As usual comments and ratings are appreciated and welcome. But remember it's only a story not real life!
Lydia was a 50-year woman, married to William 5 years older, for the last 30 years. They had four kids, 2 of each, the girls 30 and 21, the boys 25 and 10. As you can no doubt deduce from this, she married young at 20 years of age, pregnant at the time. William had been her high school sweetheart, her only lover. They had been together since she was just 17.
She had a very happy contented life. William had a good job, as a logistics manager in a local firm. They lived a good life, not wealthy but comfortable enough to put the kids through college and have a good annual holiday. She had not worked since she had married. She was a content housewife looking after the house and her kids, the last of which had been a big surprise. She did not have any real close friends. Occasionally she met three other nearby housewives for a coffee morning. She looked forward to their first grandchild as her eldest married daughter was six months pregnant.
Her social outings were limited to a few occasions annually when she accompanied William to work events. She enjoyed these outings, proud to be on his arm, proud of his career, given his low level of education. He had joined the company as a store man and had worked hard through various promotions to his current managerial role.
She had always been embarrassed when he told her how lucky all the guys thought he was, to be married to such a sexy woman. She never considered herself sexy though she had always ensured that she looked after herself. She wanted to look good for her husband.
She did not look her 50 years, probably about 5 years younger. At a height of 5'7, she had retained her body shape, with very little excess bits and pieces, and large breasts. She had long black hair, though not as dark as it had been in earlier life. The one thing she had never liked about her body was her 34DD breasts. She had always wished for smaller ones as she was conscious that men would often stare at them.
Their content comfortable married life was shattered the day she received a phone call from her husband's boss to tell her that he had been hurt in a car accident on his way to work. He had been taken to hospital. She rushed to the hospital to see him, to discover he had broken many bones and damaged his back. The good news was that he would recover but it would take a lot of time.
For the next three months she visited him in the hospital each day. Prior to the accident she had never worried about monetary matters. That had always been left in his hands. She knew that they had some savings and assumed that the company would continue to pay him while he was out of work.
On her next visit William asked for the kids to leave but for her to stay. He told them that he needed to discuss something in private with her. She sat there stunned as he told her that the company would only pay him full pay for another month and that they would then put him on half pay for the next six months.
Stunned, she looked at him, "And after that?"
"If I am not back at work by then, they will cease to pay me."
She looked at him with concerned eyes, "How can that be? You have worked there all your life."
"Love, it's not a large company. They can't afford to keep paying someone who is not contributing."
Feeling as if she wanted to cry, "This can't be happening. What are we going to do? The Doctors are saying it could be another twelve months before you can even contemplate working."
"Love, we'll work something out. We still have some savings."
She was getting angry at his apparent lack of concern, "The savings won't last too long. We still have the mortgage, college fees and other normal living expenses."
"I know Love. Maybe Gillian can take a break from college. She could get a job for a while and go back later when we get back on track."
She stared at him, "No. I can't believe we'd have to ask her to do that. Anyhow there are not exactly lots of jobs around here."
"Let's think about it Love. I will talk to James and see if maybe he could give her a job."
James was his boss, a man in his early 30's, who William had never really liked. James had taken over the company only a year ago from his father who had been a really nice man. He had retired due to poor health, leaving his son in charge of the company.
In total shock, she gave him a kiss on the cheek, telling him that she loved him. She left the hospital, trying not to look upset as her daughter and son were waiting in the lobby. After arriving home she prepared dinner as usual which they ate, as usual, at the kitchen table together. She listened as Gillian talked about her day at college. It was obvious how much she loved it, with only two years more to complete her degree course in Business Studies. Her two older siblings had both gone to college and were now working in reasonable jobs. She had always thought Gillian to be the most intelligent of all her kids, having always achieved the best grades. William and Lydia had always hoped that Gillian would be the child to get on best in life. It broke Lydia's heart, listening to her chat about her day, to consider having to ask her to give it up, even temporarily.
The following day, during her daily visit to the hospital, she saw James in her husband's room.
"Oh hi Lydia. I was just seeing how William was. He seems to be looking better. Don't you think?"
"Yes James, he's getting there but its slow progress unfortunately."
She looked over at her Husband, lying on his bed. Sitting upright for any long period was still difficult for him.
"I was asking James about a job for Gillian. He says that he may have a job coming up. His Dad's secretary, you remember Emily, is retiring soon. James says he will consider Gillian for the job if that is what we want."
She looked up at James, who she caught staring at her breasts, though fully covered under her dress. He took his time looking away, "Lydia, if you want to discuss the job for her, give me a call."
"Thanks James. We still must decide what's best."
James smiled at her, "When you have decided, get in touch. I'll be off now, William. Keep up the good work and get better. I'll call again soon."
"Thanks Boss, hope I can speed it up."
After James had left, they discussed their financial issues and potential solutions. It was unlikely that any bank would give them a loan and none of their children had any savings.
Lydia looked at her husband, "Maybe I should get a job."
"You've never had a job Love. What could you do?"
Staring at him she replied, "I'm sure there are some jobs I could do. I could be a cleaner or something."
"Love, there are very few jobs out there and employers tend to go to younger kids with qualifications. Even the manual labour jobs are like that these days."
She didn't like his responses, "Thanks for your confidence in me. I'm just an old married housewife, is that what you're saying?"
"Love, please, you know I'm not saying that. It's just the realities of the times we live in. There are not too many opportunities for mature people."
Shortly afterwards, she left, upset at their chat, but knowing what he had said was probably true. Who would recruit an old married mother of four with no work experience?
That night she lay in bed watching the muted TV while talking to her husband on the phone. As she talked to him about his doctor's visit after she had left him, she watched a sex scene on the TV. The scene involved a young married couple, and appeared to have so much passion, even without sound.
William detected her lack of attention, and he asked what she was doing. When she told him he laughed, "Sorry Love. I guess that's something else you're losing out on while I'm in here."
She laughed with him, "Don't be stupid, it's not as if we exactly do it so regularly anymore."
"Are you complaining Love?"
She laughed again, "Of course not. We're not youngsters anymore."
"We're not invalids either yet Love. I look forward to playing with your puppies when I get out."
