I'm there for you, man

What is the obligation of a drunken promise?

Brian, Teri, Helen, and I have known each other since high school. I started hanging out with Brian during my freshman year in high school when I found out we were both new to the area and both studied martial arts. Brian hadn't found a dojo in town yet, and my dad planned on taking me to a Wing Chun Dojo after I got settled in school. I invited Brian along, and after checking with his parents, arrangements were made. Brian studied Takuwan Do previously, and I had taken two years of Karate Do before we moved, so when we started at the Wing Chun Dojo it was like we were starting all over again. I know this frustrated both of us at first, but I know for me it made the challenge all that much greater. Somehow, we became the school's martial arts nerds, if there can be such a thing. I think jocks made fun of us because they knew it was a sport they could not compete in, and they definitely couldn't beat us up. Some of the teasing did stop one day when Brian asked the Senior Quarterback. Keep in mind we're freshman.

"Hey, Alan, why don't you drop by the dojo someday? Unless you're afraid," were Brian's words. He was in an open stance, ready for a wicked round kick I have seen him win more than one match with. The smile on Alan's face disappeared, he just turns and walks away.

Teri and Helen are popular young women in high school. They are cheerleaders and gymnasts all four years. Brian starts dating Teri during our Senior year of high school after we had all turned 18. They are taking chemistry classes together and just seem to connect.

Teri and Helen are popular young women in high school. They are cheerleaders and gymnasts all four years. They are taking chemistry classes together and just seem to connect. This brings both of us into conflict with a lot of people because of the unwritten rule that cheerleaders date jocks and no one else. Jocks harass us, coaches harass us, and a few teachers spoke with us about dating cheerleaders and the effect it may have on our grades. Why was I drawn into this? I'm better with my words than Brian, and he is my best friend. Soon, we are standing in front of the principal, the vice principal, the head coach of the football team, two teachers who have been harassing us, Teri, Helen, and all our parents. I get tired of the adults talking in circles, jump to my feet, and speak.

"She can date anyone she wants unless you're running a whore house here," I point an accusing hand at the Principal. He looks shocked for a second, but then he gives me a smirk and a nod.

"And you have some nerve thinking that your stupid team is so special that they be allowed breeding privileges with whomever they want because that is what this argument is actually about." I direct at the head coach.

"Samuel!" My mother exclaims. I ignore her.

"What makes you think your players are superior genetic stock anyway? These two teachers have to hand-feed most of them the answers on the tests, and you wouldn't believe how they have to dumb down the lessons so some of them can understand what is being said. Brian, on the other hand, is a highly-ranked martial artist, almost all his classes are AP, and I believe he was in the top ten of the class before certain teachers started fucking with his grades. I'm personally tired of the shit we have gone through in the name of the school's sacred football team." I say sarcastically. "They aren't even that good this year. What are they, 4 and 4 so far?" The coach looks down, embarrassed. "If this doesn't stop, I'm going to get a lawyer and sue the school for creating a hostile learning environment. So, the harassment needs to stop, our grades need fixed, and some people need to understand that there much more to life than stupid ass high school football," I was done. The adults are stunned. I look around at everyone. No one challenges my argument. The principal nods in agreement. A smile now on his face.

The room is silent for a moment. The coach starts to say something a few times but stops when he looks at the Principal.

"All the staff out," the Principal finally says.

Once they are gone, he speaks again.

"Sam, that was an excellent oral argument. Have you ever considered law school?" He asks. The course of my life is set from that moment on.

The Principal explains he has been struggling with the Football Mafia, as he calls it, for some time and really had no grounds to curtail the actions of the coach and teachers. He promises he will investigate our grades as well as those of the football players, and he will be placing a Letter of Reprimand in the records of each teacher involved.

The Principal uses the threat of a lawsuit against the teachers and coaches for the rest of the year to keep them in line and during the rest of our time in high school. He promises each of them that they will receive no support from the school district if a lawsuit is brought against them, as they have already been warned. I was told the School Superintendent spoke with each of the teachers in private. It wasn't pleasant for them. The Teacher's Union also told them they would receive no union support because what they were doing bordered on prostitution, and the Union wanted no part of it. The coaches and teachers were screwed.

My parents were proud of me, although mom kept talking to me about my language.

Life at school went back to normal for the most part, except that I had a new companion. Helen was in the meeting because she was Teri's best friend and was there for emotional support and as a witness to some of the harassment Teri endured. Helen now hung out with me quite a bit. We walked to classes together and ate lunch together as Brian and Teri had different lunch periods.

Helen is the opposite of Teri. She is more reserved. Teri is blonde with blue eyes. Helen has dark black hair that makes her blue eyes really stand out. Helen admits she only tried out for cheerleading because Teri did. Helen enjoys gymnastics much more and is far better at it.

I am in the Dojo one evening, helping teach a class for younger kids. Helen walks in the door. I excuse myself and go to see what she wants. Helen is interested in joining the Dojo because of all the discussions she has heard between Brian and me about martial arts. I get her enrolled and sell her a gi. I advise her on what type of underclothing to wear with it and lastly, I hand her a White Belt. I'm a Blue Belt, a step down from Black Belt. Black Belts are not handed out in our discipline until the student is both mentally and emotionally mature enough to hold the rank. Our Dojo is not profit-driven, and therefore, Belts are earned. There are no juvenile Black Belts.

A week later, Helen is taking her first class. Brian, Teri, Helen, and I continue to hang out, and life at high school is actually enjoyable. We go out on a lot of dates together, but Helen and I are just friends. Brian and Teri hold hands and make out, but Helen and I just hang out, somewhat uncomfortable at times as Brian and Teri's public displays of affection make us question our own relationship.

Spring of our Senior Year, we are all 18, Helen came into the Dojo to work on her Kata, martial arts routines, and to get some individual training. She needs help sparing as she has a really bad flinch that sparing partners are taking advantage of, causing her to lose bouts. Helen and I are in the back training room, sparing when she throws me to the floor, straddles my chest, and kisses me. I'm shocked. Not that I don't like the kiss, it's great. I just don't understand it.

"What was that?" I ask after she breaks the kiss.

"I didn't think that you were ever going to kiss me, so I kissed you," she explains. "Did you like it?" She asks.

"Yes, I liked it," I admit. She kisses me again, and I kiss her back.

"Why are you kissing me?" I ask after we break the kiss.

"Because I really like you, Sam. Not because we hang out all the time or anything, but because you're a great guy," she says, kissing me again.

My brain shifts as Helen's position in my life moves from friend to object of desire.

"We can't get caught making out in here. We'll get in trouble," I say as I try to get her off me.

Helen giggles in a cute way I come to love as she lets me up, and with that, we are a couple.

Soon, we lose our V Card to one another, and I am proud to say I do give her a few orgasms that evening and the next morning. Her parents are pissed I kept her out all night, and she does get grounded for a week.

We go to Senior Prom together along with Brian and Teri. The night is great, and we watch the sunrise over the mountains. At one point, Brian makes me promise that if anything ever happens to him, I will take care of Teri. It is one of those silly promise's buddies make when they are going through transitions in life, like graduating from high school. I promise him I will take care of Teri should anything happen to him in the future. I think it is hilarious because how well can an 18-year-old headed to college take care of anyone as they are just starting to figure out life? I seriously doubt Brian and Teri will even be together after they go to college and experience college life. Helen and I head to law school. Brian and Teri head off to get their degrees in Chemical Engineering. We stay in touch throughout college. Seeing each other on holiday breaks and over summer vacations. Our senior year of college, we even spent spring break in Costa Rica together. Somehow, Brian and Teri stay together through college. Helen and I have no issues as our relationship grew out of a friendship, and then we fell in love. Brian and Teri marry after they each receive their Master's Degrees and secure great jobs in the city. I am Brian's Best Man, and as his Bachelor's Party winds down, he corners me and makes me promise him again to take care of Teri if anything happens to him. I promise him again I will.

"I'm serious. I want you to take care of her, and I mean in every way," Brain says. He has had quite a bit to drink, and I think he is just being dramatic.

"I promise you, I will take care of her," I say, then I forget about it.

Helen and I marry after we passed the Bar and secured jobs at a great Law Firm we have been interning at during our summer breaks during college. We both practice family law, some Divorce, but also a lot of adoptions.

Life moves forward without too many surprises for a few years. Brian, Teri, Helen, and I spend lots of time together on weekends, hanging out or traveling on vacations.

One pleasant Spring day, I am happy to drop some adoption paperwork at the Courthouse on my way home so I don't arrive at my usual time. When I do arrive at the house, I see Teri's SUV in our driveway and am excited by the idea of spending an enjoyable evening with Brian and Teri. I walk into the house and am smothered by two crying women as Helen and Teri hug me at the door before I can even set down my backpack. Both women are bordering on hysterical. I guide them into the living room, and we sit on the couch. I hold them both for some time.

I can't understand what they are saying as they are hysterical. Something about Brian, and since he is not here, it must be bad. I'm starting to get frustrated and pissed, but I really don't want to yell at either of them to get any answers, so I rely on my martial arts training to center myself to calm down.

"Helen, what is going on?" I ask gently. I am hoping my calming voice will calm her down to the point where she can communicate coherently.

"Brian's dead," she blurts out, which leads to another round of hysterical crying by both women.

I hold them both as the sun sets, and eventually, they both fall asleep in my arms.

I extricate myself without waking them. Place a pillow from the couch under each of their heads, get a blanket for each of them from the pantry, and cover them both.

Then, I do something I have never done before. I give Teri a comforting kiss on her cheek.

"Thank you, Sam. I know you'll take care of me," Teri murmurs, a smile on her face. I stagger back in shock. I only kissed her because I was sure she was asleep. I have to tell Helen when she wakes. Guilt washes over me, and I am tempted to wake Helen and tell her immediately, but I stop because I don't think she needs any more stress today.

I leave for the kitchen. This afternoon has been a lot. I put on a pot of coffee as it is something I can do without thinking. My emotions are all over the place. Brian is dead from what Helen said, but I have no details. My best friend is dead, shit. I call Ed, who works with Brian and makes up our foursome when we golf.

"Ed, Sam, what's going on?" I ask.

"Jesus, Sam, holy shit, how is Teri," comes pouring out of him when he answers the phone.

"She's not doing good. What happened?" I ask.

"Oh, man, shit, well. There was an explosion in one of the separators in the yard. Brian was up in his office and ran down to see what was going on. He ran right past the Containment Team as they were suiting up and dragged out Pete and Brittney. He was coughing really bad when he came out, so he grabbed an SCBA and ran back into the Control Building. By that time, black smoke is billowing out of the building. He pulled out Don and Hendrix, one in each hand. Then collapsed on the ground. The medics rushed to him, but he was dead when they pulled the mask off of him. He's a fucking hero, man. He saved three lives." Ed finishes. I can hear him whimpering on the other end of the phone.

"Three?" I ask.

"Don didn't make it. He already inhaled too much smoke by the time Brian pulled him out," Ed explains between sobs.

"Ed, thanks. Take care of yourself and call if you need anything," I offer.

"No, Sam, you just lost your best friend. You call me if you need anything," Ed counters.

"I will, Ed. Thanks," I say and hang up.

Well, I have some of the details. I take a deep, calming breath.

I cook an easy dinner of frozen tortellini and sauce for us and check on the women. They are resting calmly on the couch. I return to the kitchen and am at the stove when a set of arms encircle my waist. I love being hugged from behind and having boobs pressed into my back. The hair on my neck rises in excitement. The excitement is replaced by panic when the person belonging to the arms and boobs speaks.

"That smells terrific. Thank you for being so wonderful," Teri whispers into my ear.

"Teri, what the fuck," I say as I spin around to face her. My action causes her to take a step back.

"I just wanted to give you a hug to show you how much I appreciate who you are and what you mean to me," she explains as she tries to hug me again.

"That hug was a bit more intimate than I am comfortable with," I argue.

"I'm sorry, Sam. I just want to let you know how much you mean to me," Teri restates. The look on Teri's face is one of hurt. I feel awful. Helen appears behind her in the doorway and smiles.

"Honey," I say to Helen, looking past Teri. "She hugged me from behind while I was cooking, and we're just sorting that out. Also, while I was tucking her in on the couch, I gave her a comforting kiss on the cheek. I'm sorry, honey." I say, feeling even worse now.

Helen sees and senses my discomfort, smiles at me, and then comes to me to give me a hug.

"It's alright, Sam. You're just being your wonderful self," she says, kissing me.

Surprisingly, she reaches out and pulls Teri towards us and into our hug. With my wife's approval, I feel a deep sense of relief. I wrap an arm around Teri as she begins to sob. You would think both women would be dried out by now, but the tears don't stop. Helen steps back and guides my arms so that I am hugging just Teri, and she is hugging me. Her body melts into mine. This hug is much more intimate than any hug we have ever shared before now. We hold each other for some time while Helen watches us, a smile on her face.

Teri moves in my arms and kisses me on the cheek.

"Thank you, Sam. You are a wonderful man," she says, releasing me.

"Let's eat. This smells wonderful, Sam," Helen compliments me.

We sit down at the dinner table and begin to eat.

"Can you hold my hand, Sam?" Teri asks, holding out her left hand for me to hold. Teri looks so lost and so sad as she looks at me. I immediately look at Helen for help. She simply nods in approval. I tentatively offer my hand to Teri, and she grabs it as if I am pulling her from shark-infested waters. She holds my hand throughout dinner, which is awkward for me because I am right-handed, so eating with my left is a challenge. The hugs, kissing my cheek, the hand-holding, Teri just needs human contact with the loss of Brian. I can understand.

After eating, we all clean the kitchen together and return to the living room. We clean up the used tissues and replace the empty tissue boxes.

I turn on the TV to something mindless on a channel I know will not have any news of Brian and Don's death on it. I go to the fridge to get a bunch of drinks and bring them out for us. The women are sitting on the couch and insist I sit between them. They both snuggle up to me, placing a head on each shoulder.

Maybe half an hour later, I fell asleep. I wake a while later, and both women are sleeping quietly on my shoulders.

"Come on," I wake them. "Let's go to bed."

"Okay," Teri giggles.

"That's not what I meant," I correct her.

Teri responds with an exaggerated pouty face, which causes us all to laugh. It's exactly what we all need after today's events.

Helen leads Teri to the guest room as I get ready for bed. Then joins me in our bathroom.

"Why aren't the phones ringing?" I ask when Helen enters.

"I turned them off so we could have some peace," she answers.

"Good idea," I compliment her.

"Is it alright if Teri sleeps with us?" Helen asks out of the blue.

I spit toothpaste all over the mirror in reply. Helen bursts into laughter.

"Just the kind of response a wife wants. I love you so much," she says. She kisses me on the cheek, then cleans the mirror as I clean myself.

"Teri hasn't slept alone since college, Sam. She and I talked about this, and I'm fine sharing our bed with her. She is my best friend. I know she will never try to steal you from me. I know that Brian made you promise to take care of her, and I have no problem with that," my wife says.

I stand there waiting for her to say more like; April Fools, Ha Ha Prank, or You've Been Punked. Something to let me know she isn't expecting me to physically service Teri in some capacity.

Helen doesn't say anything. She just looks up at me with a hopeful expression, apparently waiting for me to respond.

My brain tosses up a forgotten memory of a promise I made to Brian the evening of his Bachelor Party.

"Does this have to do with some vague promise I made to Brian at his Bachelor's Party?" I ask for clarity.

I think Helen can tell by my words and the expression on my face that something is not how she thinks it should be.

"Oh, shit," Helen states. Shock and surprise on her face let me know we are not working with the same information.

"Yeah, what you're saying and expecting is not what transpired at the end of a drunken party a few years ago," I explain.

"Brian and Teri told me Brian made you promise to take care of Teri should something happen to Brian. You were to fulfill her emotional and physical needs in his absence," Helen explains.

"And you were fine with that?" I exclaim.

"I know how close you and Brian are, or were. Oh my god, this is so real." She steps to me to hug me again for her own comfort. "So anyway, a promise like that really didn't surprise me, but I never thought we would be faced with it, until today. You see how devastated Teri is, so it honestly makes sense now that I see how she is and how she understands things," Helen reasons.
