Destroyed

It had been a busy five days, and a lot of miles driven. Twenty minutes after getting home I was sat on my deck in my favourite chair with a cup of dark nectar, while I contemplated what the Twins were doing with their first days of freedom. Miranda and I had just done the journey that made us empty nesters, the same journey that thousands of other parents were doing or had done in the last few days. I could guarantee that the rest of them couldn't feel as good as I did at that moment.

With Luke going to Georgia Tech, Atlanta had been our first destination. We were able to drop of the rental there as well meaning we weren't on a tandem drive any longer. Our daughter Kelly was delivered to Gainesville to become a Gator the following day while her parents travelled a few miles further east to Daytona Beach for a few days R&R. The following three days were filled with more sex than we had done at any point in our marriage up to then, Miranda had been insatiable. Having the kids when were only Eighteen meant we were only Thirty-six and our energy levels were still high. Lordy, Miranda had even blown me twice on our drive home as well as a quick stop in a deserted area of a truck stop were she proved she had forgotten to put on any underwear. I could honestly say that I had been drained of any bodily fluid.

While I was sat with my pleasant memories, Miranda had gone up to shower and freshen up. I was surprised when I heard blow dryer start, which only usually happened when she was getting ready for work or if she was getting ready to go out. A few minutes later I could hear her shoes pottering around in the kitchen another unusual sound as she would normally be in her rubber soled indoor shoes or bare feet. Before I could contemplate further on that point she called out to me.

"Alan, sweetie, can you come and sit with me for a minute. I need to have a quick chat with you."

Rising from my chair and carrying my empty mug I responded, "On my way darling."

Entering the kitchen I was shocked to see my wife sat at the table dressed in a fresh blouse and clean jeans looking as good as she'd always did. She had poured me a fresh mug of coffee and placed it across from where she was sat. I was puzzled as to what was going on so I sat in the chair she obviously wanted me to be sat at.

"What's going on Miri?" I asked taking a sip of the fresh brew.

"I'm leaving you Alan!" she answered in calm voice picking up a large manila envelope. "These are the divorce papers for you to get looked at and signed." She was talking but I had gone into shock, I was numb, I couldn't form any words. This had come out of nowhere! Miri carried on regardless, "It is all explained in the documentation. I'm not looking for anything from you. Anything I have left in the house is for you to do with as you please. All the savings and accounts have been split or paid up to date and I have cut up all the joint credit cards. I have notified anyone that needs it of my change of address. Anything else you can pass through my solicitor's. I have also put a restraining order in place as I want no further contact with you after I leave. I have a new number and email and all my old accounts have been closed. Please don't cause any problems with the kids by trying to get information from them as they are aware of what's happening and won't help you. The same goes for my parents. I know you are going to ask so I might as well tell you, I have been in a relationship with Dan for the last thirteen years so I'm hoping to make my work husband my real husband. I do love you Alan, it's just that I love Dan more. He has been patient long enough and deserves more commitment from me so this is it." Miranda had finished and was leaving the table walking towards the door picking up a small carry case that she had put by the door.

As she opened the front door I finally found my voice, "Why?"

Showing no emotion at all she looked me straight in the eye and said "Sandy Thompson." With that she closed the door behind her.

That was the last time I saw or spoke to Miranda for sixteen months.

Work Dad was Dan Roberts, someone I had considered a friend for the last eighteen years. Miri and Dan's wife, Laura, became close while going through pregnancy. Kindred spirits as they were close in age, Laura being twenty-two to Miri being eighteen. Their daughter Cassie was born the day after the twins meaning the two wives had adjourning beds. That initial friendship became such a closeness that they were inseparable which of course meant us husbands were pulled together. The two family's closeness soon looked like one family as each weekend we were at each other's houses, only living two blocks from each other was pretty convenient.

Before our "oops" moment that brought the twins into the world, Both Miri and I were college bound. Miri always wanted to study Business or Business Management whereas I had a partial Baseball scholarship with a Maths major but with no real direction. That all changed when the Miri told me she was pregnant and I dumped all my hopes and dreams to get a job. Our Parents were brilliant to both of us, a wedding was booked and arranged within two months. My parents had me very late in there thirties, thinking that they were always going to be childless, and gave me all the Love and support that a child could have. Miri had an older brother, ten years older, meaning that she really didn't have much of a sibling relationship. Tom had left for college before she turned eight and except a couple of flying visits never really returned. Unfortunately he died in an automobile accident a year after leaving college. This caused her parents to give her the same focus mine gave me. For a wedding present my parents gave me the deeds to the family home as they were going to move further south, with the plan to retire in the next few years.

I had found a job with a local insurance company in sales, I took to it like a duck to water. Salary was low but commission could bolster that to make almost double the initial salary. Just meant long hours, usually twelve hours a day and the occasional weekends. Miri got a part time job as a receptionist with her intent to still get her degree but doing the majority online. This is where her parents support became invaluable, when the twins were born they became our childcare and loved any excuse to have the grandkids.

It was three years later when the Sandy Thompson incident occurred. I had been named as the Salesman of the year for the North Carolina Region. Our small company had been bought by a nationwide outfit and believed in awarding success. As well as the $2500 bonus, I was given an all-expense paid three night trip to Washington where our head office was based. This would include a Gala dinner on the first night where the overall Salesman of the year would be determined and then two days to ourselves. For Miri and me it would be the first time away on our own without the twins and we were really looking forward to it. Two days prior to leaving, Luke started with Whooping Cough, Kelly started the next day. Unfortunately I had to attend so Miri kissed me goodbye on the Friday morning and insisted that I try and enjoy the next few days.

Arriving an hour or so before the Gala was due to start, I had time to register and let them that I didn't have a plus one with me. Showered and shaved, dressed in my rented tux I found my place at the table and found that I was placed next to a Sandy Thompson from our Little Rock Office. Whereas most people in attendance were in their late thirties or older. Sandy was a year older than my twenty one and was in her first full year in the company. Prior to this event I had only had a few beers in my life, here there was a free open bar. I had a couple of glasses of wine with dinner. Then when the awards were announced I was shocked to find I had one salesman of the year. Presented with a Trophy and a cheque for $10k, when I arrived back at the table a bottle of Champagne had been sent over courtesy of the bosses. Honestly the rest of the night was blur from there until I woke at Five AM the following morning lying next to a gloriously naked Sandy Thompson. Scared shitless I was back in my room, packed and on the road home within twenty minutes.

Miri was certainly surprised to see me Four and a half hours later when I got home. She was certainly not very happy ten minutes later when I explained that I had got drunk and slept in another girl's bed. The only thing she asked me was what was the girls name and before I could explain anything more she told me she was going to parents for a couple of days. She packed a small bag and left the kids with me. For three days she wouldn't take my calls didn't want to see me. I went to work on the Tuesday after dropping the kids at the childcare we used and when I returned home she was there as if nothing ever happened. When I tried to talk to her she stopped me and told me if I ever mentioned it again she would take the kids and leave and would never return. That night we went to bed and she fucked me. There was no intimacy and feeling just ninety minutes of hard fucking. It took many months for the intimacy to return but it did eventually and true to her request the incident was never spoken about again.

The following year Miri got her business degree and wanted to get a job that used her education. Our relationship with Dan and Lisa had blossomed to the point that we spent every weekend together with them unless work for either Dan or me got in the way. Of course that wouldn't stop the girls from getting together, although that was different as they had moved fifteen miles away to be closer to Dan's work. Ironically, Miri's Parents had moved to the same area to get a larger place for the grandkids to have space. They also started to look after Cassie, giving Dan and Lisa a bit more freedom. Dan's company was growing fast and they needed an Office Manager and he needed a Personal Assistant. It was a perfect fit for Miri and after interviewing with the Managers she was given the job and she loved it. She grew with the company and was always by Dan's side hence the name Dan's work wife. This all continued for seven years and then Lisa died suddenly and unexpectedly from a Brain Aneurysm. She was actually visiting me on the day that it happened as was normally the case when Dan and Miri had to travel. This was devastating for all of us, more so obviously for Dan. He couldn't cope on his own and certainly couldn't look after his Eleven year old daughter on his own. The solution was that Miri was stopping in for a couple of hours three days a week after work to make sure all was clean and tidy and to make up dinners that could be heated. Or so I was led to believe.

Sixteen Months Later

I was just coming out of the Garage with the last box of stuff to load in the van when I saw her car come into the drive. It was the first time she had been back since she had told me she wanted a divorce and was certainly the last person I expected to see.

As she got out of her car I greeted her, "Miranda, aren't you breaking the restraining order by being here?" My tone was flat and neutral.

"That stopped the day we were divorced, How are you?"

I shrugged, "Living the dream, would you like a coffee?" I was already walking back in the house.

"That would be nice." She answered following me.

The house was bare save a few boxes and the dining room table. The white goods and one of the bedroom set ups were being left for the new owners. The house content sale had been very successful over the last couple of days. What was left was going to the dump, the son of one of my ex co-workers was going to do that for me the day before I exchanged the keys. His wife and a friend of hers were going to clean through for me as well. There was a solitary birthday card on the mantelpiece as I had turned thirty eight a couple of days earlier and the office had got together to send me one from all of them as well a good luck card that I had packed with my luggage. The company had been very good to me after being with them for over nineteen years and I was leaving some good friends behind but it had to be done.

Having made the coffee we sat in the exact same places as we had been Sixteen months earlier. "So, for what do I have the pleasure of your company this fine day?" I asked.

"The kids received their letters saying you were moving, why didn't you call them you didn't have to send them registered post!" Actually I did as it was the only way I could confirm that they got them. I'm sure I would have been chewed out otherwise.

"I did, actually that's not correct, I called Kelly as I can't call Luke"

"Why can't you call Luke?"

"I don't have his number," I sighed, "look the kids don't keep in contact with me," I could see she didn't believe me. I resigned myself to having to prove it to her. My phone was on the table in front of me so I unlocked it and dialled Kelly's number. On loudspeaker it rang ten times before going to voicemail. I looked at Miri, "Would you mind calling her please?"

"She must be busy." She replied as an excuse but still got her phone out and called on loudspeaker as well. It was answered on the second ring.

"Hi Mum, how you doing?" Kelly asked brightly.

"I'm fine sweetie, what are you up to?"

"Me and Cassie are just chilling. Going to a party later so saving our energy." My daughter replied.

"Have you heard from your dad recently?" Miri asked raising her eyebrow at me.

"Yeah, I spoke to him last night. He said that he had just spoken to you and he caught up with both of us for ten minutes. I think he was going to catch Luke today." Kelly answered oblivious to the real question.

I could feel my gut tighten as she referred to Dan as Dad. Miri could read me and could see that that little comment had hurt me. I just lent back in my chair and stared at the ceiling.

"You mean Dan?"

"Yeah, but he likes it when I call him dad. Anyway he will be dad in three weeks!" My daughter continued giggling. In three weeks my ex-wife was due to get remarried. Believe it or not they had sent me an invite! Like I was going to turn up.

"So when was the last time you spoke to your real dad?" Miri persevered.

"Oh I don't know, a few weeks ago maybe!" The giggling tone had disappeared. I had opened my call log to Kelly and Miri could see all my attempted calls. In fact neither of my kids had made a single call to me since Miri had left.

"Well that's funny because I'm sat with him at the moment and saw him try to call you a minute before I did."

"Oh" was my daughter's intelligent response

"Just to remind you, you only have one Dad and Dan isn't it. We will take later young lady!" Miranda was clearly upset as she killed the call. "Why haven't you got Luke's number? Dan made sure he had a replacement phone and number within a few hours of his old phone being pinched."

"Beats me!" I shrugged. "Look don't be too hard on them. It's the way they have been programmed." I pointed to my call list on my phone, "I'm not relevant to them anymore and as you heard I've been replaced." That comment hurt her but it was the truth. "I think since you left I have spoken to them combined for a total of one hour. I haven't even been in the same zip code with them since you left. I've tried, boy have I tried. I even got box tickets for the Braves opening day game. But Luke said he was busy, I later found out that he and Dan with a couple of other guys got some last minute tickets. But hey, if that what they want to do I'm not going to force them otherwise."

We were silent with our thoughts for a few moments before Miri changed the subject. "So are you moving down to be close to your folks?"

"Not exactly, I going down to look after Mom. She needs full time care these days."

"Oh my god! What's wrong with her? How's your dad coping? You never said anything!" the tears were filling her eyes.

"She has late stage Alzheimer's, it's pretty bad she doesn't remember anything 90% of the time. As to dad, we buried him just over three weeks ago. They said Heart Attack personally I think it was a broken heart."

"Oh Nooo!" My ex-wife cried. "How do you know it was a broken Heart and why didn't you call us?"

"I did call, in fact it was the last time I spoke to Kelly, the day after Thanksgiving. It was then that I found out that Luke had a new number and quickly told me she was busy and would call me back. She never did. I tried her daily for a couple of weeks until I finally got the message. Ironically, although they had blocked me on Facebook they hadn't blocked Dad. I found out that when she said she busy it was because she going to the Black Friday sales with you and 'Granny Roberts.'" I said using air quotes. "As to knowing that he died of a broken heart that's easy. I hadn't told them about our divorce, I was meaning to do it earlier but couldn't do it. When you left I went to see them the following weekend to talk them face to face about it. When I got there was when I found how bad Mom was. Dad had been telling me how forgetful she was but from last time I had seen them the Christmas before to then she had gone downhill badly. You obviously wouldn't have known because you had been unable to come with me for the three years prior when I took the kids." I couldn't help myself from getting that dig in, and we both knew the reasons she was unavailable. "So I couldn't tell them then and it just got harder and harder. Anyway, At Thanksgiving after we had eaten and settled Mom down, dad got on my case as he hadn't heard from you or the kids for over a year. So I told him the truth. In the morning I found him in his favourite chair, clutching a picture of the four of us, it was still wet from his tears. So yes our divorce broke his heart, you know Mom and Dad had been married fifty two years. He was old school and expected us to be married till the day we died. It was at the funeral that I suddenly realised how alone I was in the world. It was just me and the chaplain and a couple of their neighbours that attended. I couldn't even take Mom, she didn't even know what was going on. For a week or two after I explained to Mom he was gone when she was lucid enough. But I can't take the anguish it causes her every time she hears it so now I just tell that he has had pop out." Miri was sobbing by now, I had no more tears to cry I was empty on emotion and had been for a while. My eyes went to the solitary birthday card on the mantle, Miri had followed my eyes and had obviously noticed. I continued in the same neutral voice, "I may be alone, Mom doesn't even know who I am but I owe her for bringing me into this world so yes I'm packing up everything to look after her for whatever time she has left. It's amazing what the consequences of your actions were and how many people it affected. Your destroyed our marriage, destroyed my relationship with my kids and destroyed my family as well!" I finished with the venom I promised I wouldn't show but I just couldn't help myself.

"Don't you dare put this all on me, at least Dan is loyal to me and remember it was you that cheated on us with Sandy Thomson!" Miranda spat right back at me.

I'm sure she didn't expect me to start laughing and not just laugh but proper tears in my eyes laughter. "Oh yes let us not forget Sandy Thomson, the reason you spent fifteen plus years plotting your revenge! As you told me I couldn't mention her name as you would leave me and take the kids, I suppose that ship has sailed. I. Never. Touched. Sandy. Thompson!" I yelled at her. "When I woke on her bed I was still dressed in the same Tux I was wearing the night before! Nothing ever happened!"

"You expect me to believe you!" Miri shouted back at me.

"Of course I expect you to believe me, I have never lied to you before and certainly have no reason to lie to you know." I said in a more subdued voice as I started to get myself back under control.
