Chapter 8
David's curiosity was now piqued. He knew Linda had just been fucked or was maybe even still fucking when his arrival had interrupted her. He expected it to have been Tom, but Adam also being present was puzzling. He knew someone had ejaculated inside her, and given the quantity he had noticed running down her leg, maybe Tom and Adam had both dumped their sperm inside her. He raised his eyebrows in thought.
While Linda was in the shower David unpacked his overnight bag in what he'd previously considered his and Linda's room. That the room was almost devoid of her things, the boys not having had enough time to transfer more of her things from Tom's bedroom, just added confirmation to the knowledge now that she was no longer using this room.
After getting his things settled he returned to the lounge room and sat down on the settee.
Linda entered the room and sat down beside David just as started speaking. "How have you been, Tom?" asked David. "I understand your cancer is in remission and that you have been getting progressively stronger these last few months."
"Tom smiled, "Yes, I've been lucky I guess. And I owe it all to Linda. The doctor agrees with that conclusion too, as the change started just after she arrived. You are a very lucky man, David, to have someone so caring beside you." He knew as soon as those last few words left his mouth that that was an incredibly stupid thing to say. "I mean to be married to someone as special as Linda, sacrificing herself, giving of herself so unselfishly to help someone in need, to provide some comfort and companionship to a dying man." "Oh Fuck" he thought! "That was even worse" as he noticed a menacing look momentarily cross David's face.
Linda visibly cringed, as it just exaggerated the time David and she had been apart, spending almost all her time exclusively with Tom these last months, rather than with her husband. She initially relaxed a little when David replied.
"Yeah, I guess I have been lucky..." followed by an extended pause before he continued, "And your remission must be very good and welcome news to you too."
"But your good fortune has come at a significant cost to me. I don't begrudge you your improved health but I need to sort some things out. You must know that Linda having given so much of herself, so, as you put it, unselfishly, to you, means that that same much of herself and unselfishness has been taken away from me... "
Wanting to continue the impression that he was ignorant of what he now knew was happening said, "Tom, I've come down this weekend to spend some time with MY wife. Given the length of her stay down here and the uncertainty of when she might return to OUR home,...hers and mine, she and I need to have a chat about a couple of things... I don't want to intrude on her giving you the comfort and companionship she has been giving you, but I hope you don't mind if I steal her for a little while for some of my own comfort and companionship time." The snideness though, in his voice was unmistakable.
"Of course David... Make yourself at home here. If you want anything just ask. Adam and I will give you all the time you need."
Linda cringed and David's eyes momentarily opened wide and his jaw dropped before he caught and composed himself after the "Adam and I" comment made by Tom.
A pause, then "Are you happy for all of us to have dinner together? I can put some steaks on the grill. I'll even make some salads so you guys don't get interrupted."
David looked questioningly at Linda but she just sat there looking at him with a look David could not read or interpret. "Sure, thanks, Tom. If Linda agrees I'm happy to do that, thank you." He looked at her again and she gave a half-hearted smile and nodded yes.
"Let's go for a drive," David said as he stood, and extended his hand to her.
He now sounded quite calm, she thought, firm, not wanting to take any nonsense, but not threatening either. Maybe everything would be okay.
They drove to the beach only ten minutes away and parked overlooking the bay, mountains visible in the distance on the other side of the bay.
"It's pretty here," said David.
"Yes, I like it here."
"Enough to stay."
"Oh no... Perhaps we can come and spend a few days here when we come to visit Tom."
"So you intend to return home, to be with me?"
"Of course."
"When...? Are you coming back with me tomorrow?" he asked, sounding a little surprised.
She just sat there in silence for a minute. "David, I want to go back with you, but I would just like to stay a little longer, until Tom is a little stronger, until he is stable. Then I will know he can be left to his own devices, at least until we visit him."
"A little longer. Do you have any idea of how long, 'a little longer', will be?"
"Not really, but I don't think it's far away. Tom is progressing nicely, even according to his doctor."
