I want to apologize up front for the grammar and spelling mistakes that I'm sure are in here. I was unable to find a editor, and anytime I try to use editing software my story gets bounced for AI.

All Characters in this story are 18+ years old.

This is going to be a very slow burn store with the intent of doing multiple chapters, having the main characters go though many step heading to forever.

This is my first story and feedback is most welcome. Depending on the feedback, I will continue with more chapters. I have at least one more written now that I am proff'ing.

===============================

Edward sat in the parking lot of the small independent general store checking his work emails before heading inside to pick up the two weeks worth of supplies that he would need. His last stop before making the final leg to his cottage, unfortunately he couldn't concentrate on his cell phone. The large yellow envelope sitting on the passenger seat of his truck kept drawing his eye and causing Edward to loose focus, he just turned the fucking thing off and signed in frustration. Reaching into the back seat for his warm jacket, rubbing his arm where his one and only tattoo was, saying to himself, "Well I guess it's time to burn it down and start over, again". The dark clouds, starting to circle over his head as they have for almost the last 2 years.

Looking out of the front window at the store trying to get his mood to improve and find the motivation to get out into the cold and do the shopping. He found no joy, even in the thought of going to his cottage. Edward loved going there, it's the most peaceful place that he had and looked forward to going there as often as he could. This being their annual get away from the world that they did every year, he frowned with that thought, it's not WE anymore it's just me now.

Edward was getting more and more grumpy about his life, where it has gone, where it is going, and not liking anything about any of it. Steadying himself, he thought, might as well get cold, get the shopping done, get back on the road as it looks like it is going to snow and I rather not get caught in any storms that pop up without warning in this area. Turning off the truck, grabbing his wool hat and jumping out of the truck to get it over with. The frigid wind hit Edward the second he gets out, he realizing it had gotten much colder than when he started the trip. Walking in the front door someone bumped into Edward rather hard, not saying anything just rushing past. Within that second of an interaction the only thing that came to his mind was, "god they stink", he continued in the store forgetting it right away.

After grabbing a cart and spending almost 30 minutes picking up bread, fresh fruit, veggies, some meat, and a few other things that Edward would need or want for the next two weeks as he didn't want to come back to the world for at least that. Paying he started to head back out to the truck, pushing the cart as there was too much to carry in one go. Stepping out the front door of the store, that same stinky person came walking back in, all bundled up in old ratty clothes, and again that smell hit him. Getting to the truck Edward started it up to get it warm while he loaded everything into the back seat. As he climbed up into the truck, something at the front of the store caught his eye. The same person wearing the ratty clothes came back out in a hurry with a store employee following them out yelling something to them that didn't look nice.

He checked his phone one last time before getting back on the road, as once Edward got to the cottage there was no cell service. Looking up, he saw the ratty person again, however this time crouched down in a small bundle close to the front door just far enough away that no one in the store could see them. Unsure why but they seem to hold his interest more than his emails. Edward though that being in his truck he could stare a little without being. They were small, very small almost the size of a young teen, this immediately concerned him. They were wearing a light fall style jacket, nowhere as warm as they needed for the weather that felt like was coming. On their head was a oversized wool hat that was so thread worn that he could almost make out the hair underneath. Their pants in no better shape than the rest of the clothes, thread barren with what looked like some wear holes. Just then they stood up and looked around and then hurried back inside. Thinking this was odd, why were they coming in and out over and over again.

He was about to put the truck in drive and finish the trip to the cottage to forget about the world and everything that has happened to him. However just before he did, out came the ratty person once again and again an employee behind them clearly yelling at them. Edward's curiosity got the better of him and worried that there might be something wrong with "Ratty" (yes it's was a mean nickname) and felt the need to check on them. Waiting for the employee to go back inside he jumped down out of the truck leaving it running to stay warm as it's getting colder by the minute. Then slowly walked over, not wanting to scare Ratty as they were squatting down almost behind the bushes, he realized for shelter from the wind that was picking up.

He asked "Hello, are you alright, is there something that you need that I can help with?"

Their head just came up a little out of the jacket to meet his eyes and what came back not only startled him, surprised Edward to no end. This little mousy voice almost screamed at him, "Back off Perv, I'm not Prostitute!"

His eyes widened, he could barely make it out but Ratty was a woman. Him being a nice guy, he thought that he should try again to make sure everything was alright, 'god I hate being a nice guy', he thought to himself.

"I didn't say that you were, I just wanted...." before he could even finish that sentence she cut him off.

"Back the fuck off or I will scream rape! I don't give hand jobs, suck dick or anything else that gets me close to you" she yelled locking eyes with him, with what looked like tears starting.

Those eyes caught Edwards attention within a half a second. They were the lightest blue eyes he had ever seen, almost being clear. As he looked at them they pierced him straight to his bones, he was almost instantly lost in them even though he could barely see them. He was lost in them so much that Edward didn't hear the police get out of the car that had pulled up behind him.

"Sir, is everything ok here?" came the voice of the police behind him.

Jumping at the sound of someone talking behind him, "ah what...Yes everything is fine" he said as he turned. Glancing back at Ratty, he saw her head come up out of the light fall jacket with dirt all over her face and now clearly tears slowly trickling down her cheeks. Those clear blue eyes locked on his with this almost pleading look, then glanced to the cops with their hands slowly going to the holster on their hips. Edward wasn'tΒ sure why things were going the way they were and yet again being the nice guy he wanted to try and de-escalate the situation that was starting to happen.

"Sorry officers, I didn't hear you pull up. I was just offering this nice lady a ride home as her car won't start." Edward said, taking a step back to be almost in front of Ratty, raising his hands as he tried to look a little more peaceful. They looked at Edward then looked around him at her, then back to him saying.

"We got a call from the independent that there was a shoplifter"

"Oh, I don't know anything about that, but while I was trying to get this nice ladies car going, I think that I saw someone heading around the back of the store with some bulk under their jacket. I didn't think anything about it at the time but HE did look a little shifty." He wasn't sure why he lied for her but for some reason Edward felt the need to protect her.

They again looked at him, Edward could tell they really didn't believed him but they didn't have reason to think that he was lying.Β They looked again at her, judging her in about two seconds. However after a quick look between the two of them, they thanked him and started walking around the side of the building. Waiting about 30 seconds at most, Edward looked at her.

"Unless you want to be questioned by those trigger happy cops, I think it's best for you to get out of here before they check with the store if it was a girl or guy that was shoplifting." He said to her, with a slight smile on my face trying to keep her calm.

"Fuck you, I'm not a crook! Now I guess you want me to fuck you to pay for the help with the cops?!" She spat at him once again as she stood up clutching her sides.

Edward was getting annoyed with her but again was going to try to state that he haven't said anything about her being the shoplifter or about sex, but just then the wind blew hard and cold.

"You know what, Fuck this, and fuck you! You want deal with those ass holes it's no skin off my back, I don't need this shit. As usual I was trying to be a nice guy and got kicked in the balls for it." Edward almost yelled at her.

With that he turned and stormed away back to his truck, pissed at himself with trying to be a hero and getting yelled at for his trouble. She watched him leave, a little surprised that he left her alone so easily, and that he looked a little hurt at her outburst. But she it wasn't the first time that a man has tried to help her, and demanded sex for payment. She watched him get back into his fancy truck and just sit there.

Edward sat there in his truck trying to calm down before he drove off as the weather was slowly turning as it started snowing. As he sat there he was getting madder and madder that he started to talk to himself trying to calm down.

"Be nice to a girl and they yell at you."

"Be nice to a girl and they accuse you of soliciting for sex!"

"Be nice to a girl and they fuck your best friend!!"

"BE...NICE...TO...A...GIRL...AND...THEY...DIVORCE...YOU!!!"

With that Edward punched the dash of the truck. 'Well I guess I have to sit here a little longer to calm some more' he thought to himself. Leaning back he closed his eyes taking several deep breaths trying to get his blood pressure back down. Sitting there, breathing in and out, in and out keeping his eyes closed he could feel himself relaxing just a little.

She crouched back down, in the bushes just as the blew again, not knowing what to do. She couldn't keep going inside all night for some heat, but she couldn't stay here, her clothes were not good enough for snow. Not the mention that those cops would be back soon, thinking that maybe the cops would arrest her. At least she would have a one night in a warm cell, though that didn't sound like a good plan either. As she tried to come up with something she looked up at the guy in the truck, just sitting there with his head back, he seemed like he wanted to help. She didn't think that she had other options with that, she got up and walked over to the drivers side window.

Edward had his eyes closed trying to calm himself when he heard the littlest knock on his driver's side window. He almost didn't hear it, opening his eyes the little knock came again. Looking out the window and down, there was Ratty with a tear stained face. Sighing, Edward putting the window down half way and was blasted in the face with icy cold wind and snow, 'dam I got to get on the road before this gets worse' he thought.

"WHAT DO YOU WANT?", he half yelled at her, just wanting to be done with this.

She just stood there not even reaching the bottom of the window of the truck. The truck is a large and tall but not ridiculous, she had to be quite short. She was just looking at him with those crystal clear blue tear filled eyes. With another sigh he tried to temper his voice and ask once more,"What do you want?"

"I have nowhere to go." she said barely above a whisper almost drowned out by the wind.

"What."

"I have nowhere to go", she said again louder and then lowered her head embarrassed.

"And what's that got to do with me?" Edward ask her before he even had given it a thought and regretted saying it right away.

"Sorry" was all she said, in a whisper that was lost in the wind and started to walk away.

'God I hated being a nice guy' he thought. With that he hit the power locks on the door and yelled out the window, "get in the passenger side and we might be able to figure this out."

She stopped, paused not moving, then turned around and walked around to the other side of the truck with her head looking at the ground. Edward waited a second and the door opened with her hat covered head only about a foot or so over the seat. With all the heat rushing out of the truck he reached over and held out his hand to help her in the truck. She looked at him again with those beautiful eyes but they had gone back to defiant like before. She almost jumped and climbed up into the truck, she must have used the side rails or something to get in closing the door behind her.

Then it hit him, Edward had almost forgotten, the smell! It wasn't B.O. smell but it was old dirty clothes that had been worn too long and haven't been washed in way too long. They sat there for a short time but it felt way longer, her looking at the floor not knowing what this was going to cost her. Him half looking out the window half looking at her out of the corner of his eye trying to figure out what now. He didn't know what to say or do, as he didn't have a plan. Here he was with a stranger that had nothing but hate towards him and his good idea was to invite her into his truck. Edward turned towards her to try and say anything to her but stopped as she had started shivering at some point. Now that she was out of the wind the cold finally started setting in and she couldn't help but shiver. Edward sighed, and reach towards the heat controls for her side to turn them up, she jumped and all but plastered herself to the door thinking that here it comes. The touching, the payment.

"Sorry, I was just trying to turn the heat up and point the vents at you so that you can warm up" Edward said, surprised and a little confused with her reaction.

"Sorry," she said again in that mousy voice "I'm not really that cold" but she had never been this cold her entire life.

"Really, you seem to be shivering" He questioned her.

"I'm not, leave it" she said again with force that seemed to come from nowhere for no reason, but she didn't want to have sex for heat.

With that Edward's head was starting to hurt, thinking she was so confrontational with everything. Just at that moment her stomach let out the largest grumble he had heard in a long time and then so much of this clicked into place. Her clothes, the smell, her going in and out of the store, her getting kicked out of the store, and finally her saying that she didn't have anywhere to go..

"You're homeless aren't you?" he asked.

"Yes" she answered, her head dropping a little lower as she stared at the floor, not know how he would react to this info.

Sighing again, he wondered 'what I got myself into'. 'I could just ask her to get out of the truck and drive away'. 'I could just give her a few dollars and then ask her to get out and drive away'. 'I could get her some good warm clothes from the Independent, buy her a hot meal and part ways'... or, 'God I hate being a nice guy'.

He looked over at her, "When was the last time you had a hot meal, your clothes washed and a warm safe bed to sleep in?" is what came out of his mouth.

"I'm not going to sleep with you". Was her response, she turned, staring straight at him. Hoping that he wouldn't demand it.

Again his head thumped, looking straight at her, looking into those crystal blue eyes and getting lost, 'what was it with those eyes.' he though.

"This is the last time I am going to say this'' he started, but she began to lower her head down, "look at me!" EdwardΒ said a little more force than needed. She snapped up making eye contact again, with the littlest tremble, thinking he's going to yell at her, she didn't think that she could handle that, she don't want to cry more.

"I'm not trying to have sex with you, I'm not going to try and have sex with you. I'm not going to ask you to trade anything for anything that you might need." Closing his eyes once again to try and centre himself, "Again I will ask and for the last time... When was the last time you had a hot meal, your clothes washed, a hot bath and a warm safe bed to sleep in?"

Silence for just a moment "It's been months since I have had any of those things" she said with a defeated voice, looking down again, fighting the tears that threaten to fall.

"Well here is the offer, I have a cottage about 30 minutes up the road, which is where I was heading before I ran into you. You are more then welcome to go there with me, have a hot bath, wash your clothes, I will cook you a hot meal and you can sleep the night in a warm bed." all rolled out of his mouth before he could stop himself.

"In trade for what?" she said without looking up, knowing there is always a price.

"Nothing! As stated earlier. If that's not something you want then I can drop you off at a local shelter, I think there is one up the road somewhere."

As we sat there having this annoying conversation the wind was picking up more and the snow was falling a little harder. The weather was starting to turn a little nasty, "you have to make up your mind as the weather is getting worse and I have to get to where I am going before I can't get there." Edward stated in an almost cold tone, as he wanted it to go one way or the other.

She turned to look out the window and was shocked at the change in the weather. Looking back at him, then back out the window again "I guess I don't have a choice in the matter, the shelter will be full by now because of the weather and I can't stay out in this." she sounded completely defeated.

"You always have a choice, but with the weather turning as bad as it is, I don't think you can go in and out of the Independent all night long to keep warm. They will figure out what you're doing and call the cops again" her head snapped back up looking at Edward in the eyes, he had figured out what her plan had been, which surprised her some.

"I will go to your home." she said once more in that mousy voice. A voice that he was starting to like hearing, and those eyes that was something I could get used to looking at. With that answer she lowered her head once more looking at the floor of the truck and let out the smallest of sighs.

It then dawned on Edward what he actually had done, he just invited a complete stranger, homeless stranger back to his cottage. He thought to himself with a worry, 'What the hell am I thinking, was I lonely enough that a cute voice, beautiful eyes, was enough for me to invite her home. There is nothing good that could come from this, but I said it so I am now honour bound to do it.' he sighed with a last thought of 'God I hate being a nice guy.'

"Is there anything you need from the independent before we leave, as I won't be coming back this way until at least tomorrow?" Edward asked friendly as he was getting ready to leave.

"With what money, no of course I don't need anything!" she snapped.

"FINE," he said with a little grit to it "buckle up and let's get going."

Once she had her seat belt on, Edward put the truck in reverse, backed out of the parking spot and drove out onto the road and headed up the south mountain towards his cottage. He has made this trip so many times that he knew the road like the back of my hand and could take it faster than most, but not tonight. The snow was blowing around hard, it was getting a little harder to see, nothing was sticking to the road but soon it will. As we drove along Edward kept glancing over at Ratty, she was just sitting there looking at the floor mat almost broken. The silence was starting to get to him, and he needed something to break it. Then it dawned on him, the 30 minutes in the parking lot, 10 minutes in the truck driving he hadn't even asked her what her name was, he couldn't keep thinking of her as Ratty.
