"
Handyman wanted. Carpentry, painting, light landscaping, light plumbing. Pay commensurate with experience. Special benefits for right candidate.
"
Beth spread the classified ads section of the local newspaper out on the kitchen table. She points to the listing for David's benefit. They live in a rural town, and the small newspaper is still the go-to for things like that.
"
Shit!
" he protests. "
Your
phone number!"
"Damn straight it is, David! There are only 24 hours in a day, and you are not keeping up with
anything!
"
He moans, "Like stuff at the guesthouse so we can sell it."
"Yeah. Kitchen has no sink, and the garage door? You haven't touched it in months! Same goes for here!"
"So what's your plan? 'Special benefits', however?"
"You know what I mean. I warned you that was a possibility. Help like this is impossible to find and hard to keep around here."
Dave sighs, stares at the floor, and shakes his head.

Bethany's cellphone rings. She runs across the living room to catch it.
"Hello?"
...
"Yes, still looking for someone."
...
"Lots of small projects."
...
"That? Bonus for completed tasks."
