Filming goes a little long with the Christmas movie. I was supposed to have a week at home with Jim, but it's silly for me to fly from Toronto to LA and a day and a half later from LA to Kansas to go to the cabin. I talk it over with Jim and I am just going straight to the cabin, and not telling anyone. A day or two of peace and quiet will be nice.
I know Uncle had his guys busting their humps to get the addition done to the cabin. Auntie told me he ran into some extra work he wasn't expecting, but got it done just last week. She refuses to send me pictures. She wants me to see it in person. I try to get Anna or Amy to send me pictures. Amy says no, and in typical Anna fashion she sends me pictures of a door knob.
I drive up to the cabin, and I can see the addition on the right side as you look from the front. It looks like it's been there all along. As I get out and look closer I can see all the windows and the front door has been replaced, and it looks like a fresh coat of paint too. I smile as I look at it all. "Thank you, Unc." I think to myself.
I head inside. I see a keypad for an alarm and it's blinking. Oh Shit! I panic and look around for a code on a piece of paper. I see nothing. Oh Shit! It's blinking faster. Oh Shit! It starts going off and it's loud. I head outside with Zeena to get away from it, and my phone rings. It's Auntie.
She says four numbers. "Enter them quick." She says.
I run back inside and enter the code and hit enter, and things go silent. "Thank God." I sigh. "When did we get an alarm?" I ask.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming up early?" Auntie asks, ignoring my question.
"Filming went long. It was silly to fly to LA and then turn around and head back a day and a half later." I say.
"And your Uncle and I thought it was silly, after what recently happened for you not to have a full security system in a remote cabin in the woods. Wave hello." Auntie says.
"Wave hello? What?" I ask.
"Diagonally across from the keypad. Up by the ceiling." Says Auntie.
I look up and see a camera. I roll my eyes and wave. "Really cameras? Where else are they?" I ask.
"Don't worry. There are none in the bedrooms. Just the common areas and covering all around outside." Says Auntie.
"Everywhere outside is covered?" I ask, surprised.
I hear Uncle's voice on speaker. "360 degrees of view around the house. Two on the dock, one facing the water, one looking back at the yard and house, and it's all stored on the cloud. Spot lights on motion control, and it has an extra capacity battery backup that will power it for a week in the case of a power outage. If the code isn't entered in time a call goes out to the local police. If any motion sensor goes off we get a notice" He says.
"Isn't this a bit overkill?" I ask.
"Not when one of My Girls is attacked. Nothing is overkill and Zeena is getting a nice thick T-Bone steak when I see her." Says Uncle.
"We were going to show you all the security stuff when we went up there with you. I thought we were picking you up at the airport." Auntie says.
"You still need to get Jim. I just wanted some peace and quiet for a day or two." I say.
"You promise me you are ok?" Asks Auntie sounding concerned.
"I promise, Auntie. I am good. The brace is off. My hand feels good. Zeena & I just wanted some R&R." I say.
Uncle speaks up. "So what do you think?" He asks.
"The outside looks nice. That's all I have really seen. I am still in the living room... as you can see on the camera." I say with a smile.
"Go look down the hall, your new bedroom is on the left." Says Uncle.
I look around. The hallway for the existing bedrooms is now extended. There is a door off to the left that leads to the new master bedroom, a door straight ahead to the new bathroom and two doors on the right for two bedrooms. I walk into the master bedroom, and it's beautiful. It's big for the cabin. It's got to be about 15 feet wide and long. It's almost square, but not quite.
"Oh Auntie, I love it." I gasp in surprise. The comforter, curtains and drapes on the slider all match. The bedroom set is a beautiful dark wood. There is a long dresser with a mirror on it, a matching taller chest of drawers, and two matching nightstands. I walk into the bathroom, and there is a good sized walk in shower, (big enough for two). I think with a smile.
"Open the slider." Says Uncle.
I do and I notice a new bigger, larger deck. "Uncle!" I say in surprise.
"I noticed it was rotting so we ripped it up, and expanded the new one a bit. To make a little more room. Now wave hello again." Says Uncle.
"Seriously?" I ask, as I look around. In the corner where the addition meets the house, under the gutter is another camera with a spotlight, and down the other end of the cabin I see another light, which I am sure has a camera too. I flip the closest camera the bird.
"Hey, that wasn't nice." Says Uncle.
"I say it with love, Unc." I say.
"What are you doing for dinner?" Asks Auntie.
"I don't know. I will head into town and figure it out." I say.
"Don't buy too much. We have a bunch of groceries already ordered for pick up on our way there. Just get what you need for now." Says Auntie.
"Be careful." Says Uncle. "Take Zeena with you."
"Guys I am fine. They caught the guy and arrested him. William promised me the threat is over, but he also told me they are just a phone call away." I say.
"Just be careful." Says Auntie softly.
"I will Auntie. I promise. I Love You Both. I will see you soon." I say and I hang up. A few minutes later I get a text with a link for the security app, and the login information.
ME - Thank You, Auntie.
AUNTIE - Uncle has the water and gas on automated switches. He turned them on for you. We will explain it all to you when we get up there.
ME - Thank You Uncle
I go into town and get dinner to go, and a few things for me and Zeena for a couple of days. We get back to the cabin, and sunset is still more than an hour away. I decide to take a walk before dinner with Zeena. She needs to stretch her legs. We head down the other end of the road. I only ever drive in and out headed for town.
We get about 10 minutes down the road and a white husky appears around the corner. It runs towards Zeena, and Zeena runs towards it. They are almost nose to nose when a woman comes around the corner. "Loki." She yells, and he ignores her.
"They are good." I yell, as they start the ritual sniffing that dogs do when they meet new dogs. We both eventually catch up to our dogs that are now becoming best friends. Loki gives me a sniff and I pat his head.
"Sorry." Says the woman. "He is a dope sometimes."
"It's ok she is too, but they certainly seem to like each other." I say. "I am Mary & this is Zeena." I say as I extend my hand.
"Oh I am so sorry." She says. "I am Jane, and this dope is Loki. He wouldn't listen when I tried to call him back. He must have caught Zeena's scent."
I reach into my pocket for the little treats I take on walks. Loki tries to get it out of my hand. I pull it back. "NO! Sit." I say, and Zeena sits right down. Loki is still a dope. "Ezzie a little help." I say.
"Of course." She says and Loki sits right down.
"I give them both Zeena's hand signal and say. "Down." Zeena goes right down. Loki looks at Zeena and copies her. "Good boy." I say as I toss him a treat, and turn to Zeena. "Don't worry Zeena. You will always be my good girl." I say tossing her a treat.
The woman looks at me and smiles. "Are you like Dr Doolittle or something?"
I smile asking Ezzie. "Can I call you Dr Doolittle?"
"Absolutely Not!" She says trying not to laugh.
"I am just good with dogs. My Dad taught me years ago with my first German Shepherd." I say and look at the dogs. "Free." I say and Zeena jumps up and runs, and Loki chases her.
"So which cabin is yours?" She asks.
I point back behind us. "The one that has been being worked on for the last couple of months." I say.
"Oh that one. The guy that was there before you was a bit of a grumpy guy. It will be nice to have a friendlier face around." She says.
"Yeah my Mom's Uncle passed and he left me the cabin." I say.
"Well he wasn't that bad." She says uncomfortably.
"It's ok." I say. "He loved my Mom, but could be a bit of a grump I am told."
"Would you like to walk together? Our dogs certainly get along and like playing together." Jane says.
"Sure." I say and turn around to join Jane on her walk.
"It's about a 2 mile loop I walk." She says.
"A loop? I thought this road headed into town?" I ask as we walk.
"There is a gated access road partway down that cuts through most of the woods. Then it becomes a walking path out to the other end of the road." Says Jane.
"Lead on." I say, and she starts walking at a good pace. She is definitely walking for the exercise.
Jane is about my age. She might be a couple of years older. She has long wavy reddish blond hair down past her shoulders. And a full curvy body. Her v-neck t-shirt shows off some nice cleavage from her C cup boobs. Her stretchy shorts are formed to her hips and each butt cheek. She definitely has a full sexy ass. I suddenly feel frumpy next to her in my loose shorts and oversized t-shirt.
We trade small talk, and I don't want to talk Hollywood stuff so I tell her I work at a talent agency in LA, and I am here for a family cookout this weekend. She does real estate. She just closed on a big deal, and is taking some time off at her parents cabin. I cringe inside. Goldstar is the biggest agency in the state. Odds are she works for me. "Ezzie, does Jane work for Goldstar?" I ask.
"She does. She is one of the top sales people in the company." Says Ezzie.
I just groan in my head.
We walk the entire loop and she stops at her cabin. "This is me, well my parents." She says. "Do you want to do it again with me in the morning? I do the loop with Loki in the morning and evening."
"Sure. What time?" I ask.
"I like to sleep in. Say 9-ish. I could text you when we leave." Jane says.
"Sounds good." I say. We trade numbers, and she gives me a polite hug goodbye.
Zeena and I walk back to the cabin and we have dinner. We are sitting outside. It's very quiet except for the sounds of nature. The stars in the sky are beautiful. I jump as Zeena stands up staring at the bushes on the far end of the property. I grab her collar to hold her, and I get scared. "Ezzie?" I ask nervously.
"It's just a rabbit. She can smell it and hear it moving in the bushes." Says Ezzie softly. "You are safe, Mary."
I let Zeena go. "Free." I say and she takes off to chase the rabbit. "Thank you, Ezzie. I am sorry." I say.
"No need to apologize. It's ok to get scared when you are surprised. I promise you are in no danger here." Says Ezzie.
"I know. I thought I was past all that." I say.
