I haven't written a story for a long time, and most of this was written during a hospital stay. It is very different from my usual erotic love stories with a happy ending. I have been reading lots of Loving Wives stories, so I thought I would have another try. I also wanted to try writing from a male point of view.

***********************************************************************************************************

I was surprised when Barney, someone I knew from university, called me to say he was working in my hometown on a temporary project and asked me to meet for a drink.

I was amazed when he casually informed me that he had been fucking my wife for the last fortnight.

"You've got until I finish my pint to run as fast and as far as you can, but make no mistake; I will catch you, and you won't like what will happen when I do."

Barney gulped but didn't move; I will give him that.

"I'm here to apologise; I didn't know she was your wife. I'd never do that to you willingly. To an old pal. She told me she was divorced and looking for some fun."

Old pal? The truth was that Barney wasn't really my pal, even before this revelation. We were all flatmates in the first year of university, so we were forced to get along. I was doing IT; he was the scientist doing Chemistry, and the rest of the lads were doing English. He was always hanging around in our group after that first year but on the periphery. He was OK, but there was always something a bit intense about him that I didn't like. He stared a bit too much, for too long at times, and it unsettled me.

We hung around together; we'd even all gone on a lad's holiday together to celebrate the end of Uni, and I'd drawn the short straw and had to share a room with Barney. I don't remember much about that holiday other than I had the worst hangover ever and had to stay in bed for a couple of days to recover.

The silence at the table was palpable. I gripped my glass tighter, and Barney got paler by the second, but he didn't move.

"I don't believe you. Stephanie would never do that to me, especially with you. She's been nothing but loyal since the day we got married."

"Yes, thanks for the invite, by the way."

"I only invited my friends."

"All the gang except for me."

"So, that's it, is it? You've made up these lies about my wife in a fit of anger because you're still mad I didn't invite you to the wedding six years ago. I haven't seen you in ten years, you sad bastard."

"Well, maybe this wouldn't have happened if you had invited me. I would have recognised her."

With that, he passed over his phone and showed me a nude of Stephanie. She was posing for the camera in lingerie I didn't recognise. She was smiling broadly for the camera. He flicked through the pictures to show me pictures of them together, her smiling eyes wide for the camera. In the final image he showed me, she had her legs wide for the camera, his head between them as she flung her head back in ecstasy. We had always had a good sex life; I had never left her wanting or she me. That's why I found this so hard to believe; I loved her so much. She was my everything, and I knew I was hers. No, I believed in Stephanie; I believed in us too much to fall for this trick.

"Well done, Barney. You almost had me fooled. Very impressive deep fakes, I'll give you that, but I still don't believe you. I know Stephanie, and I trust her. I know she wouldn't do this."

"OK, I'll prove it to you. Tell her you're working late. I know you must work late sometimes; otherwise, Steph wouldn't be free to see me."

I winced as he called her Steph. She hated it whenever anyone didn't use her full name. I tried it once, and I never made that mistake again.

I should have punched him when I could, but I decided to do as he asked. If only to shut him up long enough for me to kill him.

After I'd spoken to Stephanie, Barney picked up his phone and said,

"Hi, Steph. When can I see you again? Tonight, I'll be there in 15 minutes. Don't forget to give Humphrey one of those tablets I gave you in some cheese. You know how he hates me. If you give it to him now, he'll be asleep when I arrive."

"You better be lying, you bastard. If you've touched Stephanie or drugged my dog, you'll wish you'd never been born."

"I didn't know, did I? That's the point. I'm just trying to prove what Stephanie is like because you won't believe me. I'm sorry. I had no idea she was anyone's wife, least of all yours. I'm sorry, mate, but you deserve better. As for the dog, Humphrey will be fine. He hasn't taken to me for some reason, and he does nothing but bark and growl whenever he sees me."

"Well, at least he has some loyalty to me, unlike some."

"That pill won't harm him; it just gives a peaceful nap. Starting to believe me now?" Barney said as he sipped his drink. "Give me 15 minutes, and then come home. I'll make sure that we haven't gone too far. I couldn't do that to you now that I know the truth. I'm just trying to save you from that lying cow."

"How noble of you," I growled.

He left quickly then, and I sat there stunned. Surely, he must be lying. Then it hit me; maybe this was all part of some elaborate prank the lads had set up. They got Barney in on it, and he was so desperate to be back in the gang after all these years he'd agree to anything. That must be it; It wouldn't surprise me that they would all jump out when I got home. That's why Barney said he wouldn't go too far tonight, because he couldn't, as Stephanie wouldn't agree to go too far just for a prank. Those bastards almost got me convinced.

Feeling happier, I finished my pint and started to walk home. I crept in the back door, expecting people to jump out to greet me. Humphrey was suspiciously quiet in his basket. I started to feel a bit worried again. I walked into the hallway; I could hear music playing but no other noise. I walked into the living room, and there in front of the fireplace with his trousers around his ankles was Barney. He was on the receiving end of one of Stephanie's blow jobs. She had swallowed his short cock down to the root, something she could never manage with my longer cock. As her nose settled in his pubes, she pulled back, licked the tip, and as she was about to descend again, she was distracted by the sound of the crinoline lady she had inherited from her grandma smashing the mirror over the fireplace.

In her shock, she bit down on Barney's cock as they were both showered with the glass of the mirror and shards of old lady ornament. Sadly, she had not bitten it off, but enough to make Barney scream almost as loudly as her.

I stood watching all this play out; my legs didn't seem to be able to move. Barney doubled up, and Stephanie brushed off shards of glass as she stared at me in shock.

"It's not what it looks like," she shouted.

"Stephanie, is that the best you can do? Have you got any explanation for why you were deep-throating my old friend Barney's cock. Well, not exactly deep-throating it for obvious reasons," I spat at Barney.

With that, I turned and scooped up Humphrey, dog bed and all. I was taking him to the emergency vet; he was the only one that mattered now.

The vet was excellent, and there was no waiting time at that late hour. Of course, we didn't know precisely what he had been given, but he appeared OK apart from being in a deep sleep. We agreed that he should stay at the vet's overnight as a precautionary measure so that they could keep an eye on him and ensure that there were no long-lasting effects when he awoke--poor little chap.

I stormed home to find Stephanie sitting in the kitchen alone.

"Your boyfriend gone, has he? It's a pity he should have taken you with him as you are certainly no use to me anymore. Now fuck off out of my sight."

"Where's Humphrey?" she gulped.

"Thanks to you, I've had to leave him at the vets. They are keeping him in for observation. If he's hurt in any way, you would like my reaction. It will be far worse than the divorce, believe me."

"Divorce? I don't want a divorce; we can get past this. It was just a mistake. We can get past this."

"No, we really can't. I don't give second chances, even to you."

With that, I packed a case.

"Where are you going," Stephanie cried; you haven't even let me explain.

"What explanation could there be, Stephanie? Should I call you Steph like all your boyfriends?"

"I don't have boyfriends. He's not my boyfriend. If you'd just let me explain, you owe me that."

"I owe you nothing. I'm going to a hotel for the night. You better be at your mother's when I come home from work tomorrow. Unless you plan on moving in with Barney."

I slammed the door so hard it rattled in its frame. As I stormed towards my car, Barney appeared.

"Where are you going?"

"Hotel for the night whilst the bitch moves out. You can have her if you want, as she's no use to me."

"I don't want her. That's not what this is about. I just wanted you to believe me about what she's like. Don't go to a hotel. Come and stay with me. This is all my fault. Let me make it up to you. I was just trying to protect my friend."

"Friend," I laughed, "That's a laugh; it didn't stop you from getting a blowjob once you knew, did it?"

"Well, she was quite insistent, and it was the best way to prove it to you. Nothing else seemed to work."

"Well, I'm glad that worked for you. I know what would work for me at the moment, too."

I put my bag in the back of the car, and I hit him as hard as I could. It was a long time since I'd hit anyone. I forgot how much it hurt, but it was worth the pain as he went down after one punch. He was lucky I didn't drive over him, too, the slimy bastard.

"That was for Humphrey. Wait till you see what happens to you for ruining my marriage and my life."

I left him there in the drive. As I pulled out of our garage, I saw Stephanie in the rear view mirror. I expected her to rush out to Barney, but she closed the curtains.

I spoke to the vet first thing that morning and was allowed to pick him up that lunchtime with no ill effects. I took him back to work, and he settled under my desk. Sometimes, being the boss was good, but sometimes, I did have to work into the night. Is that why Stephanie had succumbed to Barney? Had I neglected her? She knew I was building the business for our future. The truth was we spent lots of time together. Quality time. That's why I was so shocked. That's why I had lain awake in the hotel last night, broken-hearted.

That night, when Humphrey and I returned home. Stephanie wasn't there. She'd left a brief note,

"I'm at Mum's when you are ready to talk."

I screwed it up and put it in the bin; she'd have a long wait for that conversation.

Embarrassed by the situation, I knew I needed my friends. I called Oliver and told him what had happened. He was the last of us to get married to his husband, Connor. He promised to spread the word. I think he was almost as shocked as I was.

"Bloody Barney? What was she thinking of?"

Later, after I had downed a few whiskies. The rest of the gang started to ring or send me messages.

I had an interesting conversation with Callum. He lived the closest; we often met up with him and his wife Laura as a foursome.

"Look, I know it won't make any difference to you, but I think that you should talk to Stephanie. She's been talking to Laura. I don't know what was said, but Laura says there is much more to the story. She also said that Stephanie might be the most stupid woman ever to walk this earth. She is livid with her on your behalf, but she said there is more to it than first appears. All she will say to me is that it wasn't an affair. Whatever that means. I'm not happy she would say more, but she says you need to hear it yourself first."

We were interrupted by a knock at the door. I couldn't believe it when I saw Barney outside with two black eyes and an obviously broken nose.

"I just wanted to say that I haven't told the police that you did this to me. I understand you were upset and why you blamed me so that I won't be saying anything. I still want us to be friends. I know we lost touch, but we were fond of each other once."

"Are you for real? I could never be friends with you after what you've done. You sicken me. I'll never get that image of you two out of my mind. Now do one before I find another part of your body to break."

He flinched and stepped back then, but he didn't move away.

"I'll give you some time, but I want you to know that I am here for you when you've calmed down. I will always be your friend. I will always care for you."

As I closed the door, I was seriously beginning to think that he had some mental issues.

As the week went on with no word from Stephanie, I went to see the solicitor to see what divorce would look like. It wasn't great, but I could afford it. Thankfully, my business wouldn't be affected as it would remain solely mine due to how it was set up. Stephanie would, however, be getting a lot of the profits as alimony unless I could prove that she earned more than me. I won't be doing any extra work from now on. What would be the point?

My mother-in-law, Maureen, rang me on Friday night. I had always got on with her and called her Mum, particularly as my own parents had long since gone. They weren't dead, but they might as well be. They lived in Spain. They were far too busy living the high life to think about their only son. I had always been particularly fond of her.

"Hello love, I've been worrying about you. Stephanie said I had to leave you in peace, but I haven't been able to stop worrying about you. Are you eating? You're not drinking too much, are you? Do you need me to come round? I could make you my lasagne. I know you've always loved that."

The simple kindness, love, and care she was inadvertently showing me was too much to bear, and I just broke down in tears.

"Oh, My poor sweetheart, I'm on my way now."

When she arrived, she just let herself in with her spare key. I never got around to changing the locks.

I soon found myself enveloped in her arms, and I let her rock me and soothe me like I was a little kid who had fallen off my bike and grazed my knee.

"That stupid girl of mine has done this to you. I've always loved you like my own, and I could swing for her; I really could."

"How could she be so cruel?" I asked. I thought she loved me as much as I loved her. I thought we would be having children soon."

"I know you did, sweetheart, and she does love you very much. She wouldn't have spent all week at mine wailing if she didn't. As for being cruel. She really wasn't. She was being stupid, but she was being cruel."

"How can you say that? Laura said something similar to Callum."

"Because she's only told Laura and me the truth, what happened and why she did what she did. That's why. I'm not defending her, and she knows it -- she's a bloody fool, but I know she loves you and only you. It would be best if you spoke to her and soon. She needs to tell you herself."

With that, she warmed up the lasagne and made me drink lots of water.

"No more booze for you until all this is sorted."

"That's a long time not to drink until the divorce is final," I mumbled.

"Let's not be too hasty. It might not come to that," Maureen said quietly. "But if it does, you won't be divorcing me. I'll still be here for you; I'll still be your extra Mum. I'll tell Stephanie you'll be ready to talk to her at ten in the morning, then."

She left quickly before I could argue.

I slept better than I had for the past few days, but I was still up very early, pacing the house until the confrontation I had been dreading but knew would have to happen.

My heart caught in my throat when I saw Stephanie. She looked even worse than me. Her hair was lacklustre, and her face was drawn, even though she had obviously made an effort with her makeup.

"I'm so sorry, so very sorry. Please just let me speak to you. Tell you what happened, and then I'll go. You don't even have to say anything. I'm not expecting anything, but you need to know the truth."

I nodded; I didn't have anything to say at this point. The floor was very definitely hers.

"I met Barney a month ago when he came into the car dealership. He started chatting to me and then noticed the name. He asked if I was your wife, and I told him I was. He got pretty upset, telling me how close he had been to the gang and how you had just cut him off. He never knew why. He told me how much he missed everyone but especially you. He spoke in such glowing terms of you. I felt quite sorry for him; you had obviously been far more important to him than he had ever been to you. You mentioned him a few times, and I'd seen the photos, but I felt sorry for him. It was almost the end of the day; you'd already told me you would be working late, so when he suggested a quick drink, what was the harm? I was just having a quick drink before home with an old friend of yours. I even thought he might tell me some of your old secrets I could tease you with.

Anyway, he was good company but a little weird. He stares a lot, doesn't he? I didn't like that, but he was nice enough. I only had one drink, and that's all I remember about the first time. I woke up in his bed at the hotel, and it was obvious what we had done. I was trying to get up, to get to the police, to get tested so they could prove that he had doped me, but then he came back into the room smiling.

'I think you enjoyed that, listen to this' -- he played me the soundtrack from the video he'd recorded, and I did sound like I was enjoying it. I was begging for more, for him to do it harder, faster, deeper. It was awful; who would believe me now? How would you believe me? I knew a predator had trapped me."

"You could have told me; I would have gone with you to the police."

"I know, but you would never have looked at me in the same way. There would always have been some doubt. Hell, I was even doubting myself at this point. I could have still gone to the police, though at that point, I knew I had a chance whilst there were still drugs in my system, but then he played his trump card."

"And that was?"

"He hadn't just done it to me. He'd done it to you, too."

"Well, of course, he had; if he's hurt you, he's hurt me."

"No, please let me explain: when you were on your lad's holiday. He'd done the same to you. He'd drugged you, slept with you, videoed you and taken pictures. He showed them to me. Remember, you said that you had the worst hangover you'd ever experienced on that holiday. He'd obviously not refined the cocktail of drugs he used on me at that point. You didn't look like you were enjoying it. You looked like a zombie, but you were certainly joining in."

At this point, I ran to the sink and met my breakfast again. I didn't shrug her off when she stroked my back.

"And you've seen this."

"Yes, and I knew that you didn't know. I didn't want you to know about any of it--about him, with both of us."

"So, he really fucked us both, didn't he?"

"When he said that you would never know if I saw him a few more times whilst he was here, it seemed a small price to pay for your peace of mind. He's already done things to me, to us, and that would haunt me, but I could still protect you; he promised me that you would never know, and he would give me all the videos and photos."

"And you trusted him?"

"Of course not, but I didn't have a lot of choices, did I?"

"You did; you did have choices. I would have rather known than for you to do what you did, to see you doing that to him."

"I didn't think that he would tell you, though. I believed that. He seemed strangely obsessed with you and just wanted to be your friend."

"So my friend rapes me, and then a decade later rapes my wife. How many times?"
