Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda

Standing in my friends' living room, Kyle and Jennifer, the tension was thick as a San Francisco fog. Knowing Kyle and Jen (that's what she prefers), for as long as I did you would think there'd be no stress or anxiety in our meeting. But there was. In fact, there was a great deal of tension.

You see Kyle and I (I'm Greg) met in our first year at college. I met Sandy, my future wife, and her best friend Jennifer fell in love with Kyle.

Three months ago, we had plans of going on vacation together, my wife Sandy, Kyle, Jen, and two other couples that we hung around. The eight of us had a lot in common, all in our early to mid-thirties, no kids, all career oriented. All four of us husbands loved craft beers, in fact, if one of use found a really good craft beer or a microbrewery that just opened, we'd be on the phone or texting the news to each other.

The wives, well they loved shopping, plain and simple. It was not uncommon for the four wives to plan an all-day Saturday shopping spree while the four husbands golfed in the morning, then went to a new brewery or one we favored and had lunch and talked sports, life in general, sometimes politics.

The two other couples, Ron and Val, Kevin and Sarah, had been our friends for a while. Not as long as Kyle and Jen were, but long enough that we all were comfortable going away on weekends and vacations.

Thus, our planning a nice weeklong vacation to Las Vegas. We planned to golf, see the Grand Canyon, gamble, all the touristy stuff.

Funny how life gets in the way. Several days before leaving, my job required me to fly to Amsterdam. My company writes, programs, manages and maintains computer systems that run power grids. I had to back out of our planned vacation which highly upset my wife. This wasn't the first blow up we had regarding my work, but it paid very well, and my bonuses included stock in the company. Seeing it was a young company, when it finally goes public, my stock could mean an early retirement.

Well Sandy told me in no uncertain terms that she was going with or without me. It was like an ice box in the house while I packed and prepared for my flight to Amsterdam. Sandy wouldn't even let me kiss her as I left.

My trip took a little less than 2 weeks. In that time, I didn't get a response to my text, or my messages left on her cellphone. To say I was a little upset is putting it mildly.

Present day.

Standing in Kyle and Jen's living room, even after they asked me to sit, didn't help the tension in the room.

"I thought you were my friend," addressing Kyle while refusing to look at Jen.

"Why would you ask that question? We've been friends since college."

"Well, let me ask you a question Kyle, how would you feel if I knew Jen was a cheating whore and I never told you?"

Now at this time they both were fidgeting and look uneasy.

"Sandy isn't a cheating whore Greg; I can't believe you'd say that. I can't believe how heartless you were to kick her out of the house." Jen didn't speak these words with much conviction.

"Well, the house was mine prior to our marriage, I have every right to kick a whore out of my house."

Kyle finally attempted to get our discussion back to some normalcy, "Greg, it doesn't do any of us any good, let alone move you and Sandy towards reconciliation, with that kind of language."

"So, you're telling me that you have no prior knowledge that she fucked another man while in Vegas? Is that what you want me to believe Kyle?"

His look showed me that he was conflicted. If he was an ice cube, he would be a puddle of water under my gaze.

"Greg, please, nothing went on in Vegas."

"Liar."

"Greg, I'm your friend."

"A friend doesn't look his friend in the face and lie."

Jen interjected, "you have no proof that she was unfaithful, quit acting like a child and grow up."

"I have all the proof I need; I also have corroborating witness that told me the entire story of how you all planned to keep me in the dark once you got back."

"I also know that she continued the sex all week with the knowledge of all you assholes."

"Greg if you continue with this, I'm going to demand you leave my house."

"I had a feeling you'd take Sandy's side, once I got my evidence, I caught one of the others coming out of their work. I put the pressure on them, and they told me everything." My look of disgust was unnerving to them. But again, they denied everything.

"I'm not taking sides."

"But you haven't told me the truth, and by keeping the truth away from me that is a lie of omission."

Kyle finally looked at Jen with an unfriendly stare. Jen looked at the floor, she couldn't look either of us in the eyes.

"Greg, I'm sorry. We wanted to keep you from the pain, and I should have told you as soon as we got back. Sandy and Jen talked me into keeping this quiet to save you the anguish."

"Kyly shut up." Jen said then looked at me, "you have no proof and if you keep this up Sandy will end up making your life hell."

"Wow you're a real bitch, Jen. Had me fooled for years. You want me to go back to a slut that slept with at least 1 man that I know of as if it didn't happen."

"Like I said, what proof do you have?"

I pulled out a piece of paper. "This is more than enough proof." Proof that you all lied to me. Proof that you're a bitch and my soon to be ex-wife was a slut."

"What is that Greg?" said Kyle trying to see what the words were.

"It's my blood work, I have an STD I got from my wife. If you'd have warned me Kyle that she was unfaithful, I'd not have Herpes. But thanks for that little present."

"OMG, I'm so sorry Greg. I should have said something and could have kept you from getting Herpes"

"Sorry doesn't do it. Shoulda, woulda, coulda." I turned to leave the house and turned my head to them, "You can tell your slut friend that she'll never see me again. Nor will you two. With friends like you, I don't need enemies."

Epilog

I had impressed the officials in Amsterdam and was offered a job. I gladly took it. I resigned my position but kept my stock in the company. Never heard from or talked to Sandy, Kyle or Jen again. I heard the three and a half couples soon fell apart, as the other couples felt uneasy about being bullied into silence. See they never saw me after the return. When I received the bad news from my lab work, I had approached Sarah after work. She immediately started crying and told me everything. I told her about what Sandy's promiscuity had done to me and that I would have to take meds for the rest of my life thanks to Sandy, Kyle and Jen's silence.

Sarah kept me posted, emails are great, with the time difference I can respond at my leisure. Kyle and Jen aren't doing very well, he blames her for losing his best friend.

By his silence he made the decision to take Sandy's side.

Sarah asked me one day when we talked on the phone, why I didn't want closure with Sandy and find out why she did that. I told her I know exactly why, "She was pissed that my work kept me from going, so like an immature child she had a tantrum. Her finding a guy to fuck was her tantrum. She never thought that it would come back to bite her in the ass."

I found a gorgeous woman here, she knows about my problem. Through medicine, and condoms we have an active love life, but because of the selfishness of Sandy, I will never know what it feels like to be bareback with her as I won't give her Herpes. She has 2 children and I've pretty much adopted them. Life goes on. Life finds a way.

The end.
