The Coming Sapphic Revolution
A Fantasy About How It Could Possibly, Maybe, Happen
2010 - Almost everything involving lesbians, including lesbian public displays of affection, lesbian dating and, especially, lesbian marriage is stigmatized severely by society. Heterosexual normative conditioning is routine and pervasive. Media descriptions of lesbians are scarce, and a common theme of most movies with lesbians in them is that the lesbians come to an unhappy ending.
Due to discrimination and societal pressure, only 1% of women have the courage to marry another women, and some of these marriages are illegal and therefore unofficial. Only 1% of women lose their virginity (have as their first sex partner) to another woman. Only 3% of women who are married to men and have an affair, decide to have it with another woman. The Internet has started to become a real factor in society, and Internet porn becomes increasingly common, but most people incorrectly assume that very few women watch it.
2015 - The U.S. Supreme Court legalizes gay marriage. This happens in many other countries as well at roughly the same time. Although some states had previously legalized gay marriage, national legalization was a watershed event because it meant that lesbian marriage was at least a possibility everywhere, and was recognized by society as legitimate.
Soon after this ruling, lesbian marriages doubled, as 2% of women who got married decided to marry another woman. Societal discrimination against lesbians started to erode, and the media started to treat lesbian relationships more positively. But societal pressure on women to exclusively date and marry heterosexually is still overwhelming.
Now 3% of women lose their virginity to another woman, and 10% of women who are married to men and decide to have an affair, have it with another woman. A growing number of women, especially younger women, watch Internet porn, especially lesbian porn. Some actresses and singers date and marry other woman, and but society dismisses this as "just Hollywood being Hollywood".
2020 - More and more actresses and singers date and marry other woman, but society still dismisses this as meaningless. Nevertheless, the number of brides who decide to marry another women rises to 4%, and 9% of women lose their virginity to another woman. Most straight women and men ignore these increases and aren't even aware of the trends. Another interesting trend is that an increasing proportion of married women, now 20%, who have an affair, have it with another woman.
One of the reasons for these increases might be that most "straight" women who look at internet porn look at lesbian porn (true fact - lesbian porn is by far the leading choice among women). Another factor could be that scientific studies reveal that 75% of women don't come regularly from heterosexual intercourse, and that significantly more women come from lesbian sex then from straight sex (these are also true facts!). However, almost none of the "expert" psychologists who study sexuality even discuss the possible effects of ubiquitous Internet porn on women, letting women find out their true nature. Or that women's dissatisfaction with straight sex could be an important factor.
2025 - Societal discrimination against lesbians continues to decline as does the effects of heteronormative conditioning, so much so that 8% of women who get married decide to marry another woman, and 27% of women lose their virginity to another woman. A 2025 Gallop poll finds that 28% of young women are bi or lesbian (this is another true fact!), and more and more women - not just celebrities - openly date other women. Another interesting trend is that a third of married women who have an affair, have it with another woman.
