Becka was excited that Alice was getting married, but Becka hated bachelorette parties. Becka had been in two or three bridal parties by now, each one accompanied by an alcohol-fueled rager in a city that was too far away, followed by a hungover miserable car ride shortly thereafter.

But Kady, the maid of honor, had been insistent and Becka wouldn't be the one to spoil Alice's bachelorette party. Truthfully, Becka was pretty sure that Kady's favorite part of Alice getting married was a cowgirl-themed binge drinking bar crawl. It was the first thing that Kady talked about when Alice showed off a diamond ring.

Becka was sharing a hotel room with Rachel, another member of the bridal party. Rachel had been the first of the friends to get married. That had been five years ago and ever since, Rachel had been obsessed over hearing every little detail of her single friend's lives. She wanted to know who everyone was dating, if they were having sex, what type of sex they were having, and even how big their partners were in bed. Becka thought that Rachel was happiest when one of them broke up and Rachel got to hear the story. Becka was single at the moment, but she always privately thought that Rachel was evidence of how boring married life would be if Rachel was that eager to hear about non-married life.

Becka and Rachel checked into their hotel, about a quarter mile from the strip that they would be bar crawling on, and carried their bags up to their room. It was about two hours before the dinner that would kick off the night.

"Do you think anyone's gonna hook up with anyone tonight?" Rachel asked as they entered their room. She then narrowed her eyes at Becka. "Will you?"

"Nope. Not if everyone follows the rules," Becka said. "Alice said she wanted a girls night for her bachelorette party. All girls, together, no boys."

Rachel looked a little disappointed. "Yeah, but... I mean, Kady ends up in bed with people a lot." Rachel wasn't wrong, but Becka refused to take the bait.

"This is Alice's night," Becka said. "If Kady wants to go out and find a hookup, let her do it on her own weekend." Becka felt a little bit like the group 'mom' at the moment, but she genuinely did worry that sometimes Alice's special night became everyone else's excuse to do what they wanted. Becka continued, "I think if we see Kady getting cozy with someone, we run interference."

"What? I don't want to stop Kady's fun," Rachel said, appalled. 'You probably want to hear all about it tomorrow, too,' Becka thought.

"I don't want Alice to end up the last one alone at the end of the night," Becka said. "She wants a night with her girls. All her girls." She shrugged. "The bride gets what the bride wants."

Rachel mumbled something that Becka hoped was agreement, but she knew it was all she would get from her as far as commitment. Becka hoped that pulling the "bride card" would help the other girls stay in line.

They started to get dressed. Like every other bachelorette party in this city, they had agreed on a cowgirl theme. Becka took out the same outfit that she had worn for Jenny Philip's bachelorette party last year: jean shorts with frayed ends, a white tank top with a plaid short-sleeve left open over it, brown cowboy boots with swirling white engraving, and a cute brown cowboy hat. Becka looked down at the outfit in wonder for a moment. She was an accountant in real life. During bachelorette parties she cosplayed a cowgirl. She dressed quickly and took the bathroom first to do her makeup. When she came out, Rachel was also dressed.

Rachel was wearing the stereotypical "mom jeans", with a tied-off long-sleeve shirt. Her hat and boots were both a faded red and looked very worn, perhaps from a yard sale. Rachel did a quick mental inventory: How many bachelorette parties had Rachel been invited to since her own? Maybe not many? Or had the few that she had been invited to been the very rare non-cowgirl-themed ones? Becka had a momentary flash of guilt. No wonder Rachel felt so much longing to hear about single life... everyone else had seen her as an old maid and started forgetting to invite her out. Now, she was beaming in excitement.

"How do I look?" Rachel asked.

"Good," Rachel lied. "Cute, actually!"

"Thanks!" Rachel gushed. "I'm so excited. This is gonna be the best bachelorette party ever!"

--

The main strip of the city was famous for parties like this. Dozens of bars, each with live music, novelty themes, and bouncers at the door lined the street. Neon flashed from every direction, advertising drinks, celebrity endorsements, and even a mechanical bull.

"Oh! We should do the mechanical bull!" Rachel exclaimed as she registered that particular sign. It was early yet and they were weaving their way through the streets towards the restaurant Kady had sent them for dinner.

"Maybe after dinner," Alice said. "We'll see what Alice wants to do."

They were apparently the last ones there. As Becka and Rachel were led to the third-floor balcony, overlooking the thoroughfare, Kady met them.

"I saw you from up there!" Kady exclaimed, wrapping Becka in a hug before Becka had time to register her sudden appearance. "You look so cute! We're gonna have the best time tonight." Kady let go of Becka, leaned back, and let out a loud "Woooo!" It was then that Becka had the first opportunity to look at her. She was dressed in black, with her cowboy hat and boots in black leather. A black crop top clung heroically to her ample chest, while a short black leather skirt did the same with her hips. Becka saw she had chosen the dangling belly button piercing for tonight instead of her normal stud.

"You look so cute too!" Rachel exclaimed. Kady seemed to register her presence for the first time. Becka saw Kady's eyes move from the faded boots to the mom jeans to the long sleeves. Becka was afraid for a moment about what she would say, but Kady surprised her with believable grace.

"Oh my gosh, look at your boots," Kady said, perhaps a little overdone. "They're so cute! Vintage?"

"Thank you!" Rachel said, glowing in the complement and apparently oblivious to the shallowness of its sincerity. "They were my moms!"

Having that mystery solved, the three moved back to the balcony seat they had reserved. Alice was sitting at the table, glowing in the backlight of the outdoors. It illuminated her white boots, white hat, white shorts, and white button-up shirt with the sleeves rolled up. To ensure that no one missed that she was the bride of the party, a thin veil was attached to the back of her cowboy hat. With the entire outfit, she looked like an angel straight out of Hollywood old west heaven.

Next to her was the final member of their party, Alice's younger sister Samantha--or, Sammy. Alice had actually postponed the party by three weeks to get on the other side of Sammy's twenty-first birthday. She was a Junior in college and had reportedly spent the entire drive down doing homework. Sammy looked vaguely like an American flag, with bright red boots and a bright hat, both bedazzled with stars. Her shorts were bright blue, she wore a white tank top with a denim vest overtop.

The two sisters were talking together, but when Alice saw Becka and Rachel approaching, her face contorted into the oddly joyous mix of cringe and grin that only a sorority girl ever seemed to be able to perform, and let out a high-pitch squeal that drew eyes from all nearby tables. The first several words she spoke were still in the squealing pitch. If Becka hadn't known Alice for several years, she wouldn't have been able to understand.

"Eeee meeee geeeeeesh!" (oh my gosh) "Eeetts meee bashawloreeette pawteeee!"

"Yes it is!" Becka grinned. "You're gonna have so much fun!"

"We all are gonna have fun," Kady corrected. "It's gonna be a night to remember."

"And I'm so excited to be here for it!" Rachel slapped her hands together excitedly, bouncing on her heels.

The girls settled down for dinner. No sooner had the first wine been poured than Rachel was on Sammy.

"So... Sammy? Got a boyfriend at school?" Rachel asked. "It's been a while since I've seen you. You've probably had a lot."

"Oh, I don't know," Sammy shrugged. "A few, I guess."

"I remember college," Kady said. She giggled conspiratorially. "I think I spent more than half my nights sleeping in different mattresses."

"Oh, my college life isn't... isn't exactly like that," Sammy said with a laugh. "Lots of homework."

"But the parties?" Kady said, her eyebrows raised.

"And the boys?" Rachel asked.

"Some, sure... but..." Sammy shrugged. "I guess... not as much as you guys."

"We'll show you a good time tonight," Alice said with a smile. "Just us girls."

Sammy beamed at her big sister. "I'm really excited for a party with my sis. It's been too long since we've done something together." She giggled and added, "We used to have all sorts of secrets from mom and dad."

"Well tonight, let's party in a way you can't tell them about," Kady grinned.

"Here's to that!" Alice declared and wine glasses were raised around the table.

Becka glanced around the room. There were plenty of others in the restaurant, but they were definitely the loudest group. She suspected that would only be more true as the wine flowed. Becka saw a few older couples, a few tourists, another bachelorette party across the room, and one man having dinner alone. The last kept glancing at the bachelorette party as they made squealing noises of excitement with minimal provocation.

Becka turned back to Alice. "So... it's your big night. What do you want to do with it?"

Before Alice had a chance to answer, Rachel gasped suddenly. "Oh! We saw a sign for a mechanical bull! We should totally do that."

"Oh, that could be fun," Sammy said.

"Please," Kady said with a wicked grin, "I'd beat all you bitches. I can ride better than any of you."

Becka watched Alice, trying to see if this idea looked good to her, but she was simply smiling at her girls and glowing with the backlight against her veil.

"You're such a slut, Kady," Alice said, her tone light.

"Yeah? So?" Kady said. "Tonight, we're the sexiest sluts on the whole strip! Wooo!"

This brought about a chorus of "wooo"s from the other girls. Becka participated, but restrained her "woo". She would be using it a lot tonight and she needed to pace herself.

As the chorus died down, Becka tried again. "But seriously, Alice. It's your bachelorette party. What do YOU want from it?"

The table quieted and looked towards Alice, waiting for the bride to speak her will. They were all here for her at the end of the day.

"I just want a night with me girls," Alice said. "A night to remember with my favorite girls on earth." She shrugged. "That's all."

Becka, satisfied, raised another toast. "I think we can make that happen."

From the corner of her eye, Becka saw movement. The man who had been watching them lifted a drink, almost like he was toasting alongside them. Becka watched a moment longer, but the man didn't look again and eventually she forgot him.

--

Rachel got her wish: they went to the mechanical bull bar after dinner. Alice climbed on first, cheered on by her army of bridesmaids and several drunk men who appreciated the sight. Kady was no help with the innuendo of bull riding.

"Ride it like it bought you dinner!" Kady shouted.

Alice made it a respectable time before being tossed off the back. Then Rachel climbed on. She did not make it a respectable time, tumbling on the third spin. Despite her quick defeat, she was glowing and grinning when she climbed out of the cushioned pit surrounding the bull.

Kady stepped up next, casting a glance and a wink at the drunk guys enjoying the show.

"Show us how it's done," Becka called, hoping to drive Kady's attention back to the girls and away from the guys. Becka saw another man step up to the bar, watching Kady on the bull. Becka squinted, trying to see him in the poorly-lit bar. It looked like the man from the restaurant, if she wasn't mistaken.

The bull started and Kady started riding. Her toned body and large chest put on an admittedly impressive show as she bucked and swayed, trying to stay up. Kady, ever the show person, bit her lip and tossed back her head in mock ecstasy. The drunk guys roared with approval.

Becka was annoyed. She cast a nervous glance to Alice to see if she was likewise worried about losing Kady early in the night to a guy she wanted to shack up with. But Alice was cheering a loud "wooo!" and seemed unphased.

Kady lasted longer than the others on the bull, but eventually she, too, was dethroned. As she climbed off the bull, Alice approached Becka. "Your turn!" the bride-to-be said and Becka climbed into the ring.

Becka climbed up on the bull, feeling that it was much larger than it had looked from the ground. She grinned at Alice to show her that she was doing good, hoping that her nervousness didn't show through.

Becka glanced at the other girls. Sammy was right next to her sister, saying something to her. Rachel was shouting something that Becka couldn't quite understand. Behind them, Kady was leaning at a table, talking to a man. Becka felt a flicker of anger again--the one thing Alice had wanted was to spend time with her girls and Kady was already flirting with some guy--but then the bull started and Becka's mind focused on that.

It looked easy from the ground: "Just don't fall". It was harder in practice. Becka was a smaller girl and her ankles only barely started to wrap around the lower curve of the bull. She had heard somewhere that the key to bull riding was in the thighs, so she squeezed hard, but that only aided in pushing her off the top. She lasted longer than Rachel, but only just. Becka landed on the padding, rolled a little, and then popped up again. "Wooo!" she called out, and was met with an echo from Alice, Sammy, and Rachel.

Kady, however, was entirely engrossed in her conversation with the man. Becka felt another flash of rage. She climbed out of the padded pit, wishing luck to Sammy as she did. Alice's little sister hurried towards the bull and Becka accepted a hug from Alice. Then, while Alice focused on Sammy, Becka quietly stepped back.

She approached the table with Kady and her suitor. From her angle, she could see the man's back and Kady's face. Kady looked entirely captivated by the conversation--almost like she forgot that she was maid of honor at this bachelorette party entirely.

"Hey Kady," Becka said with a venomous friendliness. "Who is this man right at the beginning of Alice's special girl's night?"

The man turned and Becka was momentarily surprised to see the man from the restaurant. Then, she locked eyes with him.

Becka's head flushed and she saw stars for a moment. Down became a relative direction and she was afraid that she would tumble. Then, her mind cleared and she just saw his face, smiling warmly at her.

"Becka, this is Roy," Kady explained. "He's just offered to buy us all a round of drinks to celebrate Alice's big day."

Becka felt a flash of gratitude. She had been quick to judge, assuming that the man had seen Kady and thought she was an easy, fun lay. To be fair to Becka, there was historical precedent for that assumption. But instead, he was just being a nice guy.

"Oh! Thank you!" Becka said. "Should we get Alice over here then?"

"Oh, she's still having fun at the bull," Roy said with a wave of his hand. "Let her be for a little while. Tell me about yourself, Becka." Suddenly, it sounded like a very good idea to share with Roy.

Becka started talking. After a minute or two, Becka realized that she had been talking and not really paying attention to what she had been saying. Had she been oversharing? She felt giddy just being around Roy. He had such a positive energy.

"Hey girls, what's going on?" Rachel said, appearing at Becka's side. Roy turned her gaze to Rachel and Becka saw her flush. Soon, Rachel was talking to Roy too. Becka wasn't really listening, but Rachel talked a lot. Becka watched her get more comfortable being around Roy. Then, Alice and Sammy came over to see what was going on. Roy bought drinks while the sisters talked.

Becka noticed that the more they all shared with Roy, the more relaxed and open they felt. Roy was true to his word, ordering drinks for the girls.

After a while, Roy said, "I think I've got a nice mental impression of each of you." It may have been an odd thing to say, but Roy followed it with, "Let's get to partying!" Suddenly, they all felt like partying.

Roy ordered a round of shots for all the girls, which they quickly downed.

Rachel, excited to be a part of the party, quickly offered up, "I'll order another round!" She signaled the waitress, put in another round of shots, and looked giddily around at the group. She earned a rousing "wooo!" from the bachelorette party and a wide grin from Roy.

"I don't normally drink this much," Sammy said after the next shot. She put a hand on her chest, steadying herself against the burn as it went down.

"Well drink up, bitch!" Kady exclaimed. "Tonight's the night!"

"And look at how good your sister takes it," Roy observed mildly. Sammy looked at the two empty glasses in front of Alice, lifted her eyes up to her big sister's face, and Becka saw a resolve form in Sammy's eyes. Sammy flagged down the waiter and promptly ordered three more shots for herself.

"Three more?" Alice said with a raised eyebrow.

"Yep!" Sammy said as the shots were delivered to the table. "We're gonna have some secrets from mom and dad... just like the old days." She lifted one shot to her lips, followed it with the next, and chased it with the final. For a moment, Sammy swayed at the table, looking like she might regret her decision in the most physical way. Then, she burped, grinned, and said, "See? Just like my big sis!"

"Attagirl," Roy said with a warm smile.

"Sammy, are you sure?" Alice said, her glowing grin faltering for the first time the whole evening. "That's a lot of alcohol all at once."

"It's your bachelorette party," Roy pointed out, turning his gaze at Alice. "This is the night that you and the most important people in your life will remember for the rest of your lives." He hooked a thumb in Sammy's direction. "You don't want to remember it for how restrained you were."

Alice blinked. "You're right. You're so right." She turned to the waiter and ordered another four shots. She handed them out to Rachel, Becka, Kady, and kept one for herself. "To the memory that lasts forever!" The four girls shouted "Woo!" and downed the shots.

Rachel took a deep breath after the shot, steadied herself, and smiled widely at her friends. She turned to Roy and found him looking at her.

"It's your turn, isn't it Rachel?" Roy said. "After all, you don't want your friends to think you're old-fashioned and boring, do you? They might do things without you and leave you alone to your married, boring life to live their own excitement."

Rachel's eyes filled with fear at the statements coming out of Roy's mouth. She quickly ordered more shots for the group.

As Becka downed the shot that Rachel provided, she felt her stomach receive the shot and threaten to return it. It had been years since college, when she drank this much, and she hadn't enjoyed it much then either. She wondered for just a moment why they were doing this. They could pace themselves through bars, have fun, and probably still end up wasted.

Then Roy turned to Becka. "You're such a good friend, Becka." The words were like gospel in her brain. The alcohol helped her accept them easier, like the mental equivalent of helping a drunk friend back to their room. It was slow, but a little persistence made it hard to resist. "You want to make sure that everyone has fun, remembers what this night is about, and doesn't go too crazy. But maybe going crazy IS what this night is about. After all, Alice seems to think so. And it's her night, after all."
