This is a short story that popped in my head when I heard a recording by Diana Krall singing 'Cry Me a River", a song made popular by Julie London in the 50's and covered often by many other artists including Joe Cocker. There's no sex happening here except in the background. I get tired of all of the stories where the wife is the philanderer because I think in the real world husbands cheat on a larger scale than women do. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it...
Cry Me A River
Julie Reeves was sitting in the home that was once shared by she and her ex-husband Richard Mason perusing the final decree regarding their divorce that had arrived in the mail that day. It brought back the memories of how he had hurt her by announcing that he didn't love her anymore and how he had found someone else, so he was filing for divorce. He had been a total asshole as he recounted his grievances that evening.
When he had finished with his little speech, he turned on his heels and headed for their bedroom, packed a couple of suitcases with some clothes and then left while saying he'd be back for the rest of his stuff.
Julie sat in their living room shell shocked by Richards announcement having no clue that he was dissatisfied with their lives together. Finally, when everything sank in, she began crying uncontrollably on their couch. She was lamenting the loss of her marriage and was wondering how she was going to live. After a couple of hours she decided that she needed an ally who would be thinking straight because she sure as hell wasn't, so she called her best friend Alice.
When Alice ascertained what Julie was talking about between sobs, she said she would be right over. Since Alice lived two doors down she was at Julie's door within 5 minutes and just walked in like she always did. She found Julie on her sofa, so she walked up to her, pulled her up and hugged her as hard as she could as she tried to comfort her friend.
Alice had brought a bottle of wine with her and said, "Come on Jules, let's go in the kitchen, drink some wine and then you can tell me exactly what transpired. Okay?"
Julie nodded and led the way into the kitchen. She sat at the table where she and Alice had spent many hours talking during happier times while Alice opened the bottle and brought a couple a couple of glasses to the table. Alice poured out some wine for both of them, held hers up in toast and said, "Here's to ruining little dick's life!"
Julie couldn't help but laugh and then took a sip of wine. "Okay, now tell me what exactly happened," Alice asked?
"Well, Richard came home..."
"No! There is no more Richard, there is only dick, with a small 'd'!"
Julie smiled and carried on, "Okay, dick came home and just announced he was going to divorce me because he didn't love me anymore and that he had someone else. He griped about how I wasn't pretty enough for him anymore because he had a certain status he had to maintain in the business world and some other shit like that. I didn't really hear most of it because I was in shock that he wanted to leave me."
With that, Julie began sobbing once again, so Alice moved to sit next Julie and held her tightly against her. When Julie had calmed down again, Alice said, "Dan has a woman in his law office that is an absolute tiger in divorce cases. Let me call him really quick."
Alice whipped out her phone and called her husband;
"Hi honey, is Julie okay?" Dan asked.
Alice replied, "No, her asshole husband just dumped her for a shinier model apparently. Is there any chance that we can sic Monica on him?"
Dan laughed and said. "That bad huh? Well, I'll give her a call and see what her schedule is like. I'll get back to you".
"That would be great. We'll look forward to your call! Love you...
Alice concentrated on keeping Julie focused on anything besides her husband by talking about mundane day to day things in their lives. It seemed like it was taking for ever for Dan to get back to them. Alice was thinking about calling Dan back when the doorbell rang.
Julie answered the door to a beautiful red-headed woman with bright blue eyes. Before she could inquire as to who the woman was, the woman asked, "Julie Mason?" Julie nodded, so Monica smiled and said, "I'm Monica Ames. Dan Jensen said you're having marital issues and asked me to help you out. Any friend of Dan's is a friend of mine."
Julie invited Monica in the house and led her into the kitchen where Alice was waiting. When Alice saw her friend, she jumped out of her seat and rushed over to hug Monica and asked "What are you doing here?"
Monica laughed and said, "Well, Dan said that your best friend just got dumped on by her soon to be ex-husband, so I decided I should come and see what I can do to help. You know I'll do anything for your husband after how he helped me out all of those years ago, so here I am."
She then turned her attention back to Julie and asked, "So, what exactly transpired here this evening? Oh, before you say anything, would you mind me recording our conversation? It helps for me to go back over things so I don't have to take notes."
Julie said it was fine so she recounted her story once again. Monica asked many questions trying to clarify points and draw out more of the conversation. "So, he said he had found someone else that he now loved, do you think he's been having sex on the side? Has his sexual appetite changed recently?"
Julie thought for a moment and then said, "Yeah, it has. He'd usually want sex a couple of times a week, but about three months ago he quit asking."
"Okay, we need to establish how long this has been going on, so do you have a computer that we can look at to see if there's a virtual paper trail?"
