The name is Amanda Haguel and I am a young biracial woman living in the city of Boston, Massachusetts. I am the heroine of this tawdry little tale. A five-foot-nine, lean and athletic, caramel-skinned and curly-haired gal with curves in all the right places. The daughter of an African-American father and a Caucasian mother. Born and raised in Bean Town, USA. I've got lots to share with you folks, so grab a seat and hold on tight.
These days, I am a student at the Brighton Institute of Technology in the city of Brighton, Massachusetts. Brighton Tech is how we students call it. A small private school with about five thousand students. The institute has a focus on computer science, programming and various other aspects of technical education including engineering. That's why I'm there. Brighton Tech has one of the best undergraduate engineering programs in the state of Massachusetts. I could have gone to a place like the world-famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology but it wouldn't be my style. I like to do my own thing and I don't follow the crowd. That's why Brighton Tech is my home.
Brighton Tech has two campuses, one in Brighton and one in Milton. The Milton campus is the flagship campus of the school. It's where the dormitories are, and it's also where the athletic complex is located. Brighton Tech couldn't afford to build an athletic complex in urban Boston. Bigger schools have tried and failed. The Brighton Tech Department of Athletics sponsors Men's Intercollegiate Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Water Polo, Gymnastics, Rifle, Soccer, Swimming, Rugby, Lacrosse, Golf, Volleyball, Ice Hockey, Football and Wrestling along with Women's Intercollegiate Softball, Basketball, Rifle, Cross Country, Soccer, Water Polo, Gymnastics, Wrestling, Swimming, Lacrosse, Golf, Volleyball, Field Hockey, Rugby and Equestrian. We compete in the NCAA Division Two.
I'm a member of the Women's Rugby team. I've loved Rugby even since I was introduced to the sport while on a trip with my father, Lester Haguel, in England. Rugby is a lot of fun. Like Football, but without the helmets and pads. Personally, I think it's more fun but legions of my fellow countrymen would disagree. For the sake of being conciliatory, I will say to each his own and leave it at that. This year, we've got a good team. I like the new roster. Some of the girls can actually play. Brighton Tech's sports teams tend to attract a lot of amateurs. Don't ask me why.
As an experienced senior, I'm the co-captain of the Women's Rugby squad. We've taken other teams from across New England and done alright. I think we actually have a shot at making it to the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division Two Championships this year. Of course, you didn't hear me say that. I don't want to jinx it. When you've got a dream, you need to protect it. Especially from the haters, those men and women who love to see you fail at what you try to accomplish. Don't ask me why the haters do what they do. You should already know. Hello, it's in their name! The haters hate, pure and simple. To expect them to do anything else would be too ridiculous, don't you think?
