This work mostly paraphrases extracts from the novel, which are Italicized to denote contents of the novel.

Earlier in the series:

It was the University of Stellenbosch's 2005 Spring Break, and Dirk and Steve had decided to visit Dirk's home on a farm near Tzaneen, where Dirk's young, widowed stepmother (Ingrid), and his sister, Alta, lived.
