Amy lied awake in bed. She didn't normally drink, but she had, unknowingly, the day and night before. She and her husband, Tom, had gone to Tom's brother's house for a barbeque and to play Texas Hold 'em.
While everyone ate, Amy drank iced tea, like she normally did. Tom and his brother, Rick, had a few beers, as did Rick's friends Mark, James, and James's wife Sarah.
Amy had never met Mark or Sarah, but they seemed to be good people. It was a hot day, everyone else wanted ice-cold beers to drink. It was hot enough that Amy ended up having a few large glasses of ice tea herself.
After the barbeque was over, everyone hung out on the patio and talked. Amy admitted that she felt the sun was getting to her because she felt a little light-headed, not like she was going to pass out, but she did feel a little woozy.
Tom asked Amy if she wanted to lie down for a while, and she told him that the important thing was for her to stay hydrated. Mark got up and told Amy that he'd refill her glass if she would like, and Amy thanked him.
Mark had been very nice. He'd filled Amy's glass every time it was empty. Although Amy had only worn a tank top and shorts, Mark had complimented Amy on how nice she looked, a few times.
Mark was James and Sarah's friend. Rick had met Mark a few times and liked him. And this was the first time that Amy and Tom had met Mark or Sarah. They'd met James a couple of times before the barbeque.
They'd planned on playing poker by around seven o'clock, but they didn't get everything set up until around nine. Mark had commented that they might as well enjoy the day as much as they could, and everyone agreed.
Amy was an avid iced tea drinker. Mark had made the tea that day, it was really, really good, and Amy told Mark so. Rick, Tom, James, Sarah, and Mark smoked some weed. And Amy attributed her continued lightheadedness to possibly getting a contact high.
Amy felt relaxed and got a little giggly. She was having a good time. Everyone seemed to be.
Before the barbeque, Amy had played Texas Hold 'em online. She wasn't that good at it, but she wanted to play at Rick's house with everyone. So, she practiced.
Amy had the traditional first-timer luck. She won some pretty big pots. Because she was a beginner, Amy was hard to read. No one got upset during the game, mostly because no one played stupidly.
After the blinds had been raised three times, Rick asked everyone if they were needing a break, to at least stretch their legs. It was unanimous. Amy stepped out on the patio and Mark followed her.
"For a first-timer, you've been doing very well in there."
Amy smiled at Mark and told him that she had truly been lucky.
Amy told Mark that this was the first time she had played poker in real life, not on her PC. Mark told Amy that there's a first time for everything.
Amy asked Mark how he knew James and Sarah.
"Some people might think it's weird," Mark said, "But we met through FetLife."
Amy looked at Mark, confused.
"It's an alternative lifestyle website," Mark explained. "No matter what you're into, you can find like-minded people there."
Amy wasn't usually this inquisitive, but she asked, "So, what is it that you're into?"
"Me? I'm into pretty much anything."
"And what are James and Sarah into?"
Mark smiled and replied, "You'll have to ask them."
Sarah walked out onto the patio, kissed Mark, and asked what was going on. Mark informed Sarah that he was telling Amy that they had met on FetLife. Sarah smiled at Amy and asked if she was on FetLife, too. Amy shook her head and told Sarah that until Mark mentioned it she had never heard of the site.
Sarah stated, "Since Craigslist stopped doing personal ads, FetLife is where a lot of us have gone."
Amy smiled at Sarah, and said, "Mark says that he's pretty much into anything, but he said I had to ask you what you were into, he didn't want to tell me."
Sarah smiled at Mark, then at Amy. She said, "Mark is very discreet."
Amy noticed that Sarah and Mark were holding hands. She figured they had to be very good friends since Sarah was married to James and not to Mark.
Amy asked Sarah and Mark how long they'd known each other. Mark told Amy they met about a year ago. Amy didn't want to jump to conclusions, but she had seen Sarah kiss Mark, and now they were holding hands. She did wonder what James would say if he saw the two of them together kissing and holding hands.
When Tom came out onto the patio, he nodded to everyone and told Amy that he, Rick, and James wanted to play again.
When Amy, Sarah, and Mark returned to the table, James asked, "You guys have a good time together?"
Amy smiled and said that they were just talking outside.
"I didn't ask what you were doing. I asked if you had a good time."
Amy sheepishly smiled and said that it was good.
James smirked, "What's important is knowing how to have a good time."
Amy wasn't sure what James was trying to say. So, she just let his words pass and she sat down at the table.
Rick dealt cards to everyone. Once everyone was in play, Rick burned one and turned up three Kings. After everyone bet, the turn card was put down. It was the Queen of Spades. James quickly said, "Three Kings and a Queen of spades. Now that's a sight to see."
Rick, Sarah, and Mark laughed. Tom and Amy looked at each other. Amy smiled, and then commented, "Add another Queen and we'll all have a full house."
James laughed and added, "Add another King and that Queen is going to be full of Kings."
Amy knew that adding another King wouldn't be a full house. So, she wasn't sure what James meant, especially the way he said it.
The river card turned out to be a Jack of Spades. As soon as Rick laid down the Jack, James said, "Now we got a woman and a man that both like Kings. Now that's exciting."
Amy wasn't sure what James was trying to say, but she wanted to seem like she knew. She smiled and replied, "I agree. It doesn't get any more exciting than that."
James looked at Sarah and Mark, then back at Amy, and said, "I wasn't sure if you were into that, but it's good to know that you are." Then James looked at Tom and said, "Do we consider you the Jack?"
The action was on Amy, and she said, "I'm all in." She'd been holding the King of Hearts and the Ace of clubs.
Tom pushed his hand in.
James said, "I'd love to be part of that action, but I fold."
Sarah looked at her cards again, then pushed them in.
Mark was holding the Ace of Spades and the Ace of hearts. He knew he had a good hand, but he wasn't willing to get a bad beat. So, he, too, pushed his hand in.
Rick had a pair of tens, but he felt that Amy held the better hand. He pushed his cards in as well. Then he pushed all the chips in Amy's direction.
Amy threw out her cards, showing everyone that she did have the winning hand.
Rick reached out to gather the cards and James stopped him. James looked at Amy and said, "If we were playing with six cards, and there was another Queen on the board, that hand would be a reflection of all of us."
Amy looked at the cards again as she put away her chips, and then asked, "What do you mean?"
"Well," James replied, pointing to each card, "Rick, me, Mark, you, and if there was another Queen, Sarah, and the Jack, which would be Tom."
Sarah told James to knock it off.
"What? She said she was all in."
Sarah sighed, then told Amy that James can be pushy at times.
Amy smiled and told Sarah, "I don't think he's being pushy. But I do think he talks in riddles."
"James was hoping that we'd play strip poker tonight."
"Strip poker? You mean like taking our clothes off?" Amy giggled and added, "I don't have much on as it is. That would be a quick game."
James interrupted, saying, "It's not how long the game lasts. It's what happens after the clothes are off that matters." Then he said, "We're all friends here. Right?"
