This is a flash story of 1191 words in length. I'd like to thank Randi for her editorial advice and I'd like to thank my beta readers for their support. I wasn't sure where to place this story, but as Carl and Anne are very much in love and Anne is a loving wife in the very best meaning of those words, I decided to place it in Loving Wives. It's just a story, folks. I hope you enjoy it.
Dr. Carl Myers was the Science Advisor to the President. He had multiple degrees, a couple of Doctorates but even he was stumped, baffled and bewildered by current events.
"Carl," President Peterson said, "can you please explain to me what the hell is going on?"
Carl shook his head. "Not really, Mr. President, because nobody in the entire world's scientific community has ever seen anything like this. Throughout observable space there have been previously unknown phenomena of multiple sources and multiple types. Also, the whole of space surrounding our star system has started to glow, for want of a better term."
"Is it dangerous, this radiation, if that's what it is?"
"We don't believe so, at least not yet. It's weird but the glow doesn't appear to have any dangerous types or levels of radiation. It's like a sort of a cold light, if you will.
"But it's not the glow that concerns me, Mr. President. There appears to be some sort of shift in time and reality, for want of a better expression.
"Also, there's a major increase in dark radiation, plus someone in Australia has stated that their tachyon particle detector has started to produce some very worrying results."
"I thought tachyons didn't really exist outside of theoretical physics?"
"Well, that was the generally held consensus, but the guys at a cutting edge research facility in New South Wales postulated several years ago, a mechanism whereby they could, under some circumstances, be detected. Now, they are concerned about the amount that they are detecting."
"Is that connected to the weird glow in space and the other events you mentioned?"
"Mr. President, your guess is as good as that of anyone. The truth is, although it seems likely, we have yet to find any definitive proof one way or another."
Carl paused before continuing. "Also, there's something slightly more sinister, slightly more concerning, potentially. The Annie Maunder Astrographic Telescope at the Royal Observatory in the UK and the UK's Jodrell Bank radio telescope have detected images and radiation from a point about a light year away from the Solar System that looks to have all the hallmarks of being from a black hole."
"My God!" said President Peterson. "Good Lord above, that's dreadful! Are we heading toward it?"
"In truth, Mr. President, if the Brit's figures are correct, it seems more probable that it is heading toward us. And at an increasing speed, I have to say."
"Does that mean the world is doomed?"
"As there is no data or firm theories on how to stop a black hole, then I think that is the highly likely outcome, Sir."
Carl said his goodbyes and returned to his home on the college campus where his wife and co-researcher, Anne, was awaiting him.
"How did the President take it, Carl?"
"He took it as well as you would expect. I'm glad I'm not in his position. He'll have to decide whether or not he should keep these facts secret or whether he should tell the public and the world. Of course, with so many scientists the world over knowing parts of this puzzling situation there stands a damn good chance that someone will let something slip which could cause a worldwide panic, which would not be good."
