Lissette's phone buzzed, she glanced down on the dash of her Lexus and saw that it was her friend Chrissie. She pressed the green phone icon on the steering wheel to answer.
"This is Lissette!" She said in a perky voice.
"Hi Lissette!" Chrissie answered in an equally perky tone. "Have you got a sec?"
"Yup! I'm just coming home from a showing and I'm done for the day, I've got all the time in the world, what's up?"
"Perfect, first though, are you alone?" Chrissie said with in a lower tone.
"Yup, I'm all by my lonesome, why?" Lissette said, really curious now.
"Well, I wanted to talk to you about something..." Chrissie hedged. "It's kind of personal."
"No problem, what's going on? If you have any kind of problem, I'm here for you." Lissette said genuinely. They were not really close friends, but they saw each other socially with a group of women pretty often. And she'd had several one on one conversations with Chrissie over the years. They were definitely more than just acquaintances. Although she was probably ten years younger than Lissette, so they definitely were not as close as she was to the women in the group that were her age.
"Oh thank you!" Chrissie said, relieved that Lissette was being so friendly. "So you know I have a heart thing that's genetic right? Chrissie continued.
"Yeah, I remember that. It's such a shame, but you're a total trooper." Lissette said honestly. She had known Chrissie for probably ten years, and in that time, she'd heard of two surgeries she'd had. Those were the ones she knew about, but there might have been more. She'd seen her in her bathing suit a few times and was impressed that she rocked a bikini, even though she had a fairly noticeable scar on her chest near her neck. Other than that though, she was just about perfect. Wavy red hair, liquid blue eyes, a perfect complexion with just the right amount of little orange freckles. And legs and an ass that were firm and toned. Just then it dawned on Lissette that she probably stayed in good shape to keep her heart healthy.
"Lissette?" Chrissie said, thinking the call had dropped. Lissette realized she'd been quiet for a little too long, thinking about Chrissie's appearance.
"Yeah, sorry. Traffic is a little crazy. Like I said, you are such a trooper and it sucks you have to deal with that."
"Thank you." Chrissie paused again. Thinking hard about her words. "So, I am going in for a surgery tomorrow, and it's a risky one."
"Yeah?" Lissette said sweetly.
"I won't go into too much detail, but if it's successful, my quality of life will be much better and the amount of surgeries I will have to have will go way down. Like maybe one every ten years."
"That's great!" Lissette said. "But why is it risky?"
"They all come with a risk of, you know..." Chrissie paused. "Not waking up after? You know?" Chrissie said hoping Lissette would understand.
"Yeah." Lissette said soberly.
"This one is also kind of the last one I can have before my quality of life really drops off and I don't have any energy, it's a lot." Chrissie said, her voice cracking a little.
"Oh, you poor thing, what are you, thirty five?"
"Thank you, and I'm thirty two. But I've been dealing with it for nearly thirty years." Chrissie said, sort of feistily.
"You go girl." Lissette said, picking up on her return to positive thinking. "So what can I do for you?"
"I'm going to let you in on a little secret."
"What is it?" Lissette said, once again, super curious.
"You know when we're out and I'm drinking?"
"Yeah, we've hung out tons of times."
"Well, I'm not really drinking. it's just sprite, or coke, or a virgin chocolate-tini."
"That makes sense, now that I think about it. I never would have guessed though." Lissette thought about how many times she'd been a little too tipsy around Chrissie. "Wait, I didn't say anything rude when I was drunk did I? I'm so sorry if I did."
"Actually, quite the opposite. This year, the night before Thanksgiving when everyone was out at the bars we ran into each other really late in the evening. Do you remember?"
Lissette had been to several bars that night and was a little fuzzy on the details, particularly later in the evening. But she did remember seeing Chrissie. "Yeah, it was at the Steam Punk Cantina, right?"
"That's right!" Chrissie said, happy that she remembered.
"You were wearing that cute, red turtle-neck sweater, and the plaid skirt. I remember thinking how cute you looked. Like a sexy schoolgirl!"
"You didn't just think it," Chrissie said, "you told me how cute I looked." Chrissie continued, butterflies forming in her stomach. "Then you grabbed my butt, and your hand maybe went a little farther than I expected."
Lissette had a foggy memory of this and could feel her face getting hot. She glanced in the rear view mirror, she was crimson. "Chrissie, I'm so sorry, I was kinda drunk." Lissette stammered.
"I know, I got kind of a surprised look on my face, and then some other people showed up and we just kind of, you know..."
