DOC'S OBEDIENCE CLINIC
Warning: This is a story about mind control. Be advised.
Jake Baker studied medicine with an emphasis on medical research. After six years of study, and two years of apprenticeship at a research laboratory, he branched out on his own. He was able to garner grants studying geriatrics. The reason he left his job so quickly was that he was pretty sure he had found something, and he didn't want to share it with the company.
He waited over a year after leaving before he announced he had found a connection between cells in the brain dealing with memory and cells that worked on auditory control. Combined, they showed promise for Alzheimer's. One of the large drug companies wanted it after they had confirmed his research. He played hard to get until the money was impossible to resist. The one thing he insisted on was a royalty of.05 per prescription for the duration of the patent before he would sell it.
He decided to build another lab. He chose Texas. He didn't want any governmental "entanglements", and he figured he had a better chance there than in California.
He stayed with the brain but left Alzheimer's alone. This time he concentrated on how the neural paths of memory intersected with the patterns that constituted rational thought. He spent several years working on this project. He got so deep into it that he needed help. Beth Cunningham had gone to school with Jake, and they knew each other. They had even worked lab experiments together. After they had graduated, she went to work for one of the large drug companies. When he needed help, he called her. She needed a change and came to work for him. He could afford her. He could afford anything he wanted, and right then, he wanted her. She was brilliant with a mind of her own. She wouldn't back away from what he was working on.
Beth came to work for him, and together the two of them combined to advance the work much faster. She was good and had thoughts of her own.
Jake wasn't sure what she was working on any given day.
Beth had liked Jake and thought he had a bright future. When she got the chance to both work with him and work on a few things she had in mind, she jumped on it. The money wasn't bad, either.
They worked day and night for the next couple of years. Jake was beginning to think there was a basic connection between the thought process and memory. Most scientists believed that rational thought just dipped into the memory whenever it needed something to fill in the gaps. He was beginning to think that rational thought was more of a control center for most areas of the brain.
He slanted his approach to find a way that the thought process could control the healing properties of the brain. He wanted to tell the brain where to send its army of antibodies in order to fight off a set of bad cells. He was hoping the brain would learn how to encircle the bad cells and allow the body to eject them out of the body.
Beth was working on theories that would make it possible for the brain to decide what to do, and then the ability to do what it thinks is needed. Jake didn't have any details about her work. He was busy with his angle, and he left her to hers.
On Monday morning, Jake came in early to start a new experiment. He got his experiment started, and decided to get a cup of coffee and see how Beth was doing today. He got his coffee and went into Beth's lab. She wasn't there, so he looked into her office.
Beth was lying on her couch. She looked asleep. "Hey, sleepy head. Wake up. What a busy weekend? Up and at 'em."
He tapped her on the shoulder, but she didn't move. It was then he noticed a large stack of papers on her coffee table. There was a letter addressed to him on the top of the stack.
This is weird. What has she done to herself this time. She had experimented on herself once before. It turned out okay, but he had warned against using people as guinea pigs until it was safe. They especially had to be careful doing anything to themselves that they might not be able to undo. He opened the letter and sat at her feet on the couch to read.
"Jake,
If you are reading this, then my experiment went horribly wrong. The papers on the table are what I've been working on for the last two years. I have been using your research to go one step further. I am trying to reprogram the brain to remove specific traits or behaviors in a person's life. Things like addiction, or psychotic behavior. I was also trying to have the brain remove the memories of such behavior so the person would have no memory of doing such things.
I am concerned about the person being out of control, so I added a safeguard to the program. I am using microscopic nano-bots as an agent to reprogram the brain. The safeguard is an agent that can be administered to the individual to stop the reprograming.
I have put a second letter at the bottom of my research. I ask that you study my research before reading that letter. If I am in a stable state, it will not hurt me to be that way for a couple of days.
Understand what I've done, and how you can reverse it before you read my second letter, and I'm sorry, Jake. I should have included you in my test so you could help me immediately.
Love
Beth"
Jake shook his head and softly rubbed her cheek. Same old Beth, always chasing the prize without regard to the consequences. Great, it would take him days to just read her research.
"Sorry, sweetie, I'm not leaving you in this state that long. I'm going to just cut to the chase and figure everything else out later."
He picked up the stack of papers and found the letter. He opened it.
"Jake,
The control I chose was your DNA. I managed to steal a little of your saliva and incorporated you as my control. You will find a syringe in the top drawer of my desk. Inject me with that, and I should be responsive to you. At least, I hope I am.
Good Luck, Love
Beth"
He looked down on her after he stood up. "You are a brilliant scientist, but you are also one crazy bitch."
