February Sucks is a project that really sucked me into writing here. All the alternate endings, all the different reactions, they say so many things about the writers.

I actually have a couple of different directions that I considered going with this. We'll see if I follow through with any of the others.

The main points that I wanted to hit were Linda's choice and what it meant about her faithfulness, and what it meant about how she looked at Jim.

I think that I got it pretty well. You guys please let me know.

The front door creaked open. Jim didn't turn around, his hands gripping the edge of the kitchen counter as if that was all that kept him standing upright. He could hear the faint rustling of her coat, the soft click of her boots upon tile. He had been waiting all night for just this very moment. His body screamed with exhaustion, but his anger wouldn't let him rest. Not yet.

"Jim?" Her voice was cautious, tentative. "I'm back."

No apology. No explanation. Just that casual tone of a person who thought they could step out of their life for a night, indulge in whatever fantasies they desired and come back as if nothing had changed. As if she hadn't destroyed something precious.

He didn't turn. He could hear her setting down her purse, the faint jingle of keys. She was acting like nothing had happened, like she hadn't spent the night in another man's arms, like their love wasn't obliterated.

"Jim?" she repeated, her tone a little softer, a little more probing now. "I... are you okay?

That was it. The breaking point.

He turned then, slowly, deliberately. His eyes locked to hers and she froze in place, the smile she'd tried to force, faltering.

"Am I okay?" His voice low, barely contained, bubbling over with the simmering anger. "You want to know if I'm okay?

Linda's face flickered, and uncertainty crossed it. She took a step toward him, reaching out. He stepped back, dodging her hand like it was poison.

"Jim, I know that last night was... Unexpected. But it was just one night. It didn't mean anything..."

"Didn't mean anything?" The words exploded with a harsh, disbelieving laugh. "You left with another man, Linda. You fucked him, and you have the nerve to stand here and tell me it didn't mean anything?"

She opened her mouth to reply, but he was far from done. His voice lowered, dripping with malice. "You left me sitting at that table, waiting for you to come back, and instead you slunk away like I didn't exist. Like I didn't matter at all "

Tears brimmed in her eyes, but he was beyond caring.

"It was just one night, Jim," she whispered as if that would somehow make it all right. "I came back, didn't I?"

"You came back?" he spat, incredulous. "That's your defense? You 'came back'? After what you did? After you chose to leave me? I should be grateful you decided to waltz in here at noon after a night fucking him?"

Linda flinched. She sought for a hint of forgiveness in his eyes. There was none.

"I thought...," she began, swallowing hard. "I thought we were stronger than this, that we could move past one night. I made a mistake."

"A Mistake?" His eyes blazed. "You call what you did a mistake? That wasn't a mistake, Linda. It was a choice. A deliberate, selfish choice. You knew what you were doing when you left with him."

Tears finally spilled down her cheeks. "But I love you, Jim. I love us. You have to know that. This, this didn't change anything."

"It changed everything," he roared back, emotion now thick in his voice. "You think you can just say the words 'I love you' and it'll erase what you did? That it'll erase the fact that you chose him over me? That you destroyed everything we built for one night?"

She took another step closer, but a look stopped her. "Don't. Don't even think about coming closer."

He had loved her so much, had done everything for her, their family. From working late, sacrificing, putting his own needs aside, he had done it all for her. And this was the thanks he got.

"I thought." His voice broke, but he pushed the words out. "I thought we were unbreakable. I thought that you would always be faithful. But you'll never be able to say that again, will you?"

The truth of it hit her like a blow. She stepped back, her shoulders sagging, and she wiped at her eyes.

"I can't forgive this, Linda," he said quietly; the anger drained away. "I can't pretend this didn't happen."

"Jim, please!"

"You made your choice," he interrupted, his voice steady, resolute. "Now I'm making mine."

Her breath hitched. "What does that mean?"

He stared at her, "It means that we are no longer married."

She collapsed in sobs. He just turned away and walked out of the kitchen, leaving her standing alone.
