After leaving my ex-home and soon-to-be-ex-wife, I went to a cheap hotel.
That next day was Saturday, my soon-to-be ex was supposedly off with Shithead, I came back to the house to get some more of my stuff. But, her car was still in the driveway. I went to the door, rang the bell, then opened the door and called out, "it's me."
Judy was just walking to the door.
"So, you've come to your senses?"
"No. I thought you'd be off with the Shithead Jason and now would be a good time to pick up a load of my stuff."
"Yeah, well, no babysitter, no tryst. Happy?"
"Not really. Your mom wouldn't help?"
"No, didn't want to have to answer too many of her questions."
"Well, word is out, your mom won't be protected for long."
"What? How did that happen? Have you been telling our friends?"
"No, didn't have to. It's your boyfriend. Shithead has been bragging about it to your office workers, and a few of my friends have picked up on it and been telling me about it."
"You don't have to leave. The plan was to come back to you. Nothing was going to change. I still love you."
"I love you, too, unfortunately. Which is why it hurts so much. But I can't trust you anymore. And while I don't wish you any unhappiness, I can't be with you either, knowing that my future will involve me worrying about you coming home diseased ridden or pregnant or doped up by some new, exciting boyfriend."
I paused then continued, "besides, things had already changed. You had already turned cold and withdrawn from me. It's clear to me that after Shithead, you would line up yet another Shithead, then another, then another. It's not a parade I intend to stay and watch."
"Damn it, it's not like that. It was a one-time thing, just a little fun, nothing more. And I had no plans to do it again."
