Panting hard she focused placing her feet in the right place so she doesn't fall off. The path was pretty steep. She hiked over one uneven rock after another before she finally reached the top. She took a deep breath and looked around her at the sight and the new light of as the sun, cast its rays over everything.
Her heart still continued to pound and she took one deep breath after another as they slowly subsided. She felt a buzz on her phone and she picked it up to find a text from Kevin.
Kevin: Last night was incredible. We should do that again sometime. Exactly just that.
Kevin: Soon.
She smiled and slipped the phone back in her pocket as she took in the view. Despite the confusion she was in the day before, the time she spent with Kevin the night before, helped her somehow. She sat enjoying the view for a lot longer than usual.
"What are you doing up here?" said a familiar voice from behind her. Malini turned to find Kenzie and Taylor walking towards her. "We thought you weren't coming today." Said Kenzie. "We haven't seen you in a few days."
"Well the kids came home for the holiday." Even mentioning her kids, took her back to the evening before. "They kept me pretty busy." She said as the three women shared a hug.
"Speaking of which, rumour has it that Kevin was at your place a lot during the holiday?" said Taylor. She was always a nosey one. Had the biggest ear for gossip. But the woman knew how to leverage them for her benefit. She was of course married to a lawyer. It was only a matter of time she learned a few devious tricks of her own.
"He did." Said Malini, "He's friends with my son. And this was the first time he was back, since he left for college. They were bound to spend a lot of time together." She said trying not meet Taylor's gaze.
"Sure. That's the reason." Said Taylor laughing.
"I wish he'd spend some time a lot closer to me." Said Kenzie. "I'd love to show that boy a really good time." She said in a dreamy daze.
"Yeah me too." Said Taylor.
"Oh shut up, you two." Said Malini as she moved towards the hiker's bench.
"Don't tell me you haven't noticed him the last year." Said Taylor. "He's grown a lot from a nerdy kid."
"Oh yes." said Kenzie, chiming in, "He's taken control of the store and renovated the whole place. I'm sure there's a lot of money pouring in."
"I'm sure there is." Said Taylor. "And rumour has it that he's eyeing a floozy in town." Offering a sly wink.
"What are you talking about?" said Malini, trying to hide her concern.
"Well, ever since he took control of his father's store, rumour has it that he's spending a lot of time with some woman. And apparently they've been getting along a lot closer the last couple months." Said Taylor
Malini laughed nervously, listening to the woman talk. "Well if she's any smart. She's probably mounted him a long time ago." Said Taylor before bursting into a laugh as Kenzie joined. Malini awkwardly laughed trying her best not to make eye contact with the two woman. She didn't want either one of them to know it was her.
These two women spent most their time gossiping about everyone in town. Malini knew that she was lucky that she's kept her secret for this long. And now that she's planning on spending more time with him, it's only a matter of time these two would connect the dots.
Malini chimed in trying to defend him. "I'm not sure any of that's true." she said, "He's been good friends with Arun all through school and I don't think he'd be after some..." she shrugged casually, "Floozy." She laughed.
"Honey." Said Taylor. "I can see why you think you know him. But my source is never wrong."
"Speaking of which." Said Malini, "Who is you source really?"
"Can't tell you that." Said Taylor as she turned to gaze Kenzie.
"Yeah, she doesn't talk about her." Kenzie chimed in.
"Why not?" asked Malini.
"Coz if I tell you who that is and you two go to the source yourselves, where's the fun in that?" she said. "Part of the fun in gossiping is the secret of having a credible source, honey." Said Taylor as she crossed her legs and smiled cheekily. Almost like she was flaunting in pride.
"Sure. But even if you'd tell me who it was, with all the renovation going on in my house. When do you think I'd find the time to do what you do." Said Malini, "In case you haven't noticed. My husband's home ALL the time." She said rolling her eyes.
"That is true." Said Kenzie almost pitifully.
Malini never like being pitied. She loved her husband with all her heart and she never wanted anything to come between them what so ever. But Kevin was definitely charming and handsome enough, she just couldn't resist.
"But then again." Said Malini a little mimicking Taylor a little, "I don't think you even have a source to be frank." She said. "Coz I know the guy. In fact he even spent thanks giving with me." She blurted out. "Us." She corrected herself.
"What!?" said the two women in unison.
"That's right." Said Malini, "His parent were out holidaying in some country. So, Madhan asked him to spend the holiday with us. And having known the guy the closest among the three of us. I choose not to believe that story." She said.
"Hey, I'm sure you've known him the longest out of the three of us." Said Taylor. "But here's the thing. You only know the guy who shows up to hang out with your son. The polite guy who always had a big smile when you greet him home. But my source is credible. In fact she's seen her with not just the neighbourhood floozy but a few other girls as well. Apparently he picks up a lot of women at the store."
"That explains." Said Kenzie.
"Explains what?" asked Malini.
"The sudden charming persona." She said. "Guys don't change that drastically, that quick. He's had practice. Seeing that he gets it at the store, apparently a lot of it. I mean the entire town shops at his store." Kenzie shrugged at the two women as she finished, "I mean, so do we." She added.
"Yes, that's true." Said Malini and Taylor.
