Memories, he couldn't help but drift back to his first meeting with Jade. At the time, he ran his little mobile food caravan in Paraparaumu beach.
He recalled the first time he saw her.
"Yo, bro. What's the chance of getting a couple of burgers?" She had asked.
He took in her gorgeous olive skin, her big eyes, the mass of curly black hair that sat uncontrolled beneath her wide brimmed sun hat. Those damned eyes, were like magnets, he couldn't help but stare into the deep oceans of light.
"Yeah, can do. What do you want? Chicken, beef, venison, goat. I got it all."
"Goat..." She gasped. "Ewww, no thanks. Maybe a chicken, or beef? One of each."
"You're missing an opportunity. The goats awesome."
She shivered, but giggled. "I reckon the only thing I'd be missing is daihorea."
"Wow, that hurts. My food is better than that."
"Yeah, sorry dude, I was trying to make a joke. I'm a bit stuck in my ways you know. I'm not really adventurous when it comes to food."
"No offence taken. Beef and chicken it is." For the first time, he noticed the girl in the wheelchair beside her. He pointed discreetly. "Family?"
Jade, turned following his eyes. "No, I'm her carer. I have been looking after her for six months."
"Wow, kudos to you. Must be amazingly taxing work."
"It has it's moments. She replied. "Although, the highs make it all worthwhile."
Dillon nodded, as he started to cook the food. Being lunchtime, there was a growing line of customers building up. He would have loved to chat with her, but he was now inundated with orders.
Toiling away in the van, no air-con, only the big open serving hatch for some cool air. He couldn't stop staring at the girl. She must have been only eighteen or so, about the same age as himself. It was just something about her. He was drawn to her. She might not have been a beauty queen, but she exuded a warmth, and she was cute. That cute upturned nose, and her lips, holy shit. So full and delicious. He could get lost in a kiss there.
He called out her number, and handed the burgers and fries through the hatch, along with a coke and lemonade.
Surprised at all that he held out she said concern evident in her squeaky voice. "I didn't order all that?"
"Hey, it's on the house okay. You're doing an amazing thing. My way of paying it forward, and saying, thanks for being a sweet human."
She looked stunned. "I can't let you do that." She looked at him, and the van. He clearly wasn't well off. "Let me pay for it."
Dillon, held up his hand. "No can do. Sorry, I'm really busy. Enjoy the food."
She smiled at him, with gratitude. "Thanks, I'm Jade, by the way."
"Dillon," he called as he watched her walk away. Damn she was a cutie. Back to work he went, flat out as it had been every day since he set up here at the beach. It was holiday season, and there were plenty of holiday makers around.
It was going to be a long day.
It was nine O'clock the coolish night air closing in. As he finished up cleaning down the work surfaces, and put away the utensils. Getting ready to go home he heard that voice.
"Hey Dillon."
Stunned he glanced up, pleasantly surprised. "Wow, Jade. Nice to see you."
"I just wanted to stop by and say thanks again for the food. That was really sweet of you."
"Nah, no biggie. You're doing amazing shit helping that girl."
She frowned a little. "I get paid for it, like it is a job you know that... Right?"
"Doesn't matter. It's how you do it that matters. I saw the way you were with her. You care, and that's what makes the difference."
"Thanks, I wish everybody thought that way."
"So what's the problem with the girl?"
"Cerebral Palsy. She's really struggling at the moment. I live with her, full time carer like."
"Sweet, who looks after her while you're not there?"
"Her Mum comes around most nights to give me a break. She'll be there for an hour or so. I wanted to say thanks, then have a stroll along the beach before going back. By the way. The food was delicious, I mean really yummy."
"Glad you liked it. Where abouts do you live?"
She pointed back towards the houses that stretched along the coast. "Over by the motorway, Pearson street. What about you?"
"The caravan park. I'm from the Hutt. I got a permit for the summer to run the van here."
She giggled, and it sounded very sexy. "No way, I'm from Trentham."
"Yeah, bugger me, I'm from Wallaceville. By the station."
Things went awkwardly quiet, so he asked. "Would you like some company on your walk?"
"That'd be choice."
He locked up the van, and off they went. There were still kids playing on the beach, games of chasings as the darkness set in.
"What got you into caring for the disabled?" Dillon asked.
"My brother. He was disabled, and I sort of defaulted to being his carer. Mum and Dad both worked. I'm not complaining like. I loved him, and loved looking after him. He was special."
"Was?"
She nodded, her eyes suddenly full of sadness. "He died two years ago. That's when I decided to do it full time. Went to polytech, did the training and here I am."
"The girl today, is she your first?"
"No, I've had a couple of others. This is my first live in position though. Kayla, is amazing. Really sweet. I have enjoyed caring for her."
"Yeah, I saw the connection. She obviously likes you as well."
As they walked, they took off their shoes and paddled in the shallow calm waters. They talked about growing up in the Hutt, about life.
"So, Dillon. How come you ended up running a food caravan, did you have to train as a chef?"
"Nah, I haven't exactly been a model citizen. Got involved in drugs, got sent off to borstal. My parents didn't want anything to do with me. I never even finished fifth form." He laughed bitterly. "Didn't even get school cert."
"Wow, I'm sorry you went through that. It must have been awful."
"Nah, all good. I worked different jobs, but I'm a bit of a rebel, a loner. I got into trouble, cos I hated being told what to do."
She sniggered. "I would never have guessed that. Still... How did you end up with the van?"
"A mate was selling it, I'd worked for him a few times, and enjoyed it. He let me pay him back over six months. It sorta worked out for both of us."
"You are really popular, I get that cos your food was on the money dude."
"Thanks, I'm trying new shit all the time. I don't wanna be selling the same shit as everybody else. I'm trying to do shit my way."
"How come you're staying at the caravan park?"
"It's cheap. The vans doing okay, but I hardly make a killing."
They wandered back to the van, and Jade, said. "Thanks for walking with me. I enjoyed it."
Dillon tried to think of something to say, some way in. "Any time, I enjoyed it as well. The beach, warm water, a pretty girl. It was heaven for me."
"Cheeky bugger, but thanks. I'm hardly pretty."
"Bullshit, stop surfing for compliments. You're bloody gorgeous, and I think you know it."
She ruffled, her jet black curly hair. "Not with this mop."
"Bloody gorgeous, and I mean that. The hair suits you, I think it mirrors your personality. A little wild, definitely free."
She wandered away, and he watched her go until the darkness enveloped her.
Jade, stopping for lunch became a regular thing, she came a little earlier, so Dillon could sit with them and chat. He liked her, and they had a connection. Every day that connection tightened a little, the conversations deepened, Nothing was off limits. Dillon, loved her sense of humour, not everybody got him. He could be a little dark. Jade, even when he pushed the boundaries, she got it.
It wasn't just Jade, Kayla, liked him as well. She often talked about Dillon, on the walk back to their home. Jade, realised early that Kayla had a crush on him.
"You like him like him, aye sis?" She giggled enjoying the blush on Kayla's, cheeks.
"He is lovely isn't he?" Kayla answered. "I think he likes me."
"He does like you." Jade said, leaning down to cuddle Kayla. "How could he not like a hottie like you babe."
The day Jade, turned up alone, red eyed and distraught. Dillon rushed out to sit with her."What happened?"
"I don't know. She was okay when I tucked her into bed, and I checked her during the night." The tears literally gushed from Jades eyes, her cheeks saturated. Dillon, drew her into an embrace holding her tightly.
"Then, I went in this morning." Jade sobbed. "She was cold, and lifeless. I realised she had passed during the night. It was awful. I panicked, didn't know what to do. I blame myself. I should have checked her."
"Calm down, Jade. You couldn't be awake twenty four hours a day."
"Calm down." She snapped. "You didn't see her, she was dead. Do you understand... Dead..."
"I understand Jade. I wasn't being a smart arse. You have no need to blame yourself."
"What would you do?" She responded sarcastically.
"Blame myself." Dillon sighed. She pushed her face into the side of his neck, her face wet, tears staining his T- Shirt. He realised, words weren't going to fix this, all he could do was hold her.
