Not hearing from Bel caused Zack to get rather anxious. She didn't come over. And when they had a movie night she barely even looked at him.
But the next day, when she was unexpectedly just sitting in his couch. She gave him the answer he was desperate for.
Did he fuck up?
She hasn't been around since. Tracey's been out more this week and there's no way to tell if it's been with Belinda or Mona.
Every night this week coming home had been a punch to the gut not seeing Bel's car out on the street. How is he supposed to get an answer from her if she's not here?
...Not being here is an answer.
Zack stayed in the car, watching the roller door go down in the rear view mirror. With the working week finished, he had nothing else to distract from his guilt of upsetting her.
"It was a nice half hour." He sighed.
The garage door burst open with Tracey already around his door side. "Dad, did you get my message?!"
Zack opened the car door to hear him clearer. "What?"
"I sent you a message and tried to call!" Tracey seemed in a rush. Zack looked at his phone. Yeah, missed call and a message. "I was asking if you could pick up some snacks and drinks on your way home from work."
"I absolutely would not have done that." Zack said to himself.
"I was doing uni homework and got carried away. Mona and Bel are coming over for a movie night and asked if I could grab snacks."
"Bel's coming over?" The good news perked Zack right up. "What did you need?"
He couldn't linger in on the movie with them. He would never do that normally. But how was he supposed to get Bel alone?
His heart had been racing since Tracey said she was coming. He definitely went a little overboard with the snacks getting the more expensive kind that they don't get everyday. When he returned, they all gave their thanks and appreciation for it. Tracey put all the snacks in bowls and delivered them to the lounge room so they were ready for movie time. Mona was dishing up for everyone a plate of something she got take-away. Bel was helping and focusing on that.
"Just look at me, please."
"What was that video you said would be good while we watch dinner, Bel?" Tracey asked while snatching a plate.
"Oh, yeah. Let me get it on the T.V." She dipped away with a plate of food.
"Here's yours." Mona passed a full plate for Zack with a smile.
His eyes followed Bel's retreat. That's all the interaction he'll get from her tonight it seems. "Thanks." He told Mona before letting it get too rude.
He sat himself at the table. Listening to them laugh at the dinner entertainment and then loudly pick which movie. That table had never felt more isolating.
"I thought you had plans with Mona today." Bel questioned before putting a large chip in her mouth and crunching.
Tracey scrunched up his face. "She got angry with me this morning. Can you help? Sorry, I wanted to just call you over so I could stop thinking about it and we could hang. Sometimes she has a little tiff every now and then and she just needs some time to calm down. But can I get your input?"
She ate another chip. "What happened?"
"Okay, well... we're having sex."
"Of course."
"It wasn't during it, well, it stopped it."
"Too fast, were ya? Crunch."
"No! We've not been together long, so we're using condoms."
"Awe, good boy."
"Yes. Anyway, this morning she goes to grab one and then she's all angry at me 'cause there was a single one."
Belinda freezes mid insertion of another chip.
"And she says she grabbed the last single one last time, so why is there another? Why are you laughing?"
As it turned out, her poker face was not winning her anything tonight. "I'm sorry." She laughed out. "So what, she's angry at you 'cause there was a loose condom in your room? Gross dude, clean up after yourself."
"No, she's angry because they come stuck together in threes and she reckons she used a single one last time; and finding another single one she says means I used two others without her."
"Did you?"
"No!"
"Well, I dunno, mate. Crunch. These things don't just walk away on their own. Maybe they fell out?"
"I've fricken looked in the drawer, they're not there!"
"Well, I don't know. Sorry, I think this is a 'You' problem."
"Ugh, thanks for nothin' then." His phone started ringing on the low table in front of them. He let his head fall back and groaned. "And now it is a problem. She's calling." He swiped it from the table and walked towards his room. "I'll be a while."
"Take all the time you need." Bel cackled as she continued eating the chips.
