This is a bit of a slow burn, but they do get there eventually.

Hope you all have a Happy Halloween!

No surprise, the house looked like it was done up for a movie. Which made sense, since my friend Jackie worked as a set decorator.

And of course, she decided to buy a big, beautiful old house in the shadows of Casa Loma. An honest to goodness castle, right in the heart of the city.

Glancing around as I made my way up the front staircase, I thought it was such a gorgeous old place.

The big, fat orange pumpkins lining the steps, and huge fall floral arrangements in two big black cauldrons flanking the double front doors, with spot lights lighting it all up, looked stunning, if a little eerie.

Luckily, instead of a traditional lock, it had a keypad. Which meant I didn't need to put all my things down to find a key to get in, I just had to punch in the number she'd texted me.

When I'd told my old college friend Jackie that I'd be in Toronto for a few weeks, she insisted that I stay at her place, since she was off working in London and said the house would be empty for at least a month.

I'd just stepped inside, and set my two suitcases down in the foyer and looked around, amazed at what a stately old house it really was.

The wide Scarlett O'Hara staircase seemed to go on forever. And the coffered ceilings had to be at least twelve feet high. Of course, everything was done up for Halloween, since Jackie loved to celebrate every season. Even the wall sconces were decorated with big ghastly looking spiders with glowing eyes, spinning webs.

Which had me wondering what she'd do when Christmas rolled around, imagining the place would look incredible filled with beautifully decorated trees, festooned with ribbons and garlands and lots of lights.

About to head upstairs, I took a glance into the living room, and I froze.

My heart jumped into my throat, and I had to fight not to scream when I realized there was a naked man fast asleep on a pullout couch in the middle of the room.

He'd left the TV on, and had a fire burning in the big stone fireplace, so I could tell he was tall and lean, and fairly well hung too, judging by what was hanging across his thigh.

Of course, none of that mattered, since all I could think of was turning around and getting out, before he saw me.

I had no idea if he was a burglar who had broken in, and was squatting, or if he'd been hired to do some work on the place. I just knew I had to get out.

Scrambling to pick up my two suitcases, and juggling my big purse, I bashed into one the posts on the staircase so hard, I almost fell. Which had him, lifting his head, blinking his eyes and staring at me in the hallway.

"Who are you?" he asked, sitting up and grabbing the sheet to cover himself.

"I'm uh... Lilah, Jackie's friend. And who are you?"

"I'm her brother Kal." He looked down at himself and chuckled. "Hang on, just let me get dressed."

When he stood and turned away to pull on his jeans, I had to stifle a groan when I got an eyeful of his nice tight ass and rippling back muscles.

Considering he was barefoot and only wearing a pair of well-worn low-slung jeans, that really showed off his nicely defined abs, his slightly furry bare chest, and the obvious bulge between his legs, I had a hard time keeping my eyes focused on his face, when he wandered into the hallway to shake hands.

"Sorry about that. I don't usually wear clothes unless I have to. But I had no idea anyone else was coming."

"Jackie offered to let me stay here while she's away."

He shook his head, chuckling. "She's sweet, but she can be a bit forgetful. She told me I could stay here, because the house would be empty."

"She told me the same thing."

He grabbed my two cases and nodded at the stairs. "Guess I'd better show you up to your room, then."

"Kal, are you sure you don't mind me staying? I'd be fine with going to a hotel, so you could have the house to yourself."

"This place is so big, there's plenty of room for two."

He was right about that. As we made our way up the long, wide staircase, I realized there had to be at least six good-sized bedrooms on the second floor alone. All of them beautifully decorated, most with big four poster beds.

"Jackie's room overlooks the garden out back, but this is a nice room, too," Kal said, showing me into a big, elaborately decorated bedroom, that looked like something out of a medieval castle.

"Wow!" was all I could say as I turned in a circle and took it all in.

"I know," he nodded. "My sister's got great taste, and she really gets into these themes."

The big canopied bed was so high, I noticed a footstool at the side, to make it easier to climb up.

"I feel like I've travelled back in time, everything just looks so authentic."

"Well, there's a Victorian style bedroom across the hallway, if you'd rather sleep in there," he suggested.

"No, this is perfect."

I poked my head in the ensuite and laughed. "Even the bathroom looks ancient, all done in stone, except for the sink and toilet, that look pretty new."

He smiled, looking in behind me. "Like I said, she really gets into it."

"So, where is your room, Kal?"

He pointed his thumb over his shoulder. "I stashed my stuff in the room next door. But I've mostly been sleeping downstairs in the living room. I like having a fire going, and being able to watch something on TV, because it helps me fall asleep. And it's the only one in the house."

I just nodded, wondering what it would feel like to curl up in that big, tall four-poster bed with the red velvet canopy over my head. Especially if I was curled up with him.

Though I realized we'd just met, there was just something about him that put me at ease.

"Have you had dinner yet, Lilah?" Kal asked, breaking into my thoughts.

"No. I didn't want to get here too late, so I thought I'd order something once I'd unpacked."

"Well, I've got some rice in the rice cooker. And I make a pretty wicked rice bowl."

"Sounds good," I said, just as my stomach started to growl, making us both laugh.

"While you're getting settled in, I'll put everything together."

"Ooh, something smells good," I said, when I wandered into the kitchen, finding him the way I'd left him, looking super sexy -- with no shirt, and no shoes in just his jeans.

He grinned. "I hope it's me."

Though I knew he was teasing, I stepped in close, had a sniff, and nodded. "Yep. You do smell pretty good. But I think it's the rice bowls."

Chuckling, he handed me some chopsticks and a cold beer, and nodded at the living room. "I was just going to watch,

Shaun of the Dead

, if you want to join me."

"Sure. I've heard it's pretty good."

He looked at me like I'd said something crazy. "You mean you've never seen it? Are you serious?"

I winced. "I don't usually watch anything scary."

"Well, you'll like this then, because it's way more funny than scary."

I took his word for it, and followed him into the living room.

"Wow! This is really good," I said, gesturing at my bowl, brimming with perfectly sauced veggies and plump juicy shrimp, on a bed of hot, fluffy rice. "I'll have to get the recipe."

He shrugged. "I don't write anything down. I just make stuff up out of my head. I bought some shrimps and veggies this morning, and I decided to toss this together for dinner."

I was sitting on a chair beside the bed, and I thought he looked pretty comfy, half-reclining with his back against the couch, as the movie started.

He must have read my mind, because he patted the space beside him. "You should check out this bed, Lilah. I'll bet its way more comfortable than sitting in that straight back chair."

I put down my bowl on the side table, kicked off my shoes and joined him on the bed, deciding I could trust him.

Though we'd just met, he already had me feeling right at home.

I kind of laughed to myself, thinking about my last boyfriend, Nigel, and what he'd think of me basically crawling into bed with someone I'd just met.

Nigel was so rigid and proper I knew he'd never dream of doing anything like eating a rice bowl for dinner. Especially half-reclined on a couch, with hardly any clothes on, while watching a movie.

He never even liked me making popcorn, in case I accidently dropped a few kernels and made a mess.

Kal was fun, though. I could already tell he was a free spirit, that seemed to be pretty happy with his life.

Whereas Nigel, never allowed himself to let loose enough to ever really enjoy himself. Which I always thought was a little sad, and one of the reasons we broke up. He always had me on edge, like he was judging everything I did, and eventually I decided I'd had enough.

Kal was right about the movie, too. It was so funny we laughed all the way through. A few scenes were so hilarious, we laughed till we were almost crying. When we looked at each other, we laughed even harder, when we noticed we were both wiping at our eyes.

Once we'd finished eating, Kal took our bowls to the kitchen and came back with two dishes of banana ice cream, that he said he'd made last night.

"So, I'm guessing you cook for a living?" I said, while savoring a spoonful of the super tasty concoction.

"No. I just enjoy messing around in the kitchen. And I like finding fun ways to eat things."

"I can see why. Everything was really good. And this ice cream is fantastic."

He just shrugged and pulled the blanket up over our legs, because there was a bit of a draft in the air.

I'd just finished the last spoonful of ice cream, and I started yawning. It had been a long day since I'd left Vancouver, and my eyelids kept wanting to close.

I looked out at the foyer, thinking I'd better make my way upstairs and get to bed. But it just felt so comfy on the couch, I decided to close my eyes for a minute and let them rest. And before I knew it, I'd dozed off.

When I finally opened my eyes, the sun was shining through the colorful stained-glass windows adorning the top of each big, tall window facing the street, sending shimmery little rainbows across the room.

But even more surprising than the little rainbows lighting up the room, was the that fact that I'd somehow curled up with Kal, who was still fast asleep with his arm loosely draped around me.

Afraid to wake him, I carefully tried to slip out from under his arm and move back to the other side of the bed. But I had to stifle a laugh, when he just hugged me a little closer.

Normally, I had trouble falling asleep. But I felt so relaxed with him, within a few seconds I'd dropped off again.

When I finally woke up, I was disappointed that Kal's side of the bed was empty.

But when I listened, I smiled when I heard him rattling around in the kitchen, and I was really glad that I could smell coffee brewing.

As I stretched myself awake, I realized I'd done the right thing when I'd decided to stay and share the house with Jackie's brother, rather than go to a hotel. I knew I wouldn't have had nearly as much fun, if I'd spent the night on my own. Especially considering the laughs I'd shared with him.

I decided I'd better run upstairs and brush my teeth, so my breath would be fresh when I went to join Kal in the kitchen.

He handed me a mug of steaming hot coffee and flashed me an appreciative smile, as he looked me over in my tiny pink crop top and jeans.

Gesturing at the pan on the stove, he said, "I'm making scrambled eggs with sautéed mushrooms and cheddar cheese, if that's okay with you."

"That sounds really good. What can I do to help?"

"You can grab the toast when it's ready. The eggs are almost done."

When the toast popped up, I smeared on some butter and grabbed the strawberry jam off the counter.

Once we were sitting at the kitchen table, Kal grinned and asked, "So, how did you sleep last night?"

I flinched, feeling a little guilty. "Sorry. I had planned to sleep upstairs, but I nodded off so fast I never made it off the couch."

He just shrugged and dug into his eggs. I was glad from the way he was grinning that he didn't seem to mind that I'd shared his bed, and even wormed my way over to his side during the night.

"I'm having a few friends over for a Halloween party tonight, if you want to join us," he said, as he reached for his coffee.

I wasn't sure what he was into, but I thought I should be honest. "I don't really drink much, and I don't do drugs."

He shrugged. "Neither do I. And I think you'll like my friends, they're a lot of fun."

"So, is this going to be a costume party?" I asked, relieved that we got that out of the way.

"Of course. You've gotta dress up for Halloween."

"But I don't have a costume."

He grinned, pointing up at the ceiling. "Well, you're in luck. Once we've finished this, I'll take you up and show you all the costumes and vintage clothing my sister's got stashed upstairs."

"Boy, you weren't kidding," I said, once we got up to the top floor and wandered into a storage room lined with racks of costumes and all kinds of beautiful old clothes and accessories.

Kal smirked as he held up a pretty skimpy looking French maid's costume. "I bet this would fit you. And you'd look pretty cute in it, too."

Not sure I wanted to show that much skin, I showed him a big orange costume, hanging with the funnier ones. "Or, I could dress as a pumpkin."

Kal shook his head, and muttered something under his breath, that I couldn't quite make out.

Curious, I said, "What did you say?"

"I was thinking you've got such a great shape that anything would look good on you. So, I don't know why you'd want to dress like a giant pumpkin."

I laughed. "Okay, then, how about this?" I said, pulling a beautiful, low-cut, pale pink ballgown off the rack of more formal clothes, that looked like something Cinderella might wear.

He studied it for a moment and nodded. "I think you'd look great in that. Though I still think you'd look pretty sweet as a French maid," he said, playfully waggling his eyebrows.

"Okay, then, how about this for you?" I asked, trying to keep a straight face as I held out a cartoonish looking 'Fred Flintstone' getup, complete with a shaggy black wig, giant necktie tie and a club.

He laughed. "Sure, if you want to dress as a pumpkin, I'll wear that, and we'll both look like big orange blobs. But I think we'd better try on some of the nicer ones, before we decide."

I took an armload back to my room, and Kal followed me downstairs to his room, with his arms full.

He didn't know I'd grabbed the French maid costume, till I tried it on with my sexiest black heels, and stepped outside to let him see.

It was short and sexy and quite low-cut, but it was fun, too. And from the way his eyes popped, I got the feeling he liked the way it looked. "I was right. I think you've found your costume. That looks great on you, Lilah."

"You don't think I should try on something else, before I decide?"

He shrugged. "It's up to you, but that fits like it was custom made just for you."

A moment later, he stepped out in a very sexy caveman outfit, that was just a loin cloth that dipped down just enough to cover his deal, with arm bands and a big, wild looking black wig. Since he was fair-haired like his sister, the black wig made him look like a whole other person. And I kind of liked him as a blonde with his sexy steel blue eyes.

"Wow," was all I could think of to say. "That's some costume."

He chuckled, looking down at himself. "Yeah, but I think I might be showing a little too much skin, so I think I'd better try on the cowboy outfit."

Letting my eyes roam over his body, I was tempted to say,

"I think you should wear it - at least around the house."

but I managed to hold my tongue. Though I thought he looked smokin' hot in just a loin cloth.

Though I had to admit, he looked almost as hot dressed as a cowboy: with a Stetson hat, vest and sleeveless shirt, and a holster around his waist. But he was such a good-looking guy, I had a feeling he'd still look hot in a potato sack.

"I was thinking you should try on that ball gown and see how it looks," he said, giving me a slow once over.

"Why, you don't like this?" I said, trying to keep a straight face, as I looked down at myself in the little maid costume. It was so short, and so low-cut, I probably looked like nothing but legs, and boobs, from the way my twins were spilling out over the top.

"Oh, I like it. I like it a lot. But since we'll be having a house full of people tonight, it might be better if you covered up a little more, so no one gets the wrong idea."

"I know. I just put this on for fun, and I wasn't planning on wearing it. Hang on, and I'll put on the ballgown, and see what you think of that."

When I came out of the bathroom in the ballgown with my hair up, his eyes went wide and he slowly began to smile.

I did a little pirouette and asked, "So, what do think?"

He shook his head. "I think you'd look gorgeous no matter what you were wearing. But you really look beautiful in that gown, like a real live princess."

I blushed. "Then I guess we've found our costumes."

For the next few hours, Kal and I worked together in the kitchen, getting all the food ready for the party. He was so easy to work with, it felt like we'd been doing it forever. And thankfully, he had lots of stuff already prepared in the fridge, so we mostly just had to put it out on serving platters and add some garnish.

He glanced over at the big brass antique clock hanging on the wall, and when he saw it was after six, he nodded towards the hallway. "Why don't you get ready, and I'll finish the rest?"

After I'd washed the knives and things I was using, and put them away, Kal leaned in and pressed a kiss to my cheek and said, "Hey, you've done enough. Now go and get a shower and get dressed in that ball gown."

"Okay, okay, I'll go," I said, laughing when he gave me a playful swat with a dish towel, and pointed upstairs, when I kept trying to tidy up and put things away.

Once I'd had my shower, got into my costume, put my hair up, and slipped into my shoes, I took one last look at myself. And I thought if my hair was white, instead of reddish blonde, I could pass as Marie-Antoinette, with the bit of makeup I was wearing.

"Whoa!" Kal said, his eyes popping as soon I stepped out of the bedroom. "Somebody looks gorgeous."

I laughed. "I hope it's me. And I'm just glad your sister had all this stuff to pick from, so we didn't have to go out looking for something to wear." I winked, looking him over in his western getup. "And you look pretty good, too, cowboy."

He offered me his arm and walked me down the staircase, just as the doorbell was ringing.

"I left candy outside for the trick or treaters, so that's got to be Dave. He always shows up early."

Dave was really tall, and I thought he made a very handsome Dracula.

Once Kal handed him a beer, Dave grinned at me and said, "So, you gonna introduce me to your girlfriend, Kal?"

I thought Kal would explain who I was, but he just smiled at me and made the introductions. "Lilah, this is Dave, who works with me sometimes. And Dave, this is Lilah."

Dave just nodded, looking us over, but didn't ask any questions.

After that, people just kept coming, dressed in all kinds of costumes. And there so many of them, I lost track of all their names.

Though I noticed one guy dressed as a knight with a long silver cape, kept buzzing around me. When I went in the kitchen for a drink, he was right behind me, making me a little nervous.
