"So, let me get this straight. You tell Lee that you're going away with Nurse McSteamy for the entire weekend, and then you spend the next three days fucking yourself silly; is that right? What is this, Grey's Anatomy? Please tell me that I misunderstood you somewhere."
"No, that about covers it."
Trudy snorted a laugh and shook her head at Regina, who looked straight ahead of her. Right now, the two sisters sat on white, plastic outdoor furniture that decorated a patio overlooking a backyard. Overhead awning that extended from the stylish one-story house provided cover from the heat of the afternoon. The breeze that intermittently wisped around touched the skin with cool, soft caresses.
Regina enjoyed the time she spent with Trudy. The two weren't especially close as younger siblings but had grown so after the death of their mother. Now, they practically had open invitations to each other's homes. They came and went as they damn well pleased and dared their husbands to have an ill word to say about it.
Right now, Trudy looked at her younger sister with a mixture of perverted admiration for her audacity and incredulous horror for her stupidity.
A part of her got a sort of evil pleasure out of it. In her opinion, Lee deserved a little comeuppance for doing what he did. His actions destroyed Regina, and the fallout of consequences continued to do so every day.
On the other hand, Trudy recognized this for what it really was: self-destructive behavior.
It had been a few hours since Regina's argument with Lee. He left in a fit of rage, with slamming doors and squealing tires. As the seconds clicked into minutes, and those minutes reached 60, she figured that she was tired of sitting in the house and crying.
So, she went to the place that she always went to when words needed spilling; Trudy's patio.
"Well, I gotta hand it to you; it took a big, hairy set of balls to pull that shit off. I'm kind of impressed in some twisted way. I never would have thought you had it in you." Trudy said with a snicker.
Regina sighed and looked off into the back yard. The sunglasses covering her eyes shaded the sadness in them.
"Lee wasn't as impressed with my balls as you are."
Trudy shook her head and harrumphed into her cup of iced tea before she took a sip. "Did you expect him to be?"
The wind caught a wisp of Regina's hair and feathered it in her face. With the crook of her finger, she caught it and tucked it behind her ear.
"Of course not. I just...I don't know. Maybe I shouldn't have done it." she said as her eyes fell to her lap.
"Maybe you shouldn't have?" Trudy asked dramatically, astonished that Regina would make that a "maybe" statement. "I get the whole trying to teach him a lesson line of thought, but that never works. All it does is exacerbate an already volatile situation."
"I wasn't trying to teach him a lesson or anything like that." Regina said as she momentarily looked her sister in the eyes. She had to turn away though. Her stare was just too hard to look at. "I did it because I wanted to. It had nothing to do with Lee."
Trudy leaned forward with her elbows perched on the table that sat between them. As always, her eyes studied her sister critically when she spoke. Regina said so much more than the words she chose; one just had to pay attention. Her face was an open window. Even her body language betrayed her when she said something she didn't fully believe.
"C'mon Gee Gee. It had nothing to do with him? Really?" she asked skeptically. Then she shook her head and spit out, "Bullshit."
Regina's eyes widened with the incredulity at being called out. Her mouth popped open with choice words to cut in and defend herself, but Trudy was having none of it. She held her hand up and shook her head before Regina could even start protesting.
"Yes, Yes. I'm calling bullshit on that one, sis. No one tells their husband that they're about to fuck another guy unless they want to hurt him. No one. You're a smart girl. You could have done what most people do and had a quick, discrete one-night stand. Hell, you could have had a full-blown affair and got away with it for months. But you didn't. You wanted to be Miss High and Mighty and make a point about being upfront about cheating instead of waiting to get caught. But most of all, you wanted that man to suffer. So, you went away for 3 days and cut off all communication with him because you knew that he would be sitting in that house torturing himself with images of what you were doing. The movie in his head was probably 10 times worse than what was really happening. It would probably have been more merciful to just send him some pictures; at least he wouldn't have had to wonder."
Regina's cut her eyes at Trudy with a scowl on her face. Sometimes, she hated her sister's busy-bodied observations. What really irritated her was something that she didn't want to admit; how on the money she was.
"Since when do you take his side?" She asked bitterly as she sat back and crossed her legs angrily. The foot that dangled in the air shook nervously.
"I'm always on your side, Gee Gee. Always have been. And you know I'm not the biggest fan of Lee; not after he did what he did. Personally, I think you should have cut his dick off when you found out."
Regina almost had to smile at that. Almost. When he looked at her sister's face, the serious expression stopped her lips from curling upwards. There was more.
"But?"
Trudy smiled a small smile used to soften the blow of a controversial statement. "But...I think it's time that you started being honest. Whatever you have going on with you started long before Lee cheated. You've been angry for a while now, and to tell you the truth, I don't think it has anything to do with him."
She paused for a moment. She knew her next words were going to strike a nerve, and she regretted saying them. But she loved her sister and realized that she'd stood silent for far too long now. She didn't want to say anything to add to Regina's pain, but her silence implied agreement with what was going on.
Part of her blamed herself for this debacle. Regina looked up to her, and she shouldn't have passively sat back hoping that things would work out.
With hesitance, she finished what she wanted to say. "I think you're still depressed about...you know."
She knew. Regina's lips pursed angrily, and she shook her head vigorously as she put her hand up to stop her sister from talking. Without another word, she began to gather her purse and prepare to leave.
"Regina..." Trudy called with exasperation. She knew this would happen. "C'mon; stop. Sit back down. Don't leave. You always do this whenever anyone tries to talk about Cass..."
"SHUT UP! Just shut up!" Regina screamed suddenly. Her finger pointed menacingly as she glared at her sister. "Don't even SAY her name!"
Trudy popped up from her seat and returned her sister's icy stare with a determined look of her own. "No! I won't shut up! I'm gonna say what I have to say because I love you and I can't stand to see you in so much pain!
Regina started to stomp away, but Trudy wasn't having it. She rushed around the table to block her escape and stood in front of her with a defiant look.
"Get outta my way." Regina sinisterly warned as her eyes narrowed.
