Jude was in a world of his own as he made his way through the crowd. He had met up with some friends at the bar he often frequented and was lightly buzzed from the earlier alcohol. As he made his way through the congestion the young man bumped into a woman's back and apologised "Terribly sorry. Are you alright? It's a bit crowded in here tonight."
The woman turned around slightly but then let out an excited "Jude, I thought I recognised that voice. How are you? It's been so long since I saw you, look at you all grown up and all."
He paused briefly, mainly as she was the last person he expected to see in here tonight before his face shone with a bright smile as the two threw their arms around one another "Autumn, this is indeed a very pleasant surprise. I can't describe how much I've missed my favourite stepmom."
They clung together for the longest while until someone stood behind Jude and cleared their throat loudly "Favourite stepmom aye?"
Jude recognised the voice straight away and turned to this other woman pulling her into a similar hug "April, it does the heart good to see you again too. What I meant was Autumn was my favourite mid-teens stepmom, and you were my favourite late teens stepmom." This new woman pulled a strange expression in response to his bare-faced lie but she similarly burst into a bright smile.
"You are full of shit but for what it's worth I've missed you too" April replied as she clung to him in her own hug.
"I can't believe you two know each other but then in fairness, I'm still staggered that my dipshit father would treat one of you let alone both of you the way he did. I hope he apologised at the time but if he didn't, I'm sorry he cheated on both of you; you were both too good for him. The man's an idiot" Jude concluded his speech.
It was Autumn that chimed up first "We didn't know each other but became friends when your father and April split up. Dare I ask what our successor is like? I bet she's not as good as either one of us?"
Jude barked a laugh before replying "She's a complete airhead. I can feel my IQ dropping just talking to her. In all honesty, you two set the bar pretty high so I suspect there aren't many that could measure up. I despair at what he'll do next."
April steered them towards a high table that had just been vacated and she felt a little mischievous asking "So who was your favourite stepmom Autumn or me?"
Jude saw the trap immediately and held his hands up defensively as he replied "I'm not going there; you both have different qualities that I appreciated at the time and before I go further, I think we all deserve a drinks top up" he flagged a passing waitress who took their order and disappeared off to the bar.
All three had obviously consumed plenty of alcohol already this evening but it added to the jovial atmosphere. Autumn wouldn't let Jude off the hook that easily, as the drinks arrived and the waitress departed, she asked with a growing sense of daring fuelled by the alcohol "So how is your father and which of us two did you have the biggest crush on?"
Jude nearly snorted his drink out at that one. "Dad's fine although I've stopped counting the days before this airhead gets kicked into the long grass. He doesn't change unfortunately and I'm sure he's already chasing the next piece of skirt; he can never see when he's onto a good thing. It sounds like he was the same before my Mum came along and as you know he struggled to keep it in his trousers when he was with both of you. I want it understood that this particular apple has fallen a long way from that tree. I hope I've inherited my Mum's sensibilities but then the two of you had your hand in that too. Basically, I strive to be the polar opposite of him."
The nicely rounded ebony beauty leant over and gently stroked his nearest cheek "Aaaah, that's so nice of you to say. I can't speak for Autumn but I'm particularly proud of the handsome young man you've blossomed into." The tone changed to one of admonishment "However young man you managed to skirt the second half of Autumn's question."
'No, I hadn't' thought Jude, 'I was hoping not to have to go there.' Instead, he replied, turning to the redhead with the shimmering hair cascading down her shoulders "You are both so very different. Strangely, Dad went for two people with names of when they were born but you can hardly have me comparing two goddesses." Turning back to April Jude added "Autumn here was part of my life when I needed someone academic in my life whereas you were there when I first dated and needed an education in handling emotions. You two were in my life at perfect times, albeit different times."
It was now Autumn's turn to reach over and gently stroke his other cheek "I'm just pleased to see that sweet boy I knew and loved has turned into an even sweeter young man and so handsome. You weren't my own flesh and blood but I always treated you as you were. For what it's worth, like April, I'm also proud of how you've turned out and yes, thankfully you're nothing like your father."
"You've done an exceptional job of charming both of us and as much as it's nice to hear it remains; which of us did you have a crush on?" April pressed on.
