Chapter 1

: Rudy and Lisa researched cures for male infertility issues in the mouse lab at the University of Stellenbosch. They shared trips to their homes, which was both around 1800 km (1200 mi) away in the Northern Transvaal, during varsity breaks. They overnighted at Eleonore's guest house, just outside Kimberly at both ends of these breaks. On their first trip, they were lucky to pick up a room due to a cancelation. Although unplanned, they enjoyed each other during the night to such an extent, that they decided to share a room on all subsequent trips, where they had the most exciting sex of their lives. On their final trip, Rudy booked the honeymoon suite, which was fitted with an elaborate video recording system. Rudy made a recording of their trysts, which only got wilder when Ellen, Eleonore's granddaughter, joined them. Their paths split up, but both knew/hoped that their paths would cross again so they could be together for ever after.

Chapter 2

: Stacey lost her virginity to her boyfriend, Justin, shortly after turning eighteen. Their paths briefly crossed with Rudy and Lisa during an overnight stay at Eleonore's guest house - Stacey and Justin both made bookings and had to cancel one of the bookings, the one Rudy and Lisa picked up. Justin started to cheat on Stacey, and she left him when she discovered his infidelity.

Chapter 3

: It was a year later and Lisa learned that Rudy had met another woman - Helen. After she accepted her loss, she met Adrian. He was the brother of Derik, the fiancé of Sylvia, whom she befriended after she started teaching. Adrian and Derik had male infertility issues in their family, a fact of which Lisa and Sylvia were both aware off. Lisa was confident that she could extend their husbands' fertility time based on her work on cures for infertility issues in male mice.

Chapter 4

: Rudy joined the University of Pretoria's choir, where he faked a relationship with Helen, a lesbian, to avoid the advances of other women. From his side, Rudy faked the relationship to avoid the advances of female students in order to focus on his studies - he wanted to resume his relationship with Lisa as soon as possible. Chapter 5

: Soon after his marriage to Stacey, Rudy's path crossed with Lisa's again, and they figured that they lived on neighboring farms. They cheated on their spouses when their paths first cross, but decided to never cheat again. Their loyalty lasted two years, until Lisa couldn't get pregnant with Adrian. Eveline was born eight months later. Two years later, Sylvia also received a sperm donation from Rudy and got pregnant with Rian. Two months after Rudy got Sylvia pregnant, Rudy again got Lisa pregnant, this time with Adrian. Shortly after Lisa got pregnant, with Adrian. Stacey got pregnant with Hendrik (Dirk) and two years later with Aletta (Alta). The cheaters remained faithful to their respective spouses afterwards, and nobody suspected their infidelities.

Chapter 6

: Rudy was at a Cattle Breeders Seminar ten years later, where he witnessed the wife-swapping activities of other seminar attendees and their spouses over two days. Back home, Stacey (who didn't attend the seminar) was surprised by Helen, her partner, Amber, and her eighteen-year-old son, Dolf. Chapter 7

: Stacey moved into the house next to Pete's. Pete was a divorced man in his mid- to late-forties. Lisa's boasting of her wonderful sex with Rudy had haunted Stacey, and soon, Pete and Stacey started to have casual, uncommitted sex. But Pete was looking for a stable relationship, planned to get married and have children, but his dreams turned into a nightmare when he had a bad motorbike accident (a year before Stacey's arrival), which left him sterile. Although he was still interested in a stable relationship, he discovered that single mothers have issues with their Exes, and/or their in-laws. He settled with Francelle, who herself, was sterile after an abortion had gone wrong. With their new romantic arrangement, Stacey, for the first time in a long time, found true peace in her life.

Friday afternoon; early September (2002)...

"Hi Granny." Dirk looked at Maria with dejected eyes.

Dirk looked into his grandmother's eyes. "I'm old enough to stay at home, I don't want to come here every second weekend." Maria sighed. "You must realize that your mother is raising you two busy bodies on her own, on top of her full-time job. And your extracurricular activities, like your life guard commitments, are taking its toll on her. Grant her a little bit of rest, and some time off once in a while."

Jeff had heard the conversation, and an idea came to mind. He stepped closer and rubbed his hand on Dirk's head. "Say what. Why don't you help me to get my old telescope out of the store room, and see if we can get it back in operation."

Dirk's eyes flickered up as he looked at his grandfather. "A telescope? For real? Are you serious?"

Alta had also heard Jeff's suggestion. "Can you see Saturn's rings with the telescope?" She hugged her grandmother and held her lips for a kiss. After Maria had pecked a kiss, Alta continued, "Can I also help with the telescope?" She rushed over to Jeff to hug him and get a kiss on her lips.

Jeff chuckled, as he led Dirk and Alta to his study to collect the store room's key.

Maria hugged Stacey as she stepped into the house. "Hi Stace, how are you?"

Stacey pecked a kiss on her mother's lips and hugged her. "Thank you so much for taking the two busy monsters in with you. I can do with a relaxing weekend."

Maria chuckled. "Relaxing? I thought it would be a fun-filled weekend with non-stop sex!"

Stacey blushed. "Not non-stop, but Pete and I will go at it more than once. Otherwise, we'll hang out at his pool." She took her mother's hands in hers and looked her in the eyes. "Thank you for understanding. These getaway weekends with Pete bring so much peace and calm into my life. Peace that I thought was forever shattered after I discovered Rudy's betrayal."

Stacey smiled and winked at her mother. "And how is your sex life keeping up?"

Maria blushed as she looked at her daughter. "That cock ring is still doing its magic. We're at it at least twice a week. You must see the spring in your father's step when I suggest he get 'Adrian' ready.

Stacey stepped into her father's hug and pecked a kiss on his lips. "Thanks for taking them off my hands." She hugged Jeff. "I can't belief that it is already four years into our special arrangement." She pecked another kiss and stepped out of the hug. "I really appreciate your understanding."

Jeff called into the store room, "Dirk, Alta, come and say goodbye to your mother."

Alta was the first to emerge and hugged her mother. She recalled her grandmother's explanation. "Thanks for everything you are doing for us, mom. I hope you have a good, relaxing weekend."

Dirk had also emerged and hugged his mother. "You must see Gramps's big telescope!" He pecked a kiss on his mother's lips. "I love you, and don't worry about us." He stepped out of the hug and disappeared back into the store room.

Stacey looked at Jeff. "I don't think you and Mom understand how much I appreciate your support and understanding. For helping to keep my affair with Rudy under the radar." She gave him a final hug. "Goodbye, I'll have a light supper ready when you drop Dirk and Alta off on Sunday."

Hours later...

Pete paced anxiously between his kitchen and the patio, where he was ready to start the fire, in his outdoor grill, to braai beef filet and boerewors. He smiled, thinking that Stacey had started to refer to his dick as being a 'juicy boerewors', and braaiing boerewors became a tradition on their intimate weekends.

He looked at the clock on the kitchen wall as he entered the kitchen. It was almost six o'clock, and he had expected Stacey back by three. He smirked as he noticed the box with two creamed doughnuts, their traditional dessert, a reference to him 'creaming' Stacey's 'doughnut'.

He turned around and when he walked onto the patio, he looked in the direction of the garden gate in the back yard between their properties, hoping to see movement.

He realized that something must have delayed Stacey, like a flat tire, or maybe she realized that she had to do some emergency shopping. Maybe she had some emergency work at school, taking her longer than she had expected. But these small problems shouldn't cause a two-hour-plus delay, or prevent her from contacting him. A knot tied in his stomach. He had suppressed the nagging urge, for the past hour, of calling Jeff and Maria. But he suppressed the urge in favor of waiting a few more minutes, thinking that an unnecessary call may get Stacey's parents worried.

He heard a car's door closing in his driveway as he turned around on the patio to go back to the kitchen. His doorbell rang as he looked at the clock in the kitchen again. He rushed to the front door, hoping to see Stacey. He couldn't help wondering why Stacey would ring the doorbell, and not use their secret garden gate. The thought tightened the uneasy knot in his stomach.

His heart skipped a beat as he saw Jeff at the front door. Jeff's shoulders were slumped, his eyes downcast and his hands clenched into fists by his sides. Jeff looked as if he had aged twenty years.

Pete extended his hand, hesitantly, to greet Jeff. "Hallo Jeff, where's Stacey?"

Jeff took Pete's hand and shook his head as he looked up to face Pete. "Stacey... She's... gone." Jeff sobbed and tears welled up in his eyes, running down his cheeks. "Stacey's... dead."

Pete could feel the power leaving his legs and grabbed onto the door's frame for support. He took a deep breath to regain strength. He took Jeff's arm to lead him, both of them, on unsteady legs, into the house.

Jeff's face awash with tears, wanting to provide comfort, but knowing that nothing he could say would take away the anguish of the moment. He almost fell onto the three-seater and looked at Pete as he sat down next to him. "Car accident... A semi-truck had skipped the robot."

Pete was in denial. "Are you sure?"

Jeff's shoulders jerked in a sob. He nodded as he couldn't speak. He took a few shallow breaths before he managed to take a deep breath, he knew he had to say something. "I came... I came straight from the morgue. They called me to identify her. They told me it was instant. At least... At least she didn't suffer."

Pete took Jeff's hand and sensed Jeff's tight grip on his hand, looking for strength. "And the kids?"

Jeff smiled bravely and nodded. "They're safe. They were with us. Stace... she dropped them off so she could be with you... They're in shock... But they're safe."

Guilt crept into Pete's mind, Stacey could still have been alive if it wasn't for their romantic get-togethers. He squeezed Jeff's hand. "I'm sorry... She could still have been alive... if - "

Jeff stopped Pete. "Don't blame yourself. Your... your romance, your special weekends and getaways, they gave Stace so much joy these past years. She was a nervous wreck when she discovered how Rudy had cheated on her. But you... You helped her so much. We're glad that she died while happy, with peace in her heart."

Tuesday late afternoon...

Since Kathy received the news of Stacey's untimely death, many thoughts had churned through her mind. She was particularly perplexed by Stacey's wish, in the event of her death, that Kathy should attend her memorial service in person.

She looked at Rudy, her cousin and Stacey's ex-husband, who had picked her up at the Cape Town airport, with the burning desire to find out if he knew the reason behind Stacey's strange request. Thinking it wasn't an appropriate time, her thoughts returned to the list of her acquaintances living in Cape Town.

Pete's name continuously invaded her thoughts, in spite of her efforts to avoid thinking of him. It made Kathy to stare blankly to the road in front of her.

Pete had relocated to Cape Town almost fifteen years ago. He was a good neighbor, but he wanted to make a fresh start after his messy divorce from his cheating wife.

The rest was, as the saying goes, history.

The two, feeling guilty about their tryst, were resolute to be faithful to their respective spouses - in Pete's case, at least until he could prove that Sonya was cheating on him. In spite of her growing amorous feelings for Pete, Kathy remained faithful to Andy. Pete, for his part, respected Kathy's wish to be truthful to Andy, and avoided awkward situations where he would be alone with Kathy. The few times that they did find themselves alone in each other's company, they were drawn to each other, but they managed to fight their desire for intimacy.

A year later, Andy, who was still oblivious of Kathy's earlier infidelity, learned of Pete's relocation plans, and invited Pete over for a farewell supper. Pete's relocation was triggered by his divorce from Sonya.
