In the small, northern community of Brissle Bay, they loved their radio station.

The community -- a population that had never been over 10,000 people, but now sat around 6,000 - tuned in religiously to Gem 95.7, affectionately named for the diamond mining industry nearby, along with other mineral deposits in the region.

The residents had been through it all with this radio station, with every new person "not being the same as so-and-so," to the heartbreak they felt when they eventually left for a bigger market.

The station manager, Phil Weight, often wore a tacky suit in the office, but never left the house without some form of station gear on after hours. He loved the attention he got when people spotted his old Gem radio letterman jacket he's had since he started in the 1990s, complete with the neon-coloured radio logo on the back. Long-outdated, but still unmistakable.

Then, there were the sales department, a team of two men in their mid-30s, but they rarely acted like it. Chad Stevens and Ben Patrick were both blindly full of themselves, believing they were indeed the best salesmen in the world, even though everyone else at the station knew full-well this station sold itself to the local businesses and chains effortlessly.

For on-air, things weren't what they used to be. Just three people were live at Gem these days, including long-time news man Wayne Weathers, who had been in Brissle Bay for decades, coming to the end of a media career that had spanned even longer. At his peak, he was reading national news in "the big city," but wanted to settle down, at least that's what he let people believe. He had an incredible voice, but getting a word out of him off the air was near impossible. He kept to himself in the newsroom, and rarely made an appearance in public. Instead, he spent most of his time with his wife, Peggy, who owned a restaurant in town.

The morning personality was Chester Martinson, but went by his on-air personality of Chezz most of the time. He began his career at Gem, and immediately promised himself he'd move on in less than a year. Five years later, he was the morning voice most of Brissle Bay woke up to and heard on their way to work. He had fallen in love with the town.

Then, there was Kierstyn Pardi, the newest addition to the Gem team. A young-fresh-faced 20-year-old that had finished radio school five months earlier, and took the first job that she could, which landed her in Brissle Bay. She had a sweet, innocent voice, but was extremely shy. She also had an incredible body that she often had to hide at work, as a normal-looking dress or outfit with leggings would have caused Ben and Chad to spend all day in her studio bothering her. Her beautiful tanned skin came from a mix of Italian and First Nations roots, and her brown eyes were near-hypnotic.

The radio station also aired syndicated content throughout the day and weekend, which isn't out of the norm for most radio stations. Mid-days and evenings were handled elsewhere, but with Chezz on mornings, Kierstyn on afternoons, and Wayne on morning news, Gem's on-air team appeared to be set for a number of years.

That was, until it wasn't.

===

The radio station, for many years, had been locally owned. It was a small fish in a small pond, and while every now and again it was looked at by big media players, offers were always turned down.

Rumours were beginning to circulate again of another media player coming to take a look at Gem to see if the radio station would be for sale. It worried Kierstyn, who maybe thought she would have been replaced if another company swooped in.

That was until Chezz reassured her. "It's just talk," he dismissed. "There's been a few of these since I started here, and I can't imagine how many Wayne has seen since he started. Not that he'd ever tell us." He smirked.

Keirstyn laughed. She found Chezz to be incredibly nice, and if they didn't work together, she totally would have asked him out. His stubbled face, brown hair and soft blue eyes made Kierstyn swallow hard before she began a reply.

That was until Chad and Ben plowed into the studio unannounced, and uninvited.

"What's up, airheads?" Ben obnoxiously bellowed. "Got some new sponsor reads for you, because we're

awesome!"

He sang out, playing air guitar.

What an idiot,

Kierstyn thought.

"Better get those in the file, because some of them start this afternoon." Chad set them on the desk, getting a little too close to Kierstyn as he slid them to her. "You don't mind if I slide that right in, do you?" He grinned.

Kierstyn cringed at his cigarette-stained teeth and greasy orange hair. "Thanks," she muttered, taking the paper copy from him and turning away to place it in the hourly file.

"You boys have literally anything better to do?" Chezz asked. "We were in our show meeting."

"Oh, this is fun! Can we play?" Ben teased before pretending to hit the microphone button and covering his one ear. "It's Gem 95, where we play all the best music. Here's another Billie Eilish song that sucks, on Gem 95."

Ben and Chad laughed to each other while Chezz and Kierstyn rolled their eyes at each other.

"Whatever, airheads. We got more commercials to sell, because we're

awesome!"

Chad equally-obnoxiously sang out. "See ya when we see ya!"

As they slammed the studio door closed, Kierstyn turned to the computer screens in front of her. Her show started in an hour, but Chezz, who was normally long-gone by now, was still there.

"Well, before we were rudely interrupted by Dumb and Dumber," Chezz spatted, causing a giggle from Kierstyn. "I was going to ask you if you had gotten out and explored Brissle Bay at all."

Kierstyn shook her head slowly. "I've been busy settling in, so I haven't had a chance to really walk around."

"Would you have time on Saturday? I'd love to show you around if you have time." Chezz's offer seemed sincere. Kierstyn didn't know whether he was asking her out or not. "We can take the station vehicle to drive around as well. I'm not sure anyone would mind, and Phil would probably love the visibility."

Kierstyn smiled. "Sure! I'd love that! I'll meet you here at around 1:00 in the afternoon?"

As Chezz backed towards the door, he smiled. "It's a date," he smirked as he left the room.

Kierstyn gulped heavily before planting her face into her hands.

On top of being obnoxious clowns at work, Ben and Chad also lived together. Their shared radio sales salary, with commission, allowed them to afford a nicer three-bedroom apartment in downtown, about a 10-minute walk to work. Not that they ever walked, one of them always drove.

Wayne, on the other hand, lived in a beautiful old house in the older part of town. His wife, Peggy, inherited the house from her family.

Chezz had lived in the same bachelor pad for the last three years. It was small, but comfortable. It was in the bottom floor of a newer apartment, and rent was reasonable.

Kierstyn, on the other hand, struggled from the get-go with her accommodations. It's well-known that media - small-town radio in particular - does not pay tremendously well. The first place Kierstyn lived in looked amazing in the photos, but when she arrived, looked like the setting of a horror movie, complete with blood on the walls. Thankfully, her landlord-to-be was understanding, so she broke the lease before moving in. She searched for an apartment for several weeks, spending many nights in a hotel supplied by the radio station, before settling on renting a basement suite in someone's house.

With the living situation the way it was, most of her salary went to rent. The rest was spent on groceries, and the odd online order of makeup. She told herself this was going to be the best way for her to learn how to budget on her own.

During her two-year media program, Kierstyn lost both of her parents and her younger sister in a car accident. While the insurance company did pay her quite well, she promised herself she wouldn't touch any of that money until it was time to settle down and buy a house in the big centre she planned on living in one day. But as the days of zero dollars in her bank account started to build up, it was becoming apparent she was going to need to do something to make more money, or dip into savings.

Kierstyn doom-scrolled Instagram before a post from a bigger radio station popped up. It was two hosts during a normal radio break, but it was a video. She had never seen anything like it, and wondered if this was something she could bring to Gem to try to earn more money.

She flagged the post, headed for the fridge, and began making a salad for supper, happy with the idea in her mind that something could go right, and soon.

Friday came, and Kierstyn was doing her live shift on air. She felt she was having a good show, meaning her breaks sounded flawless, her bits made sense, and she didn't forget to hit stop on the music, which happened from time to time.

She had a couple of hours in her shift left before Chad came into the studio unannounced. His tacky golf shirt had a strange stain on it that Kierstyn noticed when he leaned over the desk. "So, what are we doing this weekend?" He asked confidently.

"Well, I don't know about you, but I'm busy," she dismissed him, which was met with a chuckle.

"Oh, don't be like that," Chad whined. "I notice the way you look at me. I know you want

all

of this," he gestured his hands down his skinny, borderline frail, body.

"I'm sorry, you're mistaken. Now if you could leave, I'm in the middle of my show."

Chad approached her as she turned her chair away from him. "You know, if you weren't such a tease, maybe we wouldn't have this tension between us," he smirked, placing her hand on her shoulders.

Kierstyn froze, unsure of what to do. She was brand new at this, but Chad was being a creep, and this certainly qualified for sexual harassment. That said, who would people believe?

"I... I think you should leave," Kierstyn stammered, spinning her chair and pushing him away softly.

He flashed an annoying smirk back at her. "Have it your way. You can't turn me down that easy." He blew her a kiss and left the room.

Kierstyn tensed up. She didn't notice that she missed her break as she made herself as small as possible, choking back tears.

After collecting herself, she recorded the rest of her show and snuck out of the studio and out of the building, looking behind her constantly on her way home.

"Dude, she's totally into me," Chad bragged as he sipped his beer, lounging on the couch. Ben laughed obnoxiously as his friend recounted his story that clearly violating several HR policies. "It's only a matter of time before that egg gets cracked."

"Not if I get her first!" Ben exclaimed. "I think I have a better shot than you."

To his credit, he likely did. Ben took care of himself a lot more than Chad, keeping his face shaven, his hair styled, and he was well dressed most of the time. If he didn't act like a moron most of the time, some women may have considered him a catch.

"Bullshit," Chad slapped back. "She wants a real man, one that's bold enough to be who he is."

"Speaking about bold, are you going to shower this weekend? You smell like ass today," Ben joked while Chad swung at him playfully. "I'm just saying man, maybe she wants a guy that takes care of himself a little bit better."

"May the best man win," Chad grinned. "One thing's for sure, there's no way Chezz stands a chance against us."

"Got that right!" Added Ben as they clinked their beer bottles together.

Chezz waited at the station for Kierstyn. It was approaching 1:30 already, and Kierstyn hadn't shown up yet. Just as he pulled out his phone to call her, he heard the front door open. In walked Kierstyn, wearing a tank top, black shawl, and blue jeans, something Chezz had never seen her wear, but was sure glad he had.

Fuck, she is hot.

Kierstyn smiled weakly as she saw him waiting behind the front desk. "Sorry I'm late, I had a late night, so I slept in."

"Not a problem," Chezz beamed. "Ready to get the 10-cent tour?"

"Yeah, sure," she rubbed her arms together, looking around nervously. "Before we go, can I talk to you?"

"Yeah, sure, what's up?" Chezz asked.

"Well, you see, yesterday, Chad touched me..."

"That piece of shit," Chezz cut in, before sitting back. "Sorry, continue."

"No worries, but anyway, it kind of fucked me up yesterday, and I voice tracked my last two hours. I just hope I don't get in trouble." She shuffled her feet nervously, looking ready to cry.

"Kierstyn, that's the last thing you should be worrying about," Chezz reassured her. "You can report that asshole. I can take you to Phil's house today, he takes this shit very seriously."

"Will he believe me? I mean, he just rubbed my shoulders. I don't want to cause a stir or anything."

"No, Kierstyn, that's not okay. He shouldn't be allowed to do that," Chezz got out of his chair, swirling the station vehicle keys in his fingers. "If you don't say anything, it'll only get worse."

Kierstyn's head was spinning. "I... just forget I said anything..." she looked away, nearly crying. "I just, I don't want it to wreck my career."

Chezz reached for her arm before pulling away, unsure if that was the right thing to do. He stood awkwardly, unsure of what to do. "Well, if you change your mind, let me know how I can help."

"Thanks," she choked out, wiping her eyes before looking up at him. "Ready to go?" she smiled through the tears.

Chezz looked back, worried. "Sure, first stop is the provincial park south of town."

Chezz and Kierstyn spent most of the afternoon driving around quietly until Chezz explained what something was. Kierstyn looked on intently. Chezz thought for sure she would have been on her phone after the first 20 minutes, but Kierstyn seemed genuinely interested in the tour.

It was approaching 5:00 as Chezz was driving north of town towards the diamond mine before she spoke. "You called this a date on Thursday; did you mean it?"

"Um, I, uh..." Chezz stammered, freezing up. "I guess I did. Does that make you feel uncomfortable?"

Kierstyn took a heavy breath. "I try not to date where I work. You're a great guy, but I just think it would be awkward."

"I understand," Chezz answered, and he meant it. "That's a good practice to follow, especially early in your career when you aren't sure where you'll end up."

"You're still young, why are you still in Brissle Bay?" Kierstyn asked.

"Well, part of the reason is the view you're going to see in about five minutes," Chezz looked over to her smiling. "It is the best thing I've ever seen, but it does require a bit of a walk uphill."

"How much are we talking?" Kierstyn asked, looking down at her sneakers.

"Not far," Chezz replied as he slowed down, signalling to the right towards a gravel road that swirled off of the main highway. "This is it!" He beamed.

They found a place to park in an open grass field that led to a trail opening. Chezz nearly jumped out of the vehicle while Kierstyn followed hesitantly, slowly making her way to the path behind Chezz.

Her arms stayed crossed, covering herself as much as she could. She felt much more comfortable around Chezz, but was still rattled from the events from the day before. The feeling of Chad's hands around her shoulders lingered on her body, as she struggled to shake the feeling.

Her thoughts swirled about Chad doing it again on Monday, and God forbid, what he was telling anyone he knew. Kierstyn was brand new to Brissle Bay, and really didn't want to be known as "Chad's workplace fling."

She then bumped into Chezz, who was stopped on the trail. "Careful, you'll miss the view."

She then looked to her left and saw an incredible opening in the trees, showing sharp, lush, rolling green hills, a river flowing into a sparkling lake, and tall pines lining either side. It looked like something off of a postcard, taking her breath away.

"Wow," she offered, eyes glued to the scenery.

"Look to the other side," Chezz told her. Kierstyn did exactly that, seeing the open pit to the south of the pair that seemed to never end. "That's one of the five main diamond pits in our area. The others are further north, but we really don't have enough daylight to see them today."

Kierstyn was blown away by the beauty on one side while industry dominated the other. "It's crazy how that can be so close to something so pretty."

Chezz nodded. "I see it this way; just because something looks awful, doesn't mean there isn't beauty around it. I think that works for a lot of things, including life in general."

Kierstyn nodded, slowly seeing where that would have applied to her own life. She turned back to the scenic view to the north, and watched an eagle flying through the narrow valley off in the distance. She reached for her phone to grab a picture before Chezz grabbed her wrist.

"I don't mean to tell you what to do, but please just let this live in your mind. It's always here if you want to come back," Chezz smiled weakly. "Besides, if you post it, others may come to see it, and diminish it."

Kierstyn nodded, tucking her iPhone back into her back pocket. While they proceeded back to the vehicle, she had noticed her mood had greatly improved, and she was no longer thinking about Chad.

Just as they entered the vehicle, Chad offered to buy her supper at his favourite restaurant.

"Sure, I don't see why not," she smiled.

===

They arrived at a local pub that was equal parts busy and quiet. The wait staff seemed to know Chezz, as the one server shook his hand. "Can I get you the usual, Chezz?"

"Sure, and whatever she'd like," he beamed while Kierstyn quickly browsed the menu.

"Can I get a vodka-7?"

"I'll need to see some I.D." the server said with a smile.

"Don't worry, James, she's good," Chezz reassured.

James nodded. "One house pint and one vodka-7 coming right up!"

He left while Kierstyn looked at the menu, and noticed the simplicity of the food, but with high-quality ingredients. She also looked at the price tag and was immediately taken aback. There was no way she could have paid for her meal here, at least not without saving ahead of time.

"What do you get here?" Kierstyn asked.

"I've had almost everything on the menu, and everything is incredible," Chezz smiled. "I know that's not much help, but it's the truth."

Kierstyn smiled and shook her head. "Such a great help," she teased as James arrived with their drinks.

Chezz rattled off his order without taking a look at the menu, and just as James finished writing it down, Kierstyn found a raspberry vinegarette salad that sounded delicious that included chicken. As James took the menus and rang in the order, Kierstyn and Chezz clinked their glasses and took their first sips.

===

It could have been 30 minutes or two hours, but Chezz and Kierstyn sat at the bar and chatted, ate their food, and shared stories, all the while refills arrived almost endlessly.

Kierstyn learned that Chezz was originally from Kierstyn's hometown, while Chezz learned about Kierstyn's family tragedy. They talked about radio school, their common interests, songs they liked, and songs they hated.

After at least five vodka-7's, the conversation shifted to work. "I know I shouldn't be thinking about it, but have Chad and Ben always been idiots like that?" Kierstyn laughed.

Chezz smirked and nodded. "Chad and I started on the same day, and Ben was hired not long after. They're usually fine on their own, but put them together, it's chaotic."

"Well, Ben wasn't in the room yesterday..." Kierstyn blurted before covering her mouth. "Sorry about that," she offered.

Chezz shook his head. "No need. If you ever change your mind, just know I'd be in your corner to report him."
