of this. Once again," she smiled down at the recovered beauty now beaming, "Toni came to the rescue, to

my

rescue."

"Toni acted like she had been born into this new wealth rather than the humble start my husband and I gave her. She found a bank that was willing to both house and protect our money as well as advise on how to invest it, grow it.

"She found our realtor and the house we now live in. The realtor was both surprised at her knowledge of the first house she showed as well as the willingness to pay cash immediately on entering.

"Another month in the hotel and we were welcomed into our new home."

Children's voices suddenly penetrated the hanging quilts acting walls separating us from the outside, reminding us that while we were hidden from view, we were no longer alone in the park.

"Come," Anya said, "help me pack up. I will tell you the rest later"

I reached down and helped Toni to her feet. She straightened herself as I began to load up the food into the small cooler and cart she had brought. Once Toni was presentable, Anya began to pull down the quilts. Together they managed to make a much smaller stack than I thought possible considering the 3 open walls of the shelter.

Toni grabbed a small bowl of water from the faucet and quenched the remaining embers in the fireplace.

I grabbed the cart handle, heading towards the parking lot.

"Where did you park?"

"I took an Uber here to set up. Toni took one to where you picked her earlier to wait for you."

"I'm still trying to get over how you put all of your faith in me being in the exact place at the exact time for some randomized computer algorithm to select me as the driver to come and pick you up."

Toni laughed out loud while Anya snorted, very unladylike.

"We didn't." said Anya. "We put our faith in memories of how everything fell into place. We put our faith in what you showed us, in

you.

"

"Trust me when I say, I'm definitely not worth all of it. I'm going to screw up." I responded quietly. I had figured that out in no uncertain terms long.

Toni smirked, "Oh, we know that!! I already know I've got some scars headed my direction that have your name written all over. Unfortunately for us both, I know that trying to avoid them won't work and will actually make things harder on us all. But don't worry too much,

mama

gets you back for it."

I glanced uncertainly at Anya as I unlocked my small SUV. I had to drop one of the middle seats to load the cart.

Anya wiggled her eyebrows and shook her finger at me, giggling. I took that to mean that whatever scars the future held were not too serious.

Hopefully...

Anya climbed in back and shut the door to get situated.

Toni put the last of her items in the trunk behind her mother. As I reached up to close the tailgate, Toni closed the distance. She wrapped me in her arms and looked up. She couldn't have been more than about 5'2" but her grip around my sides belied the hidden athlete.

"I've never lost control like I did today with you," she told me. "Knowing it was coming was

nothing

compared to

cumming

like that. I can't wait to get you into bed."

I put my hand behind her head pulling her toward me then leaned down and kissed her gently. I could feel as much as hear the low rumble in her chest.

"Let's go before I take you again here and now," she growled as I broke off the kiss.

I looked around before deciding not to risk that little bit of temptation just yet.

We loaded up and pulled out. Anya gave me directions to a much nicer area just north of the city. Much to my surprise, it was an older neighborhood and the house was turn of the century stone masonry. When built, it had to have been the most auspicious in the neighborhood, complete with a gatehouse that really was the size of a smaller house.

"It sits on 10 acres, fully fenced in. There is a small lake out back and a large garden," Anya began with a smile. "It was a small fortune, but you've always told us how much you appreciated our choice, especially considering the space inside!!"

"So, take me on the nickel tour," I grinned back.

We parked my car outside of the 3-car garage, making sure not to block anyone in, and entered through the front double doors, leaving the cart loaded in the car.

The vestibule was quite spacious, double circular stairs on either side of the room leading to a second-floor landing and hallway. Black slate tiles on the floor accentuated the natural maple tones in the woodworking. Doorways to the left, right, and directly ahead showed carpeted rooms.

"To your left," Anya began to head in that direction, "this is the formal dining room." Centered was a 12-person table, illuminated by the natural light from the wall length windows. Along the far wall, glass fronted cabinetry was filled with dinnerware and drawers below with the appropriate tableware. Several large paintings hung on the walls to either side of the archway. There was a delicious aroma wafting from what had to be the kitchen and the sound of someone singing to an up tempo pop song.

I followed my ears and my nose.

In the kitchen, with her back to us, someone with blonde hair was bouncing from foot to foot, hands hidden in front of her, staying busy with the task at hand. Oversize headphones with cat ears adorned her head as she crooned along to the music.

Wanting to get a feeling of who she was and what she was, I half-closed my eyes and reached out my mind. Time slowed to a crawl once more as she slightly turned in our direction.

Joy... passion

were the senses that first rose to the surface of her thoughts.

Student...college...Nursing...?...worry...finals...

These words were hidden in the depths of her surface thoughts.

I was getting the base feelings, but nothing like what I had seen in Toni and Anya.

Why?

I asked myself. I reached for her subconscious like I had before. Instead of a fog, I only found a curtain. Pushing on it, I felt resistance. I reached for her

trust

, trying to turn it up. It barely budged, no matter how much effort I put in.

I turned my thoughts inward.

She couldn't trust me; she hadn't even seen me! Not only that, I felt none of the familiarity radiating from the two lovely women behind me. I knew that they exhibited some of my past/future influence. Maybe this was more of a test to see how I did on a clean canvass?

Well, tests are made to be passed.

I reached out to her again. This time, I laid out a plan and let time resume. First, increase enthusiasm. Second, increase desire to sing. Next, just a little tug to turn here half way around. Finally, increase external perception at

just the right....

Apparently, the song reached the crescendo and she turned away from the dinner preparations to belt out the lyrics into the knife she was cutting with. She noticed me out of the corner of her eye.

"Gaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!"

she screamed out and threw the only thing she had in her hand at me. '

Unfortunately for me, that was the knife.

A rather amazing but deadly looking steel blade with a beautifully ingrained wooden handle,

I thought as it flew at me.

What did I miss this? I guess it doesn't matter now. This was fun anyway...

As my mind pulled back into myself, I noticed that I had missed something else. There was movement to my right and sound. Toni's laughter could almost be described as a cackle as she gleefully swung her hand out past my face, neatly smacking the blade and deflecting it into the wall to my right.

"And there's the first one!"

Her laughter continued as she pulled a small handkerchief from a hidden pocket and began to wrap her hand. The blood tinged the white wrap in short order.

"I've got it!" laughed Anya, opening a drawer in the cupboard and pulling out a rather large (and astoundingly well stocked) first aid kit.

I could only sit in amazement as they began tending to the wound, practiced efficiency evident.

Anya notice with a sideways glance. "You always say 'it's not a project unless someone bleeds, so it's now official!"

"It's a Project!!" mother and daughter sang out in unison..

Yep, I do say that...

I thought, chagrined.

The emergency seemingly in good hands, I looked back to my previous focus.

"Who are

you

and why are

you

here?" she stifled out. Her face distraught from the damage she had caused and vision wavering between me and the mother tending her daughter.

Now, that I could see her face, I realized I recognized her. I had seen her in the mornings at my gym. She was rather hard to miss after all, and not only because of her 5'10 height. She arrived regularly at 5:30 and was always done with her workout by 6:30 sharp. Her workout

pattern

was light cardio followed by light free weights. She ended with either treadmill or stair climbing, depending on the day of the week. This was followed by disappearing into the locker room for an hour and emerging in full makeup, hair done, and nursing scrubs.

None of this was tremendously different from the dozen or so other people I joined for my daily workout. I knew each one by face and workout routine. My profession required that I not only compile mountains of data, but that I be able to quickly recognize subtle patterns and changes in these patterns. It doesn't turn off when I'm not actually at work, my mind has been a non-stop race for as long as I can remember.
