The Three and The One

Chapter 1

Cassidy Hart couldn't quite believe what she just heard. "Uh, sorry, I don't think I heard you right." She put her solo cup of watered-down lemonade on the table and glanced quickly around the sunny picnic area to see if there was anyone waiting to laugh at her gullible reaction. Maybe someone was going to pop out with a camera and scream "Punk'd!". But, besides her, the only person within earshot was her best friend, Kelly McDaniel, sitting on the far side of the pavilion. They'd decided to sit apart from the rest of the congregation and talk while everyone else enjoyed the Summer Cookout.

"Hm?" Kelly looked at her over the lip of her cup, the ice clattering as she sucked a piece into her plump lips and started chewing. Her deep brown eyes sparkled and held a hint of amusement as she asked, "What part of the question was confusing?"

"You... did you just seriously ask me to..." Cassidy didn't wanna say it. It felt wrong even thinking something like that. She was shocked Kelly would even joke about something that... dirty. Kelly was usually very open and outspoken, but she wasn't prone to perverted humor. At least, not that Cassidy had ever seen or heard.

Kelly cupped her chin in her hand, elbow leaning on the old peeling table. "To have a threesome with me and Jack? Yeah. I did." She grinned sweetly with just a hint of mischief as her dark-rimmed glasses slipped down the bridge of her nose. The darkness of her coffee-tinted brown eyes was intense as she met Cassidy's own bright blue.

Cassidy sat up straighter and again her eyes darted all around, making sure no one was close enough to hear a happily married mother of two uttering something so bold and obscene. She looked towards the open field across from the pavilion where several games were going on; corn hole, horseshoes, and a game of flag football with the kids against the adults. She wasn't even sure what she was looking for until her eyes found him. Kelly's husband, Jack, was running full tilt across the grass with a gaggle of kids, chasing and screaming like the feral children from Lord of the Flies. He was all smiles, face red and glistening, dark gray hoodie stained with sweat.

Watching the man run, his thighs strong and muscular in his athletic shorts, it was hard not to be impressed by him. A sweet man. Nothing but a giving and solid friend. Never once had he hit on Cassidy, or anyone else for that matter. He only had eyes for Kelly. Her friend was a tall brunette, who had an elegance to her that seemed so natural and effortless that it was hard to imagine her ever being awkward or uncomfortable. Dark, wavy hair fell around her face, framing her strong cheekbones and sweet mouth that was frequently curved upward into a kind, but sly grin. Jack, in contrast, was quieter but still boisterous when the situation called for it. He was the kind of thoughtful friend who noticed when someone was quiet or withdrawn and pulled them into the conversation. Kelly was the social butterfly, able to fly anywhere and shine and be brilliant. Jack was the solid, warm foundation, lifting the mood and making sure everyone enjoyed themselves. They were a couple that everyone looked at with a smile, no exceptions.

This had to be a joke. Kelly and Jack were not the type to... well, Cassidy didn't really know what someone who wanted a threesome was like. Were they actually different from everyone else? Or were there people all around her that were secretly harboring these fantasies? Kelly suddenly felt like she was living an episode of The Twilight Zone. She brushed a strand of red-brown hair from her face that had come undone from the braid she'd tied her hair in that morning, feeling suddenly flushed and nervous.

Kelly crunched another ice cube. "Hey, I see you over there, overthinking things." She grinned and reached out, patting her friend's hand. "Don't be getting all twisted over this. If the answer is 'no' I completely understand. No hard feelings."

"I just..." Cassidy cleared her throat and took a quick drink of her lemonade, suddenly feeling like her mouth was a dessert. "Um, why... uh, why are you asking me? Like, Kelly, are you being serious?" Her cheeks were on fire and her stomach was clenching.

Kelly put her cup down, still resting her chin in her palm. "Yeah. Of course. I wouldn't joke about this. I mean, sex isn't all that special, but I'm not gonna joke around like that. I wouldn't ask you if I didn't take this seriously." Her smile was so disarming and calm.

How in the freaking world is she not... not freaking out like I am? Cassidy screamed in her head. Thankfully, she didn't scream it out for real. Instead, she heaved a slow breath and took hold of her cup because she needed to reassure herself that she was still in the real world and not some sort of dream. "Okay. So. Um. You're asking me to... to uh..."

Kelly was nodding slowly, watching Cassidy process. "Go on." She encouraged.

"To have, um, to have sex with Jack..."

"And me. It's a threesome." She held up three fingers, one of them glittering with her diamond wedding ring.

Cassidy's eyes darted back to the field where Jack was getting mobbed by the kids. He stuck his arms up into the air like he was drowning and cried out with a laugh as the kids swarmed and he vanished beneath them. Cassidy had never thought of Jack in terms of attraction. Of course he was good-looking, there was no denying that. But you just didn't think about your best friend's husband that way. Her brain classified Jack firmly as a friend, not as a sexual prospect. At least, not till now. Suddenly, Kelly's suggestion had blown open a gate in her mind, and she was noticing his muscles. Not overly toned, but they had clean lines. Sweat stuck his grey hoodie to his chest, showing how broad it was. His jaw was firm and square, with a little salt and pepper stubble on it. His grin was electric, and his backside wasn't bad, either.

She shook her head quickly and looked back to Kelly, who was eyeing her with a raised eyebrow and a sly grin, as if she knew Cassidy had been objectifying her husband.

"Did Jack...I mean... was this his idea?" Cassidy still couldn't wrap her head around what she was talking about with her best friend.

Kelly snorted and shook her head, sitting up and brushing her hair back, tying it in a low, messy ponytail. "Are you kidding me? No way. Jack can be pretty wild in bed, but he knows better than to suggest bringing another woman into the bedroom to his wife. I mean, besides a joke here and there. This is all me."

Now Cassidy was even more confused.

Kelly, seeing the stark incomprehension on her best friend's face, laughed warmly, then calmly explained, "So Jack's birthday is coming up in a couple weeks. I was racking my brain Cass, trying to figure out what to get him. The man's impossible to shop for. But then I had this great idea. We've kidded around about three ways and whatnot for years. You know, just meaningless dirty talk. So, I figured, why not for the big four zero, give him what every man fantasizes about, since it's clearly something that turns him on." She folded her arms under her ample chest, her dark t-shirt clinging enough that Cassidy could see an outline of her bra that looked dark purple if she went off the strap that was exposed along her shoulder.

"But... okay, I guess that sort of makes sense. But, why me?" Cassidy bit her lip.

Her friend looked at her with that sweet, slightly exasperated gaze that Cassidy had seen Kelly use a million times with her kids over the years when they were asking questions they should know the answers to. "Well, one, because you're my best friend and I trust you. I'm not just gonna go out and solicit some stranger or whatever. That's just... well, it's too complicated and you never know what you're gonna get‌. If we're gonna do it, we need to trust the third. Not only to respect our wishes, but also for privacy. I don't want someone running around talking about how she made it with the Preacher and his wife." Kelly rolled her eyes and took off her glasses, leaning forward with her elbows on the table, and gazed at Cassidy lovingly, her lips quirking up into a teasing smirk. "Second, I don't know if you noticed Cass, but you're hot."

Cassidy snorted and chuckled, despite her friend's fond smile. "Okay, well, nice way to flatter me, I guess."

"You're welcome," Kelly answered, with a warm chuckle.

"So it wasn't Jack that asked you to ask me?"

"Nope. But when I suggested you, he seemed pretty amicable. Even eager." She wiggled her eyebrows.

Cassidy blushed even deeper. "Uh... wow okay. So... so this is really serious."

Kelly nodded curtly.

"Kelly, I'm flattered that you trust me this much. And that you... a-and Jack thought of me for something this... personal. But Kelly. Be serious. You know I'm not gonna cheat on Collin." Cassidy looked to her friend, scared now that she understood how serious Kelly was.

Kelly's eyes widened. "What? Oh! Oh heavens no, sweety! I'd never, ever ask you to cheat on Collin. We aren't... I'm not talking about you going behind his back. No! I want you to discuss it with him. We don't wanna do this unless everyone is agreeable." She reached out and took Cassidy's hand. "Listen. I'm asking this as a favor for a friend. A little fun. Nothing more. You aren't some bucket list checkbox that Jack's trying to get or some sort of free pass. It's a fun gift. That's all. We trust you. But if you don't want to do it, then we won't pressure you. And if Collin isn't okay with it, then that's totally understandable, too."

Cassidy just nodded. Unsure what to say.

"Just think about it. Talk to Collin. Or not. If you say no, it's no harm, no foul. I promise. I'm not gonna be Mean Girl passive aggressive towards you or anything. I swear." Kelly grinned and squeezed her friend's hand.

"Hey Cass, you ready to go?" Collin came up behind Cassidy, putting his hands on her shoulders tenderly, massaging gently, and gave her cheek a kiss. He looked as happy and boyishly handsome as usual, his light brown hair swept to the side and his kind hazel eyes gleaming with love as he saw his wife. He felt like a sudden anchor reeling Cassidy back to the real world from whatever strange fantasyland Kelly had cast her into. She gratefully put her free hand over the one resting on her shoulder... feeling the ring on her finger acutely with the contact.

Kelly sat up, letting go of Cassidy's hand. "Just think about it." She repeated and got up. "See you later!" She waved to Cassidy and Collin and began walking across the field to see if she could save her husband from the over-enthusiastic children of the congregation.

Cassidy watched her friend leave. She couldn't help but notice how flattering Kelly's tight, dark jeans looked, clinging snugly to her retreating backside.

"Think about what?" Collin asked as Cassidy got up from the table, a curious smile on his face as he laced his fingers through Cassidy's. Her hand still felt like it was tingling from the contact with Kelly.

"Hm? Oh, nothing, just... just girl stuff." Cassidy replied, but she couldn't help looking back at Kelly, waving as she approached her tall, sweaty husband, her hips swaying temptingly in her dark jeans. Jack ran up, giving his wife a big hug, laughing and briefly reaching down to squeeze her behind.

The flush in Cassidy's cheeks warmed up as she wondered, for just a second, what her friend's ass felt like. Then she shook it off and went with her husband to their car.

...

"Ok, Cass," said Collin with a sneaky smile, peeking down into the bowl he had carried in from the car, "guess how much leftover potato salad we have from the 'huge amount we'll never be able to get rid of'?"

"Tell me," Cassidy smiled faintly, hanging the car keys and tucking a stray strand of hair behind her ear distractedly.

"None," said Collin with a faint note of smug triumph, tilting the bowl to show her the few remaining yellow smears. "Should have trusted your hubby, sweetheart. The Hart family potato salad recipe never loses." Collin loved cooking, especially for his wife. Cassidy told him it must be one of his love languages, and he had to admit that it was true. Could you blame him for wanting to make sure she ate well? One of his great joys in life was seeing his wife's eyes widen in delight as she ate the first bite of his latest dish. But she never did like potato salad.

Cassidy turned to him with a smile, catching a ray of sunshine just right and piercing right through Collin's heart. She was lovely. As lovely as the day they got married, and Collin ought to know, he would remember that day forever. A petite, slim beauty, with glowing rosy skin. A cute dusting of freckles. And startling blue eyes, clear as a summer day. She was perfect. She was his.

Normally, Cassidy would make a shy quip back at him about the people at the picnic having no taste or something. Collin loved that he was the only one Cassidy felt comfortable teasing... like it was a special privilege. But today, oddly, she just walked up to him and gave him a soft, fleeting kiss, murmuring, "That's wonderful, honey." The look in her eyes was far away. Distracted. Maybe even worried?

Collin frowned. Cass could be a little sensitive. And she wasn't always the best at speaking up for herself when she had a problem. He recognized that one of his jobs in the relationship was to help his wife, even when she didn't come right out and ask for it. Collin laced his fingers through Cassidy's fingers as she pulled away, gently tugging her back to him, cupping her face with his hand, and captured her eyes with his.

"Hey," he said calmly, "What's up?"

Sometimes that was all it took for her to open the floodgates and let him know what was the matter. This wasn't one of those times. Her deep blue eyes skated away from his again, but she didn't pull away. She bit her lip for a second, then said, hesitantly, "Honey, can I ask you a question that might be a little... weird?"

Colin cocked an eyebrow. Ok, this was heading in a bit of an unusual direction. But he was willing to bite. Anything, if it made Cassidy feel better. "Sure. You can ask me anything, babe."

Cassidy was silent for a long moment, concentrating on picking at the hem of her yellow sundress. Then, her eyes flashed upward briefly, and she softly asked one of the strangest questions Collin had ever heard come out of her mouth.

'Honey, have you ever... thought about being with two women at once?"

Collin just stared, blinking at his wife in shock for a few moments. To say the question was out of left field would be an understatement. Cass could be passionate. Sometimes just remembering her warm, adoring words and actions in their marital bed made Collin's blood run hot.

But kinky? Never. Cassidy didn't have a dirty bone in her body, and the only flavor she served was vanilla. Collin's mind whirled, trying to think of where this question could even have come from. The answer was obviously "yes". Collin considered himself a moral person, but he was a man, after all. What red-blooded guy hadn't at least entertained the idea?

However, Collin had been married long enough to know the difference between a true answer and a correct answer for this sort of hypothetical. "No," he said smoothly, "Not really. Just not something I think I would be into."

"Right," said Cassidy swiftly, raising his hand to her lips and giving it a peck before releasing it, "Of course. Sorry. It was a silly question." She began walking away, clearly still distracted by whatever she was thinking about.

Oh. Ohhhhhh. The real answer popped into Collin's head. Cassidy could overthink things sometimes. She must have seen him interacting with one of the other ladies in the church at the picnic and started worrying he was showing some sort of interest. Collin felt a little bad. Not that he had done anything wrong, but that he hadn't answered the question correctly.

Well... there was one sure way to fix the problem if Cassidy was worried about him getting interested in other women...

Collin strode after his wife before she could walk too far away, gripping her hips from behind and pulling her close. She gave a shocked little gasp, startled by the sudden physical contact, and when she turned to look over her shoulder, Collin gave her a kiss deeper and sweeter than the light, breezy kisses they had given each other this afternoon.

He pulled away, finally seeing with satisfaction that he held his wife's full attention. "How can I think about other women when I have you in my bed?" he murmured. "Why don't you come with me, love? I'll show you you're the only woman I need."

Cassidy blushed and smiled, whatever was distracting her, forgotten, at least for the moment. And she leaned in to Collin, kissing him back with a soft murmur. "I'd like that."

...

They shut the door to the bedroom, not that there was anyone else in the house that could hear or see anything they shouldn't. It was more symbolic, the idea that the bedroom was closed and private. What happened there, stayed there.

Cassidy turned to her husband, getting to her toes to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him. Lips pressed gently and lovingly, feeling the taste of him and his warm, comforting breath. There was still a knot twisting in her stomach from earlier, the conversation with Kelly still simmering in the back of her mind. Bouncing around and twisting as if it were a rubix's cube that was longing to be solved. Each twist in her mind about the idea made her kiss a little harder, her lips parting and sliding her tongue into Collin's mouth, grazing his teeth and tongue.

His hands moved along her waist, gripping her hips tightly and bunching up her dress as they kissed. Soon he moved his lips from hers to her neck. Along her collarbone. Whispering little soft words of love, praise, words that were just like a light breeze, there and gone again as they drifted over her skin.

Cassidy gripped Collin's hair, tangling her fingers and gripping tightly.

Her husband started pulling up her dress, forcing Cassidy to let go of his neck and lifting her arms up so he could get the dress off. He tossed it aside to the floor, leaving her in her satin, pale pink bikini panties and matching bra. Soft and plain but fitting tightly against her to accent her perky breasts and puffy mound.

The feeling of his eyes on her made her blush. He always did like looking at her. Appraising. Approving. Appreciating. He was a triple A kinda guy. She smiled wide and reached for his shirt, pulling it up and off him quickly, his flat stomach pale with a dusting of dark hair along the trail from his belly button up. Cassidy leaned in, hands on his hips and kissed his chest, little butterfly kisses along his pectorals and down to his stomach, where she started to undo his belt.

Collin felt his heart beating fast and strong in his chest as his wife's tender hands tugged and pulled at his pants. There was something a little different about her today... a sparkle in her eyes, an extra depth in the rosy blush staining her cheeks. He felt his cock respond as he sensed Cassidy's eagerness. As she undid his button, her other hand slipped over to gently rub the swiftly hardening bulge in his pants. Her plump lower lip caught between her teeth as she gazed at the evidence of his arousal.

Collin reached over to flick the light switch off, just as Cassidy usually preferred, but he felt a warm palm placed on his outstretched arm, stopping him. He looked down in surprise to see his wife looking up at him with soft, slightly embarrassed, upturned eyes. "No..." she breathed with a shy smile, "I don't mind today, honey. Let's leave them on." Collin could barely stop himself from grinning ear to ear. Cassidy really was in a funny mood today, but if it meant that she didn't mind him staring at her gorgeous body, he would take this mood any day. He let his hand fall as Cassidy eased his pants off of his hips, his stiff penis tenting out his boxers as it was freed from the confines of his pants.
