This is a bit of a slow burn, but they do get there eventually.
Hope you all have a Happy Halloween!
No surprise, the house looked like it was done up for a movie. Which made sense, since my friend Jackie worked as a set decorator.
And of course, she decided to buy a big, beautiful old house in the shadows of Casa Loma. An honest to goodness castle, right in the heart of the city.
Glancing around as I made my way up the front staircase, I thought it was such a gorgeous old place.
The big, fat orange pumpkins lining the steps, and huge fall floral arrangements in two big black cauldrons flanking the double front doors, with spot lights lighting it all up, looked stunning, if a little eerie.
Luckily, instead of a traditional lock, it had a keypad. Which meant I didn't need to put all my things down to find a key to get in, I just had to punch in the number she'd texted me.
When I'd told my old college friend Jackie that I'd be in Toronto for a few weeks, she insisted that I stay at her place, since she was off working in London and said the house would be empty for at least a month.
I'd just stepped inside, and set my two suitcases down in the foyer and looked around, amazed at what a stately old house it really was.
The wide Scarlett O'Hara staircase seemed to go on forever. And the coffered ceilings had to be at least twelve feet high. Of course, everything was done up for Halloween, since Jackie loved to celebrate every season. Even the wall sconces were decorated with big ghastly looking spiders with glowing eyes, spinning webs.
Which had me wondering what she'd do when Christmas rolled around, imagining the place would look incredible filled with beautifully decorated trees, festooned with ribbons and garlands and lots of lights.
About to head upstairs, I took a glance into the living room, and I froze.
My heart jumped into my throat, and I had to fight not to scream when I realized there was a naked man fast asleep on a pullout couch in the middle of the room.
He'd left the TV on, and had a fire burning in the big stone fireplace, so I could tell he was tall and lean, and fairly well hung too, judging by what was hanging across his thigh.
Of course, none of that mattered, since all I could think of was turning around and getting out, before he saw me.
I had no idea if he was a burglar who had broken in, and was squatting, or if he'd been hired to do some work on the place. I just knew I had to get out.
Scrambling to pick up my two suitcases, and juggling my big purse, I bashed into one the posts on the staircase so hard, I almost fell. Which had him, lifting his head, blinking his eyes and staring at me in the hallway.
"Who are you?" he asked, sitting up and grabbing the sheet to cover himself.
"I'm uh... Lilah, Jackie's friend. And who are you?"
"I'm her brother Kal." He looked down at himself and chuckled. "Hang on, just let me get dressed."
When he stood and turned away to pull on his jeans, I had to stifle a groan when I got an eyeful of his nice tight ass and rippling back muscles.
Considering he was barefoot and only wearing a pair of well-worn low-slung jeans, that really showed off his nicely defined abs, his slightly furry bare chest, and the obvious bulge between his legs, I had a hard time keeping my eyes focused on his face, when he wandered into the hallway to shake hands.
"Sorry about that. I don't usually wear clothes unless I have to. But I had no idea anyone else was coming."
"Jackie offered to let me stay here while she's away."
He shook his head, chuckling. "She's sweet, but she can be a bit forgetful. She told me I could stay here, because the house would be empty."
"She told me the same thing."
He grabbed my two cases and nodded at the stairs. "Guess I'd better show you up to your room, then."
"Kal, are you sure you don't mind me staying? I'd be fine with going to a hotel, so you could have the house to yourself."
"This place is so big, there's plenty of room for two."
He was right about that. As we made our way up the long, wide staircase, I realized there had to be at least six good-sized bedrooms on the second floor alone. All of them beautifully decorated, most with big four poster beds.
"Jackie's room overlooks the garden out back, but this is a nice room, too," Kal said, showing me into a big, elaborately decorated bedroom, that looked like something out of a medieval castle.
"Wow!" was all I could say as I turned in a circle and took it all in.
"I know," he nodded. "My sister's got great taste, and she really gets into these themes."
The big canopied bed was so high, I noticed a footstool at the side, to make it easier to climb up.
"I feel like I've travelled back in time, everything just looks so authentic."
"Well, there's a Victorian style bedroom across the hallway, if you'd rather sleep in there," he suggested.
"No, this is perfect."
I poked my head in the ensuite and laughed. "Even the bathroom looks ancient, all done in stone, except for the sink and toilet, that look pretty new."
He smiled, looking in behind me. "Like I said, she really gets into it."
"So, where is your room, Kal?"
He pointed his thumb over his shoulder. "I stashed my stuff in the room next door. But I've mostly been sleeping downstairs in the living room. I like having a fire going, and being able to watch something on TV, because it helps me fall asleep. And it's the only one in the house."
I just nodded, wondering what it would feel like to curl up in that big, tall four-poster bed with the red velvet canopy over my head. Especially if I was curled up with him.
Though I realized we'd just met, there was just something about him that put me at ease.
"Have you had dinner yet, Lilah?" Kal asked, breaking into my thoughts.
"No. I didn't want to get here too late, so I thought I'd order something once I'd unpacked."
