"Rise and shine, maggot! Get your fat ass out of bed!"
"What the fuck?" Cynthia rolled over and rubbed her eyes, looking at Katie in the early morning gloom.
"Come on. We're going for a brisk walk this morning."
Uncomprehending, Cynthia repeated, "Brisk walk?" Then asked, "What time is it?"
"Time to get fit, fatty."
"You know that I'm going to kill you, right?"
"Well, porky, you have to get your fat ass out of bed to do that."
"Jeez," Cynthia groaned as she swung her feet off the bed and onto the floor. "Why are you being so mean to me?"
"I'm not being mean, I'm being helpful," Katie explained. "You've talked about getting more exercise for years and have done very little about it. I'm just motivating you."
"You suck."
Katie smiled. "I love you."
"I hate you," Cynthia groaned as she stood up. "Give me a couple of minutes."
"Don't be long. I'll be in the living room with Rio stretching and warming up." Katie slapped Cynthia on the butt as she trotted out of the bedroom.
Cynthia grunted in response as she began her slow shuffle to the bathroom.
Ten minutes later, Cynthia stumbled into the living room where Katie and Rio were impatiently waiting for her. Rio barked and ran to where his leash was hanging on the doorknob.
"Ready?" Katie asked in a much too cheerful voice.
"I still hate you."
"Great! Let's go!" Katie hooked up Rio and opened the door.
They walked in silence for a few minutes, then Cynthia spoke. "Why did you pick today to torture me?"
"Why
not
today?"
"I don't know," Cynthia answered. "I just wasn't ready for it."
"For what? A little walk? Trust me, this is
nothing
, Cynthia."
"There's gonna be more?"
"Yes.
Lots
more."
"Shit." Cynthia took a deep breath of the sweet early morning air. "We could have started tomorrow."
"The future depends on what you do today."
"If you're going to be quoting stupid motivational posters, I'm going home."
Katie frowned at Cynthia. "It was Mahatma Gandhi."
Cynthia grunted.
"Let's just enjoy the morning," Katie said as she continued walking with Rio trotting happily ahead of them.
They walked in silence for a few minutes, then Katie asked, "Cynthia? Do you remember when we first met?"
"Not really."
"It was at a summer day camp thing put on by the Recreation Department," Katie told her.
Cynthia remembered that and nodded. "In the field behind the high school."
"Yeah."
"Freya was there, too."
"Oh, you remember
her
but not me?" Katie asked.
Cynthia smiled. It was all starting to come back. "Well, anyone who's ever met Freya remembers her! Red hair, bossy loudmouth... Pretty... even back then."
"Even back then," Katie mused. "She was amazing even back then." Katie felt a wash of inferiority sweep over her that she hadn't felt in years.
"And there was this other girl," Cynthia continued. "She was kind of mousy and nervous. She'd never look anyone directly in the eyes. I think there might have been something wrong with her -- you know, mentally. Every single day she wore the same bright purple hat with a huge sunflower on the front of it. Weird kid."
Katie took Cynthia's hand and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"But she was super cute. And so kind and innocent." Then Cynthia added, "She was the girl you just wanted to hold and cuddle and protect from all the horrors of the world."
"I loved wearing that purple sunflower hat," Katie said. "And I'm sorry about everything you had to go through growing up. We never knew."
"Why would you? You and Frey were my escape. Sometimes -- most times -- you guys were the only bright spot in my life."
Rio started lagging behind, so Katie scooped the tiny dog up. "Okay. I'll carry you for a bit." The girls continued walking and Katie told Cynthia, "I don't think Rio is going to want to go back to Freya and Alex when they get home!"
