Chapter 20 - McKelly & Makoo
The morning was miserable. It was cold and windy and rainy. Ronnie took Lizzie downtown and hung at the Navy Yard with her. I told her I wanted Ronnie available during the videoconference.
I decided to be presentable for the videoconference, so I showered and put myself together, threw on some jeans and a sweatshirt Duane brought home for me from work. It was white with the words "Royce Field Services" in the shape of a badge in blue. Very cop. I figured if I'm going to be doing business, I may as well represent.
Lizzie called me on the video feed in the videoconference room at about ten fifteen. I was ready. I hoped Les was.
"Well, Hannah," Lizzie said over the feed, with Les sitting next to her. "It's your meeting, sister. You've got the floor."
"Okay. Les. How are you? How are the boys?"
"Everyone's great. You know the closer we get to New Years the freakier we get."
"I'll bet. Did Lizzie tell you what we'd be talking about?"
"No ma'am. Ms. Britain just said we were meeting this morning."
"Ms. Britain? What the fuck is that? Lizzie, what the fuck is that?"
"Just trying to keep it professional."
"So, stop wearing crotchless panties. Les, she is Lizzie, I am Hannah and you are Les, until you decide to be called something else. Ms. Britain, my ass. You bitch."
"You're right, boss. Les, I'm so sorry. I guess I let it go to my head. Do me a favor and if you see me heading in that direction, please steer me straight."
"Thank you, ladies, but I'm on pins and needles. Am I getting fired?"
"Fired? What in the world put that in your mind? You are practically Todd Recovery in toto. Quite the contrary, Les, we're going to ask you to join us in a very special way. If you choose not to, it will not affect your employment. As Recovery grows, you will grow with it, regardless. But what we are doing right now is welcoming you into our inner circle. Before you decide, though, you should know the price that is to be paid to join this circle. First, and most important, you will be entrusted with secret information that we expect you to hold in confidence, some for the rest of your life. People could die if the wrong people get some of this data. People could go to prison for a long time. And you know what happens when people die. It's always the wrong people. The thing we do is set that straight."
"Is this a dangerous job and is my family at risk?"
"Great question. To be honest with you, I cannot totally answer that. I'd say no more danger than the average woman living in South Philly. It's not really field work, so you won't be exposed to the risks field agents must face."
"Despite the primitive environs, you might be surprised at how safe my neighborhood is."
"I didn't mean..."
"No, it's fine. We'll get you down there around New Years and introduce you around. I think you would like that. It will give you a whole fresh perspective on South Philly."
"The Christmas Holidays are very important to my family and we always spend them down town in Rittenhouse. I'd love to take one of those days and come down and visit and do a meet and greet. In fact, Les, take notes. I want you to work a day out with either Lizzie or me for us to come down to Second Street at Christmas time, maybe even Christmas Day. See about renting a bus or two and a nice big box truck. We've started a new tradition where our family brings gifts for the kids at CHOP over the holidays. My kids love doing it and I would love to get a bus load or two of kids from the Second Street area to do the same. Then when we bring them home, we'll give them gifts. That ought to do that. Lizzie, what am I missing?"
"Everything. We still haven't told Leslie anything about what we are doing here."
"I'm so sorry, Les. Lots on my plate. Lots of distractions."
"Please don't apologize. It has to be hard to run so many companies."
"Thanks for that Les. You will find the longer you work for me, the more you will learn that what I need more than anything is forgiveness."
"I'm a Neumann-Goretti girl, Hannah. That's first grade stuff for me."
"Catholic school girl?"
"K to twelve."
"Hmmm. I'm wondering if you'll be able to tolerate how we may bend the rules occasionally. Tell me about your job."
"It's really interesting. I don't think I've ever done anything so important. Recovering girls kidnapped and taken away, mostly abroad, is so satisfying. We're up to forty-seven girls recovered."
"Very impressive. Do you know what the field operatives do out there to retrieve our lost girls?"
"I have a vague idea. I do a lot of the research to find them, and when we've got them, I do most of the paperwork to get them home. It's very taxing, but it's extremely satisfying. I have never loved a job more."
"The job we are proposing can be even more satisfying. It involves assisting a special team of operators who open doors for both Todd Recovery and Todd Acquisitions. My team is all former military. Lizzie, bring Ronnie in."
She went to the door to get Ronnie, and I called Duane over. When we were all together, I brought the focus back to Les. "Les, when it comes to trafficked girls, we don't just go after the girls. We go after the traffickers. That's what Acquisitions will do once it's fully up and running. Certain employees of RFS are members of this crew. We have done several missions together and have rescued many girls and women. Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?"
"It sounds terrific. I want in."
"Well, Leslie McKelly, every coin has two sides, and this one is no different. We have saved many, but we've also killed a few. Maybe a couple that law enforcement doesn't know about. Maybe a few that law enforcement knows about but just ain't sayin'. Our operators often find themselves in a dark place but, so far, have always come home to the light. Do you know where the leads come from that get a case started at Recovery?"
"I'm not absolutely sure, but I think it was a stash recovered from human traffickers."
"Close. Here is where we welcome you to the inner circle. What do you know about Peace Dunbar?"
"Scumbag."
"You wouldn't think that if not for me. How did you feel about him before the grand revelation?"
"He was a favorite. My husband followed him when he played with the Birds. Dunbar did a lot of charitable work too. That man fooled a lot of people."
