Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda
Standing in my friends' living room, Kyle and Jennifer, the tension was thick as a San Francisco fog. Knowing Kyle and Jen (that's what she prefers), for as long as I did you would think there'd be no stress or anxiety in our meeting. But there was. In fact, there was a great deal of tension.
You see Kyle and I (I'm Greg) met in our first year at college. I met Sandy, my future wife, and her best friend Jennifer fell in love with Kyle.
Three months ago, we had plans of going on vacation together, my wife Sandy, Kyle, Jen, and two other couples that we hung around. The eight of us had a lot in common, all in our early to mid-thirties, no kids, all career oriented. All four of us husbands loved craft beers, in fact, if one of use found a really good craft beer or a microbrewery that just opened, we'd be on the phone or texting the news to each other.
The wives, well they loved shopping, plain and simple. It was not uncommon for the four wives to plan an all-day Saturday shopping spree while the four husbands golfed in the morning, then went to a new brewery or one we favored and had lunch and talked sports, life in general, sometimes politics.
The two other couples, Ron and Val, Kevin and Sarah, had been our friends for a while. Not as long as Kyle and Jen were, but long enough that we all were comfortable going away on weekends and vacations.
Thus, our planning a nice weeklong vacation to Las Vegas. We planned to golf, see the Grand Canyon, gamble, all the touristy stuff.
Funny how life gets in the way. Several days before leaving, my job required me to fly to Amsterdam. My company writes, programs, manages and maintains computer systems that run power grids. I had to back out of our planned vacation which highly upset my wife. This wasn't the first blow up we had regarding my work, but it paid very well, and my bonuses included stock in the company. Seeing it was a young company, when it finally goes public, my stock could mean an early retirement.
Well Sandy told me in no uncertain terms that she was going with or without me. It was like an ice box in the house while I packed and prepared for my flight to Amsterdam. Sandy wouldn't even let me kiss her as I left.
My trip took a little less than 2 weeks. In that time, I didn't get a response to my text, or my messages left on her cellphone. To say I was a little upset is putting it mildly.
Present day.
Standing in Kyle and Jen's living room, even after they asked me to sit, didn't help the tension in the room.
"I thought you were my friend," addressing Kyle while refusing to look at Jen.
"Why would you ask that question? We've been friends since college."
