Risk and Reward
Lynne's well toned frame ate up the distance of the trail easily. The uneven ground provided little challenge to the experienced hiker although it did force her to not completely let her mind wander as she made her way towards her destination. She took a deep breath and enjoyed the smells as the air filled out her lungs. Her petite body belied the strength and athleticism that she possessed. Lynne lived for challenges. She lived to push herself past any obstacle, any risk, any challenge until she conquered and overcame it. It didn't matter how long it took or what she needed to do to achieve victory, everything was simply a matter of drive and dedication.
"Except this", whispered the small voice in the back of her mind reminding her that today's destination was a challenge that she had yet to overcome. It was an obstacle that still stood in her way and had for years now. It was one of the few things that stood as a looming failure in a very long line of successes for her. Her heart rate increased and Lynne knew that is wasn't the wooded incline that caused it. She felt her cheeks flush as her mind flashed bits and pieces of images from her previous encounters, previous failures, in front of her eyes. No. She was going to beat him this time. Beat the challenge that she herself had asked for. This was going to be the day that she reached the goal that she had set for herself.
"But do you want to win?" The fucking little voice wouldn't leave her alone and as it whispered this time it broke her concentration enough that she didn't quite lift her foot high enough and caught the top of an exposed tree root and briefly stumbled forward. She caught herself quickly but it was enough to bring out the anger. "I will win," Lynne growled out loud getting the attention of a fellow hiker coming the other direction.
"You got this!" he shouted encouragement to her as he passed.
Lynne frowned slightly, it wasn't the trail that was today's real challenge. That risk awaited her in a clearing off of a side path. That risk put everything else to shame. She crested the ridge and started down the other side looking for the old lightning split tree that marked the hidden trail. If you didn't know what to look for it was something that you could easily walk past and not even know that you had missed something. The trail began a slow curve down the gentle slope. Lynne knew that the tree was just ahead and had she really wanted to be there quickly she could have entered the trail from the other side and gotten here with no effort at all but Lynne never took the easy way when there was a chance to prove herself yet again.
She touched the scarred and cracked tree's smooth side as she turned onto the hidden and overgrown path. There were subtle signs that someone had already been down this way not long before. Although she knew who it most likely was there was that slight hint of dread that someone else had found the path and the clearing which would ruin today's encounter. Picking up the pace slightly she wound her way deeper along the lush trail. The thick foliage not only blocked sight but it dampened the surrounding sounds as well. The chirping of the birds was still crystal clear but even the faint sounds of cars disappeared and the feeling of isolation crept in.
Abruptly the path thinned and opened onto a small clearing. The grass was thick and green although not overly tall. And there leaning against the large boulder that capped the far end of the clearing was her adversary. She looked him over yet again slightly offended by his out of shape body. There was a clear paunch showing a lack of discipline in enjoying foods and keeping to an exercise routine like she did. His frame was tall but slightly slouched which caused Lynne to unconsciously straighten up and pull her own shoulders back thrusting her medium sized breasts forward. How could someone who was so obviously not at his peak beat her and even more importantly how had he continued to beat her?
The man looked up as she entered the clearing and admired her athletic body and dark pixie cut hair. There was a light sheen of sweat glistening on her skin and he could tell that she had hit the trail from the far side and hiked the long way round to get to here. He expected nothing less from this young woman. "Hello Lynne," he called out.
