is generally accessible to the public, via a walkway fully circling the outer perimeter of the oval track. Having our Duke incoming Fresher IDs, we can access most of the stadium's facilities.

Standing close and watching the outdoor practice area, we quietly observe flurries of activity on the field. It appears to be athletic staff, a few varsity track team members, and general grounds, staff.

A relatively young girl sits quietly alone off to the left between us and the practice field, so I being feisty Ava, stroll over to say hello. Getting closer, I realize she seems a little off-kilter, so I haltingly greet her.

Smiling cutely, "Hi. My name's Ava, I'm 19 and will be a Duke Fresher this Fall."

I can almost feel her brain processing each question before she answers, her head tilting a little to the right.

Pricilla still with a fixed smile, "My Mom works at Duke and lets me hang out here because I'm happy looking at the people going every which way. Mom's work building is close, so she doesn't worry about me when I sit here, where I always wait for her."

I plan to ask Pricilla to sit with us but change my mind with her answer, "My three friends over there are also starting Duke this Fall, so can we sit together talking with you?"

Pricilla's smile widens cutely, but her words are stilted or measured, "Yes, Ava, please tell your friends to sit with us, because nobody ever talks to me but my Mom."

Waving Ellis, Sherry, and Dania over, I introduce them to Pricilla, adding she doesn't have any good friends to talk with.

As Pricilla talks and laughs with us, I carefully study her movement and speech patterns. Being a loner, staying mostly at home, I read a lot on the WEB and at various libraries. So, after we're talking with Pricilla for a while it hits home.

Pricilla's character and speech pattern or rhythm have been described, as a person suffering minimal or residual brain damage at birth. She's probably been labeled a as late developer physically, as well as a slow learner.

This type of behavior is mostly caused by an indefinite period of low or inadequate oxygen supply or acute short-term oxygen deprivation. Pricilla also has that kind of half-smile seemingly molded to her face, almost like having suffered a mini or neonatal stroke (

) at or during birth.

By physical appearance, I'd guess Pricilla's age at 12 or 13, but she's 15 years old, so to me, it all adds up. Some type of oxygen loss at birth is the likely reason for her deliberate speech pattern and late physical development.

I hear a faint, "Ava are you with us or lost in space?" coming from Ellis, now realizing I'd been zoning out in my little world thinking about Pricilla.

A moment later Pricilla giggles, "Are you lost, Ava?" the big eyes and full cute smile popping up again.

I smile, "Pricilla, we need something cool to drink, and this is our first time at the track. Is there a shop nearby that sells ice cream and other goodies?"

She's very excited, "Ava, my Mom is bringing us Creamsicles and will say hello to you all."

After quietly chatting with Pricilla for another 15 minutes, a regal woman, maybe 50-55, approaches us smiling.

We introduce ourselves, and I explain our seeing Pricilla sitting alone and we join her talking nearly an hour. The lady is a Vice Provost of Duke, Dr. Madeline Evans, which is very high in administration.

Dr. Evans brings a bag of six Creamsicles, which we eat while talking and getting to know each other. It's quite warm now, so the ice cream will start melting quickly.

Sherry nervously says, "I'm Sherry, maybe you know my Mom, Needra Jane Peirce, Associate Dean of the Law School."

Dr. Evans looks hard at Sherry, frowning, "Yes, I know Professor Peirce, helping to recruit her from Southern Cal, but didn't know she has a daughter?"

Sherry looks panicky, "Ava, please help me explain?"

I smile, "We four girls are incoming Duke Freshers this Fall. Ellis and I are Fulbright Scholars studying for accelerated MA degrees. Sherry's a Probationary Buick Scholar and must maintain a 3.70 GPA for this Fall term. Her academic scholarship extends for the full four years at that time.

"Dania's a special late admission, which Professor Pierce is spearheading. We're just back from Beaufort, near the Marine Biology campus, where we met Professor/Mom

"Sherry's an orphan from a young age, possibly birth, growing up in Group and Foster Homes in Kinston, NC. Some foster homes were not very healthy for a young girl, so she had to change schools fairly often. Sherry earned all As and a 4.00 GPA but lacks some required subjects for a Duke Fresher, so she is taking a few remedial courses this summer.

Reaching out to Dr. Evans, "Here's my ID, and Ellis as well as Sherry has theirs. It's gonna be very hot soon, is there a cool place inside where we can go with Pricilla and talk more?

"I have a West Campus married student apartment for the spring and summer, where she can visit with us for fun or if you have a busy day. You don't know us personally, but we're good girls and will love to hang out with Pricilla for a few hours anytime you're extra busy at work.

Life's going well for us, forming a nice bond with Pricilla, who's a darling girl. We have fun times with her on weekends and at least one day during the week.

We continue our daily runs, but our mornings are now at the Duke track field so Pricilla can watch and join us when we finish. We usually have lunch at a shop close by or at my apartment when Pricilla's Mom's schedule is heavy with late afternoon or early evening meetings.

It's now Pricilla's third time at our apartment, and she'll meet Mom Adair, and Needra tomorrow. They're arriving from Beaufort to visit with us for two days, and then quickly off to LA, and finish packing for Mom Needra's Durham move.

On their return to Durham, Moms Adair and Needra are stopping in Chicago for a few days where we'll join them for a mini vacation. We invite Pricilla to travel to Chicago with us, and she's over the top excited because her Mom says okay.

Our first plan is to fly to Chicago but we'll now travel by train so Pricilla can see everything on her first vacation with friends. We'll also take the train back to Durham with our Moms.
