The Three and The One
Chapter 1
Cassidy Hart couldn't quite believe what she just heard. "Uh, sorry, I don't think I heard you right." She put her solo cup of watered-down lemonade on the table and glanced quickly around the sunny picnic area to see if there was anyone waiting to laugh at her gullible reaction. Maybe someone was going to pop out with a camera and scream "Punk'd!". But, besides her, the only person within earshot was her best friend, Kelly McDaniel, sitting on the far side of the pavilion. They'd decided to sit apart from the rest of the congregation and talk while everyone else enjoyed the Summer Cookout.
"Hm?" Kelly looked at her over the lip of her cup, the ice clattering as she sucked a piece into her plump lips and started chewing. Her deep brown eyes sparkled and held a hint of amusement as she asked, "What part of the question was confusing?"
"You... did you just seriously ask me to..." Cassidy didn't wanna say it. It felt wrong even thinking something like that. She was shocked Kelly would even joke about something that... dirty. Kelly was usually very open and outspoken, but she wasn't prone to perverted humor. At least, not that Cassidy had ever seen or heard.
Kelly cupped her chin in her hand, elbow leaning on the old peeling table. "To have a threesome with me and Jack? Yeah. I did." She grinned sweetly with just a hint of mischief as her dark-rimmed glasses slipped down the bridge of her nose. The darkness of her coffee-tinted brown eyes was intense as she met Cassidy's own bright blue.
Cassidy sat up straighter and again her eyes darted all around, making sure no one was close enough to hear a happily married mother of two uttering something so bold and obscene. She looked towards the open field across from the pavilion where several games were going on; corn hole, horseshoes, and a game of flag football with the kids against the adults. She wasn't even sure what she was looking for until her eyes found him. Kelly's husband, Jack, was running full tilt across the grass with a gaggle of kids, chasing and screaming like the feral children from Lord of the Flies. He was all smiles, face red and glistening, dark gray hoodie stained with sweat.
Watching the man run, his thighs strong and muscular in his athletic shorts, it was hard not to be impressed by him. A sweet man. Nothing but a giving and solid friend. Never once had he hit on Cassidy, or anyone else for that matter. He only had eyes for Kelly. Her friend was a tall brunette, who had an elegance to her that seemed so natural and effortless that it was hard to imagine her ever being awkward or uncomfortable. Dark, wavy hair fell around her face, framing her strong cheekbones and sweet mouth that was frequently curved upward into a kind, but sly grin. Jack, in contrast, was quieter but still boisterous when the situation called for it. He was the kind of thoughtful friend who noticed when someone was quiet or withdrawn and pulled them into the conversation. Kelly was the social butterfly, able to fly anywhere and shine and be brilliant. Jack was the solid, warm foundation, lifting the mood and making sure everyone enjoyed themselves. They were a couple that everyone looked at with a smile, no exceptions.
This had to be a joke. Kelly and Jack were not the type to... well, Cassidy didn't really know what someone who wanted a threesome was like. Were they actually different from everyone else? Or were there people all around her that were secretly harboring these fantasies? Kelly suddenly felt like she was living an episode of The Twilight Zone. She brushed a strand of red-brown hair from her face that had come undone from the braid she'd tied her hair in that morning, feeling suddenly flushed and nervous.
Kelly crunched another ice cube. "Hey, I see you over there, overthinking things." She grinned and reached out, patting her friend's hand. "Don't be getting all twisted over this. If the answer is 'no' I completely understand. No hard feelings."
"I just..." Cassidy cleared her throat and took a quick drink of her lemonade, suddenly feeling like her mouth was a dessert. "Um, why... uh, why are you asking me? Like, Kelly, are you being serious?" Her cheeks were on fire and her stomach was clenching.
Kelly put her cup down, still resting her chin in her palm. "Yeah. Of course. I wouldn't joke about this. I mean, sex isn't all that special, but I'm not gonna joke around like that. I wouldn't ask you if I didn't take this seriously." Her smile was so disarming and calm.
How in the freaking world is she not... not freaking out like I am? Cassidy screamed in her head. Thankfully, she didn't scream it out for real. Instead, she heaved a slow breath and took hold of her cup because she needed to reassure herself that she was still in the real world and not some sort of dream. "Okay. So. Um. You're asking me to... to uh..."
Kelly was nodding slowly, watching Cassidy process. "Go on." She encouraged.
"To have, um, to have sex with Jack..."
"And me. It's a threesome." She held up three fingers, one of them glittering with her diamond wedding ring.
Cassidy's eyes darted back to the field where Jack was getting mobbed by the kids. He stuck his arms up into the air like he was drowning and cried out with a laugh as the kids swarmed and he vanished beneath them. Cassidy had never thought of Jack in terms of attraction. Of course he was good-looking, there was no denying that. But you just didn't think about your best friend's husband that way. Her brain classified Jack firmly as a friend, not as a sexual prospect. At least, not till now. Suddenly, Kelly's suggestion had blown open a gate in her mind, and she was noticing his muscles. Not overly toned, but they had clean lines. Sweat stuck his grey hoodie to his chest, showing how broad it was. His jaw was firm and square, with a little salt and pepper stubble on it. His grin was electric, and his backside wasn't bad, either.
She shook her head quickly and looked back to Kelly, who was eyeing her with a raised eyebrow and a sly grin, as if she knew Cassidy had been objectifying her husband.
"Did Jack...I mean... was this his idea?" Cassidy still couldn't wrap her head around what she was talking about with her best friend.
Kelly snorted and shook her head, sitting up and brushing her hair back, tying it in a low, messy ponytail. "Are you kidding me? No way. Jack can be pretty wild in bed, but he knows better than to suggest bringing another woman into the bedroom to his wife. I mean, besides a joke here and there. This is all me."
Now Cassidy was even more confused.
