Jill came bounding out the front door as Robert and Sue Ferguson exited their SUV. She hugged both of them and said, "Thank you. Thank you. You two are a godsend. First, you are putting us up and now helping out with the packing."
Jill and her husband, Dave Smith, are "downsizing" as they called it. They actually were just going from a larger house in the city to a smaller and more expensive one by the lake. Their daughter was soon graduating from college, and their son had started college, so they were empty nesters. They decided that the big house that they have, which is located close to schools, is no longer needed, and they can finally move to that house with the view that they are building by the lake.
Unfortunately, the timing bug has bitten them. Their new house won't be completed for two more months, and a very attractive offer came in for their current home, but the buyers required the deal to close next Monday. Robert and Sue are here on the Tuesday before to help Jill because Dave is away at a training session for new electrical hardware that his company is installing on a project that starts in two weeks.
Robert and Sue were going to put Dave and Jill up for the next two months in their spare room, so before Friday, when the movers showed up, the house contents had to be organized. What was going to storage, to be donated, or to the dump?
Dave and Jill had already identified the furniture that they wanted to keep for the new house and had already sold or donated all the furniture that wasn't needed. So, Robert had taken the day off to help Sue and Jill go through everything else.
Dave had ordered a dumpster which was sitting in front of Robert's SUV in the driveway.
Sue and Jill were going to start going through the kitchen and bedrooms to pack things up.
Robert asked, "Jill, where do you want me to start?"
Jill said, "You can pull everything out of the basement storage and the attic."
=======
Robert and Dave met in high school. Initially, they were lumped together because they looked similar--they had the same height, hair color, and physique--so the other kids in school labeled them "The Twins."
Although they hated it at first, they grew to like their nickname, and a friendship solidified. It didn't hurt that their fathers worked together on some construction projects. Robert's dad owned a plumbing contracting company, and Dave's an electrical contractor. Both of their fathers were a bit of a taskmaster. Any day they were off school, they would be on the job with their fathers. Learning their father's trade.
They both went to college, renting a place together, for business degrees as their fathers wanted them prepared to take over their businesses.
At college, Dave met Jill. She was a cheerleader for the football team.
Robert was never sure if Jill liked Dave for Dave or for the fact that he drove a fancy car. You see, there was one big difference between their fathers. Robert's father was a bottom-line kind of guy. He didn't need fancy things, so he took a decent salary but put as much money into the business so he could improve and grow it. Dave's father, however, liked the finer things in life, so while he did grow the business, he did take more money out of it.
Robert's father drove a 15-year-old pickup, but his plumbers always had the best vans and equipment. He never wanted to see equipment fail before it was replaced. Dave's father leased his personal car and always got the latest and greatest, but he allowed his company's equipment and vehicles to die before they were replaced.
So, while Dave and Robert both had cars at college, Dave drove a brand-new Corvette while Robert drove a used Honda Civic. Dave's car was a high school graduation present from his parents. Robert selected and bought his car with the money that he made working with his father.
It was in the third year that Dave and Jill became an item, and after a while, Dave tried to get Robert interested in Jill's best friend and fellow cheerleader, Sue.
Robert thought she was way out of his league, but after being pressured by Dave and Jill, and the fact that he thought that this would likely be his only chance to go out with someone so hot looking, he decided, "What the fuck."
They went out on a double date. Dinner and then dancing. They had a few slow dances, and Robert couldn't believe the feeling of her molding up against his body. He had girlfriends before, but nothing like the chemistry he felt that night. Sue had invited him back to her place after. To "continue dancing," as she put it, Robert still wasn't sure why she would even be interested in him, and he preferred to take things slow anyhow. She was disappointed but said she understood.
The next day, Dave came out of his room after a rocking session with Jill that night. Robert was on the couch reading through some class material, eating a breakfast burrito that he just pulled from the Microwave.
Dave said laughing, "Jill will be coming out of the room soon, but she may be walking a bit funny." He slapped Robert on the back. "Why didn't you tap Sue last night, she was willing?"
Robert shrugged, "You know me. I like to take it a little more slowly before jumping into bed with them. Make sure that there could be something first."
Dave punched him in the shoulder, "Trust me, there is something there between you two. And besides, she is Jill's best friend, so the four of us would be real tight."
Robert sat back, taking another bite of his breakfast. After swallowing, he said, "You might be right, but I have to see how things go. She may not even want another date with me."
Jill came out of Dave's bedroom at this moment. She was wearing one of Dave's T-shirts. It barely covered her. Robert looked back to his book. It wasn't that he was embarrassed by her. She was amazing-looking. He just thought that since she was Dave's girlfriend, it wasn't his place to stare.
Jill said, "Oh, there will be another date. She sent me a text. She was really into you."
Robert sat there and said, "I don't get it. Why me?"
Jill hugged Robert and kissed him on the cheek. "You underestimate yourself."
