Three months passed and Linda had not fully recovered from the effects of our last encounter with Karl Ziegler and his wife. She was terribly disappointed, by them. She thinks of them with contempt and distain and can't seem to get over it.
We had only been to the club once in the last three months and nothing had come of it. We did find a couple that I found interesting to talk to, but Linda couldn't get into the conversation. We ended the evening by leaving alone. We had previously booked a motel room as we always do, so we spent the night there. We made love but even that was not special. Linda couldn't find a way out of her doldrums.
The following Monday, I called Kay from work. I briefly explained Linda's state of mind to her.
Kay said, "I will call her and make a lunch date with her if you want me to, Luke. We could talk but I think I know how to handle the problem. You need to find a way to give her a good experience. Take her on a cruise or something similar. Share a good time with her and keep her too busy to be depressed."
I asked, "Do you really think it is that simple? It has been over three months. I am worried. I wish you would talk to her."
Kay said, "Okay I'll call her."
Linda told me that evening, that Kay had called and they had set a lunch date for Friday. Kay called me in the afternoon, after their date.
I asked her. "Do you see the problem?"
Kay answered, "It's not as serious as you think. She will snap out of this on her own in time. I think she might be arguing with herself, trying to decide whether swinging is still a good idea or not. Several items are on her bucket list that she still wants to happen. She is trying to figure out whether further pursuit of them is worth the effort or not."
Kay paused then continued, "She enjoyed the time spent with Barb and was disappointed when Barb became no longer available. She very much enjoyed being with Karl until he turned into Mr. Hyde. She is not as deep in depression as you think. She is mainly just disappointed."
I then asked, "Do you still believe something like a vacation would help?"
She answered, "Absolutely, find a way for her to spend some time enjoying herself."
I said, "Thank you, Aunt Kay. I will play it your way. You haven't been wrong yet."
She replied, "You owe me another steak. I love you both." She said, "Bye-bye," and hung up.
I put my mind on autopilot to ponder this problem and made my way through the rest of my work that day. As I drove toward home that evening, it came to the front of my thoughts again.
When I walked into the house, Linda was wearing one of my shirts. She kissed me, handed me a drink and said, "Change into something comfortable and come sit with me." I went to our bedroom and she went to the den.
I thought, "Kay's visit did some good. Linda's mood has already improved."
As we cuddled together in my chair, she said, "This is a truth time." She was fingering her pendant.
I said, "Okay."
She then asked, "Do you want to continue swinging?"
I took a minute to form my thoughts and said, "I want to continue until it is completely out of your system and then I will want to quit. I don't want to quit and then have regret jump up and bite us." When I said the word, "regret," Bobby Wilkinson popped into my mind.
I then asked, "Did you and Kay have a good visit?"
She answered, "I think we did. She said she was going to call you. What did she say to you?"
I answered, "She relieved my anxiety some. I was afraid you were in a state of deep depression. She told me you were really just disappointed with the way things turned out with Karl and Connie. She told me to find a way to get you busy having a good time." I paused and then added. "I think she must have helped you too, or we wouldn't be sitting here like this."
I let my hand roam under my shirt, which she was wearing. She was naked. I thought, "This is more like old times. Happy days might be here again."
Linda replied, "She did help me. She told me pretty much the same thing. I have decided that I want you to set up a vacation for us. I want there to be plenty of opportunity for sex between us. If something extracurricular happens, that is Okay, but it isn't necessary. When we get back maybe I will know whether or not I want to continue chasing my bucket list."
I said, "Okay."
She snuggled close to me and we were silent for a few minutes. Finally, she said, "Kay told me one other thing."
I asked, "What?"
Linda replied, "She told me that I wasn't fucking you silly, nearly as often as I should. I pledged to her, I would remedy that." We had a nice quickie right then, on the den floor. It was full of emotion and high energy. Happy days are here again.
We laughed together and prepared our dinner. Having eaten, we shared some time on the patio and watched the sunset. Bedtime came early and we made sweet love for a long time. I thought, "Why hadn't I talked to Kay months ago?"
The next morning was Saturday. It was Linda's turn to work this morning. The women in her office take turns opening the office on Saturdays for walk-in business. Linda has to go in about one Saturday a month.
I cooked breakfast for us while she made herself ready for work. We ate at the island in the kitchen. She was running a little late so we hurried and had little conversation. She seemed in a good mood. She allowed me to hold her for a few seconds while she kissed me goodbye and she was gone.
I took coffee to the patio and sat watching the world around our small lake as it woke up. I thought about Bobby Wilkinson. He had been my son's soccer coach about ten years earlier. He was a very handsome man and Linda had felt a strong attraction to him. She wanted an affair but it never happened because that was before our swinging days and Linda couldn't cheat. She told me of her feelings for him sometime later and said she felt great regret for not having asked me to let her be with him. She said that she had wanted to but had chickened out. He is an honorable man and walked away because she was married.
Kay had told me once that if I could let them be together it would satisfy a powerful need in Linda. It might be a way to bring her, "Middle Age Crazy," to an end. I had my head of security vet Bobby and I had an up to date file on him. I knew where he was. I also knew he would take her mind off Karl.
Linda made it home about three. I asked her to walk around the lake with me. She changed clothes and we set off. She seemed bubbly, like a child the last few days before Christmas.
She asked, "Have you thought about a vacation for us?"
I answered, "Yes, I have. I got in touch with Ali Gordon today." Ali is a travel agent that we have used before. I went on, "she gave me three options that are available beginning Monday a week from now."
Linda said, "Tell me."
I answered, "Ali is sending brochures in the mail but I think I remember enough of what we talked about. Number one is a Caribbean cruise that lasts seven days. It's pretty much the same as the cruise we took three years ago. It was my last choice. Oh, we would have to fly to Florida on Sunday before the boat leaves."
Linda said, "Okay, What's next?"
I answered, "A cruise to Alaska. We haven't done that before. The boat leaves Seattle Monday week, so again we would have to fly the Sunday before. If we come back to Seattle on the boat, this trip last twelve days. If we fly back from Alaska to Dallas, it's only seven days. It also has an Alaska train ride included that last a full day and night."
"What is number three," she asked?
I said, "We can spend one or two weeks in an isolated mountain cabin in Colorado."
We came to the bench on the trail that is farthest from the house. We sat and Linda said, "Luke, I'm tired of boats. Karl had us on a boat. I think a week in Colorado would be easiest and the most fun. We could hike and fish all day and do wonderfully nasty things to each other at night." She giggled.
I laughed with her and said, "I have one other suggestion. I thought this one up all by myself but Ali will still have to make the arrangements. She will still get her commission." I handed Linda a blue card.
Linda looked at it and asked, "What is this?"
I said, "That, my young and vibrant wife is the phone number for Bobby Wilkinson."
She was grasping the card tightly in her right hand. Her eyes became misty and a single tear rolled down her face. Her left hand went to the necklace around her neck. It was the one that I had given her that says I love her.
She kissed my lips softly and said, "Go home, Luke. Leave me here. I need some time to think about this. I won't be long."
I kissed her forehead and said, "Okay."
As I walked away, I heard her say, "I love you." I blew her a kiss and went to the house.
I made myself a stiff drink and sat on the patio. I couldn't see the bench where I had left her from this vantage point but I watched the trail. An hour later, she appeared about a quarter of a mile away walking slowly. I'm sure she was in deep thought. I freshened my drink and poured a glass of wine for her.
She arrived at the patio and picked up her wine from the table. She downed a healthy portion of it. She tugged me up from my chair and kissed my lips. She said, "I'll be back in a few minutes."
Linda went to the kitchen and prepared sandwiches for us. She put them on a tray with some chips and a dip. She came back to the patio and said, "This is dinner. I want to go to bed early. I need a truth time and I want you to hold me. She returned to the kitchen and came back with a pitcher of iced tea.
We had our dinner. When she was finished, she asked, "Would you like another drink?"
I said, "No I've had enough." I thought, "I should probably keep my wits about me."
