It's raining... it's always raining. I don't even have to open my eyes, I can feel it. I don't want to open my eyes, because then I have to get up and face this piss-washed city, and all the shit it contains. I wish for things... I wish I was different, but... I Continue to exist in this shell. A mix of human and electronics. The interface slot behind my ear, the full integration plug at the base of my skull. I guess I don't have it so bad, I'm not a cyborg. I'm not a brain in a machine. I have... most of my original parts, and ones that have been replaced are hidden by synthetic skin. Unlike some of my friends...
You have two new messages_
Fuck!
'Who are they from?'
Message one from unknown_
Message two from Darcy_
"Read message two." She said, still laying in bed with her eyes closed.
《Hey Liara, are you going to be downtown tonight? I have someone you're going to want to meet.
Darcy》
"Reply."

"I hadn't thought about it, but you have me intrigued. Send."

Liara swung her legs over the edge of the bed and sat up. Her feet settled on the metal floor and she felt... cold?
Cold? Why is the floor cold?
Her brain registered the floor as cooler than it should be. She shouldn't be able to feel the floor, because her legs had been replaced with cybernetic legs after a horrific car accident three years ago. The payout was enough to add top of the line synth skin that contained an array of tightly woven sensors across them to pick up every sensation normal skin would detect. The censors would send a sequence of code to a micro computer implanted in her brain that would take that code, and send a pulse to her brain telling her, the floor is cold and her body would react as anyone who didn't have cybernetic legs and "fake" skin over them.
She opened her eyes and observed the gloom of her apartment. The only light came through her large window. The neon of the city cast a bizarre mix of colors in her walls.
"ALICE, what is the ambient temperature here?" Liara asked her Autonomous Life Interface Computer ElectroAssistant aka ALICE.
"The current ambient temperature of your domicile is 62 degrees Fahrenheit." The computer voice replied.
"62?! ALICE, increase the temperature to 70 and start a shower. Also, please fabricate a cup of black coffee, a protein pack and two stim shots."
"Right away Miss Liara."
Liara stood and disrobed. Tossing her tank top and panties on the bed, she walked to her bathroom where she could hear the shower running. She stopped in front of a large mirror and looked at herself. She appeared young and fit. C cup breasts and a small tuft of dyed blue hair above her sex. Faint "seams" ran across her body where synth skin met actual skin, as well as where compartments could open within her cybernetics. She sighed and headed into the bathroom. She picked up a socket cover and installed it over the sockets she had behind her right ear and the base of her skull. Stepping into the shower, the hot water cascaded down her body and soothed her sour mood. As she leaned against the back wall of the shower, letting the water pound against her chest and tummy, she spoke.
"Read message one."
《Hello Liara, my name is Miss Kavanagh, I work for the Organization in asset acquisition. I have been informed that you have some skills that might be of use to me and my department. It's five days worth of work and you will be paid more than you currently make in your coding job in a month. If this interests you, please reply today. You have till 7 tonight to decide.》
"What the fuck?" She rinsed off and stepped out of the shower. Reaching for a towel she shook her head. "How the hell does the Organization even know who I am?" She said aloud as she pulled a comb through her blue hair.
"I am unsure." ALICE replied.
"Hypothetical ALICE." She said annoyed.
"My apologies Miss Liara."
"It's fine." She said drying off.
"Your coffee, protein pack and two stim shots are ready for you Miss Liara." ALICE said.
"Thank you." Liara replied, stepping back into her bedroom. She retrieved black panties and a push up bra from her drawer and put them on. A pair of cargo pants and a t-shirt was her typical outfit and it is exactly what she wore. The air in her apartment was finally at a comfortable level as she walked through the living room to her kitchen and retrieved her coffee. As she sipped it, a soft chime rang in her head.
Incoming message from Darcy_
"Read."
《Trust me! Meet me at Club Chaos around 10.
Darcy》
"Reply... alright, alright... see you at ten at club chaos. Send."
She unwrapped a protein pack and took a bite. It was bland, virtually tasteless, but nourishing, with the consistency of a cluster of nuts and crispy rice held together with some sort of sticky, viscous semi solid. Food for anyone not filthy rich consisted of mass produced bars of protein. She started to think about her message from Miss Kavanagh. She knew little of the organization besides what she had heard, and the fact their corporate symbol was on the vast majority of the technology she dealt with every day.
She also had seen their "Black Coats" security soldiers patrolling around their office buildings throughout the city state. They typically wore armored long black trench coats over a ballistic vest and tactical pants. The Organization security teams (or OST) were always around. Weather on foot, on a pursuit bike and occasionally in a 20 foot tall patrol mecha. Everything is always shrouded in black with slight trim in various colors denoting rank or division. The Organization was ever present, much to the chagrin of the population.
Sounds like a lot of money I certainly could use, but it's the Organization. Can I even trust them?
"Miss Liara, the time is currently 8:47 am."
"Shit! Thanks ALICE." She grabbed her coffee, stims and rushed out, grabbing her leather jacket as she always wore that as well.
"Commute time?"
47minutes and 14 seconds_
"Gonna be late... again" Liara said to herself running down the steps to the subway. She managed to catch a train right away and found a seat towards the back of the car. As the train raced down the tunnel, a chime went off in Liara's head.
Incoming call from Arden_
'Answer."
'Hey girl!' Arden greeted her happily.
'Hey Arden, what's going on?'
'I'm working security in midtown and thought maybe you'd want to get lunch since I'll be nearby.' she suggested.
'Yeah, I will call you when I head out for lunch.' She replied with a smile on her face.
'Cool! Talk soon!' Arden said and ended the connection.
Liara sat thinking about her life. What she really wanted for her future. She had been struggling with a few things in her life, but she always assumed she would have to keep those thoughts tucked away and never to be realized. She sighed and closed her eyes.
47 minutes later, Liara stepped off the subterranean train and rushed up the steps to the street. Hundreds of people hurried along the rain slick sidewalks as vehicles of all shapes and descriptions raced back and forth. She deftly stepped between fellow pedestrians and made her way to the office building she worked in. As she entered the lobby and made her way to the security checkpoint, she saw a familiar tall, purple skinned and haired, muscular woman smiling and greeting people as they checked in through the turnstiles.
"Liara!" She shouted over the noise of the lobby. Liara smiled and waved as she approached. "Hey girl!"
"I didn't know when you said you'd be working in midtown, that you meant in my building!" She said as the two hugged.
"I wanted to surprise you!" She replied.
"Well, it worked."
"So, just grab me when you want some lunch." Arden said.
"Of course!" Liara smiled. "I need to get going, but I'll see you around noon."
"You got it!" Arden replied enthusiastically.
Liara snuck her way in and to her desk. She booted it up and plugged in her interface cable. Interfacing directly with her computer allowed Liara to do multiple processes at the same time. She began her typical duties for her day job, while patching into her home server to access the code she had been working on for another project.
Miss Liara?_
'Hi ALICE.'
What can I help you with?_
'I just need access to what I was working on last night. I'm trying to double time on it so I can get some final details down for the emotion algorithm.' Liara replied.
Allow me to assist_
'Lemme nail some of my thoughts down, then I'll get your help.'
My systems and processing power are available if you would like_
'Thanks ALICE.'
After several hours, Liara made her way to the lobby to have lunch with Arden. As she arrived she quickly realized the lobby was mostly empty. She saw three security guards talking quietly and no Arden. She approached them.
"Excuse me, uh... where is Arden?" She asked.
"Oh, she was... called away." One of them said,
"Called away? By who?" Liara asked.
"I didn't ask, but it seemed important." He replied.
"Okay, thanks." She said and headed outside.
'Message Arden.'
