Ch.03 SINS OF THE PAST

Mina left the police station and got into her car. As she started the engine, a haunting emotional background score began playing in the car stereo. And memories of her childhood flooded her mind.

Flashback: 2006

If evil had a face, it would be him—the man who had destroyed a small, loving family from Russia. They had come to the United States seeking refuge, hoping to live the American dream, but Robert “Rob” had other intentions. Her father, an honest accountant, fled Russia to give his family a better life. Mina was only nine when they arrived in the U.S. Her parents started working at Target as sales associates. They rented a small house, and both children enrolled in a public school.

They were a small, God-fearing, loving family. They laughed together, ate together, and cried together. Her father, Milos, was the best father anyone could ask for. He always wore a smile, no matter how much he struggled, and worked tirelessly to provide a good life for his kids.

Every weekend, Mina and Milos would visit the mall. McDonald’s was her favorite place, and she always ordered a burger and ice cream. One day, while shopping, Mina saw a dollhouse that she desperately wanted. Milos didn’t have the money to buy it, but he began working extra hours to earn overtime pay. Eventually, on Mina’s birthday, he surprised her with the dollhouse. She was overjoyed.

Every day, Mina and Milos played together with the dollhouse. Mina would take on various roles—sometimes a doctor, sometimes a pilot or an actress—and Milos would enthusiastically join her in completing the story. Their bond was unbreakable. They didn’t have much money, but their lives were rich with love and respect.

Mina’s mother, Elena, was a gorgeous woman. She was soft-spoken, hardworking, and always managed to balance her job and household chores. Elena cooked wonderful meals and helped both children with their studies. No matter how busy they were, her parents never missed a single school event, always showing up to support their children.

It was a rainy night, and Elena was wrapping up her shift when the man who would change everything walked into the store. His eyes immediately locked on Elena. He started looking at Elena with lust,it was instantaneous.

He was tall, standing at 6’2”, a white, muscular man in a police uniform. Introducing himself as Robert, or “Rob,” he approached Elena with confidence. His questions quickly turned personal—asking about her family, her home, and where she was from. Elena felt uneasy but maintained her professionalism, hoping he would leave soon. After a few minutes, he did.

Elena finished her shift and stepped outside, waiting for the rain to stop before heading home. Her house was about a 10-minute walk away. She called Milos to let him know she’d be home soon and to take care of the kids. She assured him she would start walking as soon as the rain stop.

Not to her imagination, Rob hadn’t left. He was waiting in his police car nearby, watching her. Moments later, he pulled up his car near to Elena and rolled down his window.

Rob: “Hey, come on in, I’ll give you a ride.”

Elena: “No, thank you, My house is close by, I’ll walk.”

Rob: “It’s okay. It’s my job to help. Besides, it’s New York rain—it won’t stop anytime soon. Come on, get in.”

Reluctantly, Elena got into his police car, clutching her bag tightly.

Rob: “So, where do you live?”

Elena: “Just nearby, in East Harlem.”

Rob: “Ah, the refugee area. I could tell from your accent and looks. Where are you from?”

Elena: “Russia.”

Rob: “Wow. So many Russians coming to New York these days. I’m a captain in the patrol division. I keep a watch on crime and criminals”.

Rob laughed like a devil. Soon Elena’s home came. She asked him to stop.

Rob took a long look at Elena’s apartment before driving off.

From that day on, he began keeping a close watch on her. He started showing up at the store more frequently, always trying to strike up a conversation. His presence made Elena increasingly uneasy, and she told Milos everything.

One day, Milos decided to confront Rob. Gathering his courage, he approached the officer and politely requested that he stop bothering Elena.

Milos: “Officer, I need to ask you to stop visiting my wife at her workplace. She feels uncomfortable with your frequent visits.”

As expected, Rob didn’t take it well. His face twisted with anger. He grabbed Milos by the collar, pulling him close and glaring into his eyes.

Rob: “You’ve got some nerve talking to me like that. Listen closely—because I’m only going to say this once. I’ll do whatever I want with her. I will fuck her, not once, not twice—whenever I feel like it. You better get used to it.”

He let out a devilish laugh and walked away, leaving Milos shaken and humiliated.

When Milos told Elena about the confrontation, they decided they couldn’t stay silent any longer. Together, they went to the police station to file a complaint.

After explaining their situation to an officer, they were asked to wait in the Bureau Chief’s office. They sat there nervously for a long time before the chief finally arrived.

Bureau Chief: “Good evening. I’ve been informed about your complaint—apologies for the delay. I was in a meeting. Let me assure you, Rob will not bother you again. You have my word on that. Now, if you still wish to file a formal complaint, that’s entirely up to you. However, let me be honest—it might unnecessarily complicate your immigration process. You’d likely be called in for discussions repeatedly, and that can create… inconveniences. You understand what I’m saying, don’t you?”

Milos, with a blank expression, nodded silently.

Bureau Chief: “Don’t get me wrong. It’s just that Rob is a highly influential officer. He has a good reputation among the higher-ups and solid connections. I can’t guarantee a transparent or favorable resolution to this complaint. But let me handle it in my way—I’ll ensure Rob stays away from your wife.”

The Chief’s words left them feeling powerless, but they had no choice but to trust his assurances.

They left without filing a police complaint. That day, Milos felt powerless—like someone who couldn’t protect his wife from another man. He spent the night awake, praying to God for help.

The next few days passed uneventfully. Rob had stopped coming to the store, and things began to feel normal again for Milos and Elena. While they remained cautious, they started to feel at ease, thinking that the bureau chief had delivered on his promise.

It was December 22, 2006—another stormy night in New York. It was the eve of their wedding anniversary. Milos had bought small gifts and a cake for their kids. After closing the store, both Elena and Milos began walking home. As usual, they held hands, cracked jokes, and made plans for the night and the next day. Elena suggested taking their kids out for lunch and a movie the following day, to which Milos instantly agreed.

They had covered only half the distance home when a car stopped nearby. Two men jumped out, grabbed Elena, forced her into the car, and drove away.

The gifts and cake fell from Milos’s hands as he started running after the car, desperate to save his wife. He ran a few meters, but the car soon disappeared from sight. He immediately dialed 911 and explained what had happened.

After few minutes which felt like days to Milos, two police officers arrived. They took Milos’s statement and asked him to return home while they searched for his wife.

The car stopped at a large penthouse. The men grabbed Elena and forced her into the elevator. Blindfolded, she was soon handed over to Rob by the gangsters. As he removed the cloth from her eyes, she gasped and shouted in shock upon seeing him. That devilish laugh returned, and this time, she was trapped inside a penthouse.

Soon Elena was made to stretch out on the floor with her arms and legs tied wide out and a bean bag placed under her, making her arch painfully and left her struggling.

Next he applies oil all over her naked body and kept kneading her skin and sensitive areas. Elena kept crying shouting for help.

Rob slapped her hard and spanked her thighs. He then blindfolded her again. She couldn't see what he was doing because of the blindfold. Then he brought a vibrator and toyed with her clitoris and nipples as she struggled to free herself. Soon her body began sweating profusely. He asked Elena if she was ready to submit. She was still defiant.

He started eating her nipples with his teeth making her shout in pain, his fingers found her vagina and cruelly penetrated it making her scream from pain. He spanked her tits harder and harder till she screamed from pain.

He did not allow her to rest for a bit. Finally when nothing worked , he untied her eyes and threatened her to kill her family. The fear of losing her family made her submit to the devil. After her submission, he raped her multiple times. She cried, folded her hands, gave him a reference to God, and begged him to leave her and let her go. But he did not stop. The whole night, he kept her, and the next day, she was dropped off at home by the men who had brought her.

Elena entered the house in a terrible state. She couldn’t explain what she had been through to Milos. Overcome with emotion, she collapsed in his lap and began crying.

December 23, 2006—their wedding anniversary. After Elena took a bath, they decided to go to the police station and file a complaint. They wanted Rob to pay for his crimes. They wanted him to face capital punishment. Suddenly, they heard a loud banging at the door. Milos went to open it and found the devil standing there.

Rob shoved the door open, and Milos fell to the ground. Rob pulled out a gun and shot him in the leg. After that he took Elena to bedroom and raped her again. This time in front of Milos. Mina was also watching all of this from her room, frightened and crying. She tried to protect her brother. After about 30 minutes, Rob came out of the bedroom and called “Ady”upstairs. He had planted packets of drugs in their bedroom and filed a case of drug peddling against Milos.

In the following days, Rob assaulted Elena whenever he wanted. He frequently visited her apartment. He threatened to kill her and do the same to their daughter. Elena couldn’t endure the pain for much longer, and one night, she ended her life by jumping from their apartment. She left a note blaming Rob, but the police destroyed it.

Later, Rob had Milos killed in jail, as he had become a real threat to him after Elena’s suicide. The children were sent to an orphanage, and Milos and Elena’s American dream was shattered. They left this world without a trace.

A few years later, Rob took voluntary retirement, as his sins became too difficult to cover up. He had amassed enormous wealth through corruption and his close ties with the mafia. His whereabouts were kept secret, and he vanished from the public eye. The bureau chief ended up becoming the Mayor and Ady is his new commissioner.

Present day, December 2024.

Ady called Martin to his cabin.

Martin: “May I come in, chief?”

Ady: “Yes, please. I want you to look into the 2006 drug peddling case of Milos Mashkov. I need to know what happened to his kids.”

Martin: “Sure, sir. I’ll get that information back to you.”

Ady left the office to meet the mayor. He waited for about 30 minutes and was finally called inside to his office.

Mayor: “Hey, Ady, how are you? What’s so urgent? Is everything okay?”

Ady: “Yes, Mayor, Sorry for bothering you on such short notice, but I have an urgent matter.”

Mayor: “Go on, I’m listening.”

Ady: “I need to know about Rob.”

Mayor: [Surprised] “Why, after all this time? Since you took charge of the state?”

Ady: “His life is in danger.”

Mayor: [Laughs] “Hahahaha!”

Ady: “Someone’s planning to kill him.”

Mayor: “And who’s planning this? We know every criminal by their origin. No one wants Rob dead.”

Ady: “It’s Milos and Elena’s daughter who wants him dead.”

Mayor: “Who are Milos and Elena?”

Ady: “The couple who came to you when you were Bureau Chief, asking for help.”

Mayor: [Angrily] “What the hell are you trying to say? I don’t remember anything. Get out of here and do your job. Rob can handle his own affairs. You should be focusing on saving that girl from being killed by him.”

Ady: “She’s asked me to kill him.”

Mayor: “And?”

Ady: “If I don’t, she’ll frame me for a false murder. And if I go down, I’ll take you with me.”

Mayor: “You’re threatening me?”

Ady: “No, I’m just asking for your help in finding Rob’s whereabouts.”

Mayor: “What will you do with that information?”

Ady: “Protect him and catch the girl and her accomplices.”

Mayor: “Okay, file a false case against her, get her locked up, and we’ll handle the rest.”

Ady: “She’s not alone. She must have help. Let me talk to Rob, please.”

Mayor: [After a long pause] “Alright. Let me speak with him and I’ll update you. Until then, keep an eye on the girl. I want to protect both of you.”

Ady left the mayor’s office and received a call from Martin.

Martin: “Sir, I’ve found out. Milos had two kids: Mina and Rusev. Mina is the girl who came to meet you today. She was raised in an orphanage.”

Ady: “Tell me about Rusev.”

Martin: “Well, he was adopted when he was 9. His adoptive parents were Canadian. The last records from the orphanage show that he left for Canada when he was 12, and after that, there’s no trace. I’ve requested his latest photo and details from our investigative wing.”

Ady: “Good. What was his name after adoption?”

Martin: “Charles Henry.”

Ady: “Did he keep in contact with Mina?”

Martin: “Sir, the orphanage records show no information after he was 12 and moved to Canada.”

Ady: “Okay, text me as soon as you hear from the investigative wing. And go and keep a watch on Mina. I want to know, everyone she meets and all her details”.

Martin: “okay, sir”.

Ady hung up the phone and left for home.

That night, he received a call from a private number. He picked up the phone, and a devilish laugh echoed through the line.

Ady: “Rob?”

Rob: “You got me. I like that you haven’t forgotten your mentor.”

Ady: “Well, I need to tell you something.”

Rob: “First of all, congrats on becoming Chief. You’re going to be very important to me and the Mayor.”

Ady: “Thanks. But I want to talk about Milos.”

Rob: “Who’s Milos?”

Ady: “The guy you shot. Remember him? The drug peddler?”

Rob: “Oh, that Russian criminal? The one who died in jail? What about him?”

Ady: “Well, he had two kids. One of them is Mina. She’s a journalist, and she wants to kill you. She thinks you wronged her father.”

Rob: [Laughs] “Hahaha, and you’re scared? I can’t believe this, Ady. You’re a fucking pussy.”

Ady: “Listen to me, please. She’s not just some girl—she got someone killed and framed me. She’s not alone either. It could be her brother or someone else protecting her. And she’s a journalist, so she likely has good contacts. Don’t underestimate her.”

Rob: “Get me her address and details. I’ll handle it myself.”

Ady: “I want you to be cautious. It’s my job to protect every citizen.”

Rob: [Laughs] “Okay, then protect her from me.”

Ady: “I can send police protection to you, if you need it.”

Rob: [Laughing again] “Yeah, send them to my place. I’ll treat them well. You’re a crazy kid. I’ll handle this and take it from here.”

Rob put the phone down.

Soon, Ady received a WhatsApp location from Rob, accompanied by a smiley emoji. The message read, “Sweets on me, send her this.”

Martin drove toward Mina’s house and parked his car at a corner. He looked through binoculars and saw her car parked outside. He got out of the car and walked past her house. He could see her standing in the lawn and speaking on the phone. He quickly turned around, got back in his car, and sat there, watching.

Mina picked up her phone and dialed her brother.

Mina: [Crying] “Rusev, I remember everything… everything again. I can’t sleep.”

Rusev: “You have to be strong. We need to take revenge.”

Mina: “I know, but I can’t. I’m remembering Mom and Dad… today is their anniversary.”

Rusev: “I know. Be strong. I’m keeping an eye on Ady. He went to the mayor’s office. I’m sure he’s asking about that bastard’s location.”

Mina: “What do you think? Will he give it to us?”

Rusev: “No. We need to take his wife or son.”

Mina: “Okay, but remember, I’ll kill that bastard myself. Don’t harm his wife or kid—they have nothing to do with this.”

Rusev: “I know. Don’t worry. They’ll be a bait for him to give us Rob’s location. I’ll get them picked up ASAP.”

Mina: “I love you, my brother. If anything happens to me, remember—you need to take revenge on them. You have to kill them. Promise me.”

Rusev: “I promise. I won’t let anything happen to you, and together, we’ll kill them both.”

As Ady was driving back, he received a WhatsApp message from Martin. It was an image of Charles Henry, a.k.a. Rusev.

Ady picked up his phone and dialed Martin.

Ady: “Thanks, Martin. Where are you?”

Martin: “Outside Mina’s house.”

Ady: “Is she there?”

Martin: “Yes, she was speaking on the phone with someone when I walked past her house.”

Ady: “Okay, and this guy, Charles— is he in the U.S.?”

Martin: “No, he was last seen in Mexico. He works at a refinery there. This photo was taken a few months ago when he entered Mexico.”

Ady: “Okay, keep an eye on him. I need all his details—his friends, his family, everything. And don’t leave Mina’s house. Her life is in danger too.”

Martin: “Got it. I’ll keep an eye on both.”

Ady reached home and found Kris all alone. He asked her about Karen. Kris told him that she had left in a black sedan. Ady tried calling Karen, but her phone was switched off. He also contacted some of her friends, but none of them had any idea where she was. He decided to drop Kris off at her sister’s place. He tried calling Martin, but his phone was out of the coverage area. Multiple thoughts raced through Ady’s mind.

He contacted his investigative team and informed them about Karen. Then, he headed to the traffic police office to review footage from the cameras installed near his house. Upon arrival, he was granted access to all the cameras in the vicinity. From the footage, he saw Karen entering a black sedan. The car had tinted windows, so the driver wasn’t visible. Her entry into the car appeared friendly. The department quickly scanned the car’s license plate and discovered that it was registered to Mina.

He started driving toward Mina’s house, assuming that Martin and Karen’s lives might be in danger. Two police cars followed closely behind him. Halfway through, he received a call from a private number. He answered and was met with a sinister laugh. It was Rob.

“Hey, junior,” Rob sneered. “I’m sending you a location. Come over here alone. I have Mina and your wife. My guys went to pick up Mina but found another stunner, who turned out to be your wife. It’s hard to control myself around your stunner.”

His voice was dripping with lust. “Now, come on fast. We need to talk. And remember—come alone.” He then sent a location and nude snap of Mina and Karen, both kind of sedated.

Ady gripped the steering wheel tightly, his mind racing fearing Martin is dead by now.
