Teresa, Jon, Katherine, and Chris ate dinner together that night, and Chris couldn't stop staring at the rest of his family. He had avoided being around the house much since the previous week, when so much was revealed to him about what they were all up to when Michael came to visit. It turned him on, but it also freaked him out, and now he didn't know what to do. Whereas he had always seen his mum and his sister as simple family members, he was now very aware of them as sexual beings. At the same time, he didn't want to let his mind go too far down that road for, well... reasons.
He finally spoke up. 'Mum, dad, what the hell is going on around here?'
Jon answered first. 'What are you talking about Chris? What do you mean?'
'I mean Kat having sex with your business associate in our living room while you watched. I mean her being engaged to Tom, but you and mum encouraging her to do things with other men...' Chris said, before getting cut off.
'Other people, Chris. Other people,' Teresa said.
'What the fuck?!? You mean you are encouraging Katherine to do sexual stuff with more than one man?' Chris demanded.
'Well, I suppose people is a plural form of man, but I mean not just men,' his mum said.
'WHAT? Are you bi, Katherine?' he said, turning to his sister. But Teresa cut in again.
'Katherine doesn't know if she's gay, straight, or bi, Chris. That's what this is all about. She got engaged to Thomas, which your dad and I think is too early, so we're just trying to get her to spread her wings a bit before getting tied down. We're doing her a service. Because if she still decides after all this to marry Thomas, then she'll at least be doing so knowingly.'
'So my sister is supposed to go out with a bunch of different people, of both sexes, so she can decide if she really wants to marry Tom?' Chris said.
'Simply put? Yes.' His mother answered. 'And since it's out in the open in this family now, I might as well tell you what your next task is, Katherine.'
'Oh, mum. I just got home from one of your dates. Do we have to talk about it now?' Katherine said, pleadingly.
'Yes, Katherine, because this one is going to take some time. We might as well get you started.'
'I've got to hear this,' Chris said, still combative, but simultaneously excited by the chance to hear details of what his sister was expected to do.

Jon looked on as his wife proceeded to tell their daughter what she had dreamed up this time. He let Teresa do it in both their names, but other than thinking in principle that it was a good idea for Katherine to have more experience, and guiltily feeling excited at the prospect of her getting into different sexual situations, he didn't really have any input into the ideas that Teresa was coming up with.
She began.
'Katherine, I want you to choose someone in your dance class to seduce.'
'What? They're all girls,' Katherine cried, her eyes wide with incredulity. 'I can't do that! Despite what I did with Monica...'
'Wait, what? You did something with Monica?' Chris said. 'Mum's friend Monica?' He couldn't believe it.
'Not now, Chris,' said Teresa. 'Yes Katherine. You can. It is important that you learn what you are capable of, and that includes both seduction, and sharing pleasure with other women. So I want you to seduce one of the girls in your dance class, and have at least one date with them.'
'But I don't even know if any of them are inclined that way. And even if I was able to find a girl in my class that is, and she agreed to go out with me, what do I do afterward? Just drop them after one date?'
'What you do afterward is up to you. But as for not knowing if any of your classmates are inclined that way, it is something you will have to figure out. I would say that any girl can be inclined that way with enough incentive,' Teresa said.
'Oh my god,' Katherine responded. 'This started badly, and it's getting worse.'
'Well, once you do it and we have had a talk about it, I promise you: that will be it,' her mother finished.

I didn't end up speaking with Katherine at all that weekend, and I was deeply disappointed not to have even met up with her for lunch at university on Monday. At least she sent me a text saying that she would be meeting with one of her tutors during her free time, so she wasn't ignoring me, but I knew that something was up, and missed the chance to talk.
I yearned for her, and every pretty girl I saw on campus just reminded me that for some reason, Katherine and I were just not connecting right now. I gave her space, based on what she had said to me before about needing to work something out, but it was hard. And heartbreaking. To add insult to injury, I knew that there would hardly be a chance for me to see her that week at all unless we made time between our different classes, as she had dancing four out of five days, and she tended to get home very late.
