Cheating Death
Sheri Lambert was relaxed in her seat aboard the train home. The spring semester had just ended and she couldn't wait to get back to her life as a wife to her husband, Henry. She couldn't wait to see her parents once again. She was in the second year of her graduate studies at university going for her masters in business. She hadn't been home for a few months. She sighed as the train rocked down the tracks.
She had earned her undergrad degree at the age of eighteen. She was now twenty and has been married for two years to her husband, Henry who was five years her senior, having just graduated from undergrad school last year. To say Sheri was smart was an understatement. She was brilliant and already had offers of employment at some of the biggest firms in the country.

Sheri had met Henry on a train home, during one of their semester breaks. They started talking and before Henry knew it, Sheri had him in one of the restrooms in a lip lock that surprised him. Yes, when Sheri saw a man she wanted, she let him know. She didn't just go kissing every man she met. Henry was amazed by Sheri's audacity and called her almost every day while home on break. They started going out just a scant week after the restroom incident.
They continued going out once back at school. When Sheri graduated, Henry asked her to marry him. She said yes, but needed her parent's permission as she wasn't quite eighteen yet. They put the marriage off until she turned eighteen. The next year, Henry graduated and Sheri turned eighteen. They were married in her parent's church. They spent their honeymoon in Naples Florida at the Hilton on the beach.
When they were on the beach, Sheri was hit on by almost every guy that passed them. Sheri would laugh, Henry would scowl, at each of them, as Sheri proudly waved her left hand in their faces. They would move on but always came back gazing at Sheri in her bikini. Henry would scowl. Sheri would giggle.
"Henry, there is no need for you to get so angry. The chances of me cheating on you are a million... no a billion to one... no zero. I will never, ever have sex with another man but you. I already promised that in church."
"I know sweetheart, but the audacity of them, even looking at you..."
"Henry, let them look, only you will be able to touch, ever," said Sheri looking over her sunglasses at her handsome, jealous, husband.
"I know baby, but I love you so much and I don't even want to share you like this, let alone with others."
"I know dear. It will never happen... unless."
"Unless what?" asked Henry astounded by her statement.
"Unless you want it too or you cheat on me first."
"Well, neither of those will ever happen, my dear, sweet, Sheri," replied Henry, his smile a mile wide.
"Good, then you have nothing to worry about. Nor do I," Sheri said.

All that happened two years ago. In that two years, Sheri has been away from home more than at home. She did, however, conceive sometime during her honeymoon and was six weeks pregnant when she found out. She made the trip home to tell her husband and her parents. All of them were overjoyed. He parents because they would be grandparents, her husband because he would hopefully have a son to raise. He wouldn't mind a girl but was hoping for a boy is what he told Sheri.
Sheri returned to school the next Monday having missed just three days. Within the week back she had a miscarriage. She was in the university hospital. Her husband and parents came down to see her and make sure she was all right. The doctor came in and shooed everyone out of her room. She was looking very sad when she started to talk to Sheri.
"Sheri, dear, we have determined the cause of your miscarriage."
"Something genetic?" asked Sheri.
"No. I'm afraid not. Somehow, you ingested ethylene glycol."
"Antifreeze?" asked Sheri.
"Yes. Not enough to kill you or harm you, but enough to make your baby abort. I'm sorry, but I had to call the police. They are searching you dorm room now. They will be over to talk to you and your family once they are done. Again, I'm so sorry," the doctor said squeezing Sheri's hand.
Sheri sat there shocked that anyone would even think she would do this to herself. She was even more shocked that anyone she knew would do this to her.
"Doctor, do you know about when this happened?" asked Sheri.
"It had to have happened within the last week and a half. It was a very small amount, but ethylene glycol does get into the bloodstream and wouldn't be stopped by the blood barrier to the fetus."
"So it had to be when I was home telling my family and friends I was pregnant last Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday?"
"Yes. Or that Saturday or Sunday. I would guess closer to Sunday as the process is very rapid after ingestion."
"Sunday, uh. Okay, I know where I was Sunday and Saturday night."
"Be well Sheri," the doctor said and left her room.
Sheri's family came back in asking what the doctor had said, but Sheri just lay back and closed her eyes. After a while, everyone but her mother left.

When Sheri opened her eyes she was crying once again. Mom came and sat beside her on the bed.
"What's the matter, dear?" Mom asked.
"Someone killed my baby," replied Sheri.
"You can't think that way dear."
"No, mom, someone caused me to lose the baby. That's what the doctor said. Someone gave me ethylene glycol Saturday or Sunday when I was home. Who would do something like that?" Sheri was sobbing into her hands."
"Oh dear. Are they sure?" mom asked.
"Yes mom, they are sure. The police are at my dorm room searching it now. They will be here to asked questions soon."
