--- KEEPING THEA WARM ---

"Are you cold?" came Thea's squeaky voice from the other bed across the dorm room. The creaky bedspring mattress made its noisy complaint as the freckled girl pushed herself up on her elbows, and with doe-like eyes, stared at Lovisa timidly from her side of the room.

"No," the sophomore student replied curtly, keeping her eyes on the page. However, her forehead wrinkled as her concentration was disturbed, knowing full well that the conversation wasn't over - and the book which had held her spellbound a few seconds prior lost its magical mesmerization as Lovisa's heart began to accelerate, unable to resist what she knew was coming.

"Are you sure?" Thea pressed, followed by the sound of her slippers padding softly across the floorboards. She stood by her roommate's bed, peeking over at what Lovisa was reading. Her stance was timid and unsure. She clutched a thin nightgown around her small frame, her curly hair tousled into untidy locks about her face.

"I am indeed."

A pause. A moment of silence. But Thea remained standing there, a bemused look on her cherubim features, so Lovisa sighed and continued: "Why? Are you cold?"

"Yeah." The girl wriggled from one foot to the other.

Lovisa groaned, putting her book down on her chest. "Thea, I adore you, but don't you think this is getting weird?"

"Sorry," the younger girl muttered, looking more lost than ever. She picked at her nails nervously and rocked back and forth on her heels. "It's much warmer in your bed," she mumbled under her breath.

During their first year at Marbella Springs University, they'd slowly developed a friendship. Thea was a bit of an oddball, her social skills lacking somewhat, often misunderstanding others' intentions. At first, Lovisa had pitied the quiet girl - but over time, they had grown to understand each other, and their friendship had strengthened over the months that followed. Now, the both of them sophomores, they had selected one another as roommates. For the most part, it worked well - the two of them balancing each other out: Lovisa the social butterfly, and Thea the quiet introvert. Yet lately - the past week especially - Thea's behavior had begun to make Lovisa a little bit uneasy. And confused.

"Can we.. Can I please get in with you?" Thea asked, fidgeting. She made no effort to hide the flush that crept over her cheeks as her big eyes looked down into Lovisa's face, her lips pursed together as though awaiting rebuke once more. When Lovisa didn't answer her, she added: "Just for tonight?"

"Hmm, where have I heard that before?" Lovisa said with a mocking, sardonic tone. "Oh yeah, from YOU! Literally last night."

"Please," Thea added in a whispering voice, as if saying it softer would make Lovisa relent more easily. And she always did relent. Four nights in a row, Thea had been snuggled up against her side, holding on to her through the night. Not once had the little woman seemed particularly chilly during these late-night visits, which was in part why Lovisa found them strange and disconcerting.

"If you are scared of the dark, we can just leave a small light on." Lovisa rubbed the bridge of her nose in exasperation, but it didn't do much to ease her tension. Her hands felt a little clammy and she forced them under the warm blanket for a moment while making an effort to breathe steadily. Could she handle another another night of the smaller girl lying beside her with those innocent eyes staring up at her in the darkness without doing something she might regret? "Is that it? You're scared?"

Thea shook her head silently, but said nothing. Just stood there, staring awkwardly. Waiting.

A frustrated noise escaped the blonde woman's lips. Inside, Lovisa was torn. Thea was like a cuddly ball of fluff, one that had burrowed into every cell of Lovisa's body. And then there was the matter of how sweet she smelled; the lingering scent of rosewater on her skin and hair. No perfume either, just pure Thea. If Lovisa was honest with herself, that was why the entire reason she was so defensive and reluctant about the whole ordeal. For how many more nights could she have Thea wrapped around her without being tempted beyond measure by those pillowy lips? But Lovisa was straight.. Wasn't she?

She swallowed hard. "Fine. I don't mind if you want to get warm." She pulled the covers up and patted the empty space beside her - and Thea, all shy smiles, clumsily kicked off her slippers and got in.

"Thanks!" The girl beamed, burrowing into the blankets and tucking herself snuggly against Lovisa's side. She held onto her roommate's midsection, but made no further attempt at intimacy beyond that.

"You are hopeless." Lovisa spoke the words fondly, as she leaned back against her pillow and picked up her book once more. Within minutes, Thea had fallen asleep.

They remained like that for another fifteen minutes, until Lovisa found it difficult to focus on the words in front of her. Instead of reading, she would gaze at Thea's petite form; long lashes brushing her cheeks, mouth slightly ajar, one arm around her friend's body as if they were lovers. For a brief moment, Lovisa wondered if the little lady would have cuddled up with someone else if she were unavailable? If Thea had chosen a different roommate? The thought hurt more than it should have. Perhaps it was a selfish way of looking at it, but Lovisa took a certain pleasure in knowing she was able to provide comfort to the young woman in a world that otherwise seemed cruel and harsh towards people like her.

With a sigh, she snapped her book shut and threw her reading glasses aside. Carefully, she reached over towards the nightstand and clicked the lamp off. Darkness filled the room. And in the faint moonlight seeping through the window, Lovisa's eyes lingered on the sleeping form beside her; slowly tracing Thea's sweet curves - allowing her imagination to fill in all the delicate details that couldn't be seen in the shadows of the night, or under the covers. Then, with a smile tugging at the corners of her lips, Lovisa pulled her friend a little tighter against her body, and closed her own eyes, ready to drift off into sleep.

That's when the little noise escaped Thea's lips. The softest of moans. Was it even a moan? Or just a tiny mumble in her sleep? Either way, Lovisa felt something stir deep within her - an ember of arousal that started burning slow and steady; like kindling catching flame. Quickly, however, the feeling was paired with guilt and shame. To be lusting over her friend, when she was so defenseless - sleeping next to Lovisa, unaware of how her shy touches awakened desires withing Lovisa that she tried desperately to keep at bay. Even through the fabric of her friend's nightgown, the blonde woman could feel the softness of those breasts pressing against her body. The way Thea held on so tightly, even in her sleep, as if it was Lovisa that anchored her - grounded her - in a universe full of chaos.

"Next time you ask if I'm feeling cold," Lovisa thought, "... I'm just going to say yes."

--- 2 ---

Clutching her textbook and notes in her arms, Lovisa hurried out of the lecture hall. Heavy clouds hung over campus, the slate-grey sky an ominous warning that rain could fall at any moment. The wind whistled between the old buildings as the sophomore girl made her way across the courtyard, attempting to stifle a yawn. Her body craved the beans. Coffee had been her sustenance of choice since autumn arrived. Sleep deprivation clouded her mind and dulled her senses, and it had only gotten worse since cute little Thea had begun her nightly cuddle-routine.

It wasn't that the presence of the other woman made Lovisa sleep any worse, per se. On the contrary - once she actually managed to fall asleep, the warmth and sweet scent of her friend lulled Lovisa into a deep slumber, both undisturbed and unplagued by nightmares. But falling asleep in the first place, when indecent thoughts swirled through her head, had proven to be challenging.

The only coffee shop that was physically on campus grounds was located just behind the administration building, and run by the student council and volunteers. Sweetgum trees, with foliage in red and orange, decorated the brick path leading there - and the fragrances of autumn mixed with that of freshly baked pastries as Lovisa walked up the pathway. Maybe she ought to treat herself to a sticky bun to give her body some sugar-therapy? As she wrestled with that decision, her thoughts were suddenly interrupted.

"Lo-Lo!" a familiar voice called out, stopping Lovisa short. She spun around, and spotted Felicia approaching her with a saunter in her walk, and a plastic coffee cup in hand - though the content could barely be called coffee anymore, most of it being syrups and cream. Felicia was the kind of woman who demanded your undivided attention at all times; beautiful, confident, sassy and with eyes that left no doubt about where you stood in her heart. She referred to her friends - male or female - as 'her darlings', and as she had a lot of friends, she also had a reputation of having a lot of darlings. "Coming to Derek's party tonight?"

The party. It had completely slipped her mind, with midterms just around the corner, and Thea occupying more of her thoughts than she wanted to admit - even to herself. "Oh, right. Uhm.. Yeah, I'll be there."

"Great," Felicia chirped, "Bring your roomie as well, m'kay?"

To take Thea along was not likely to happen. She'd ask, of course - to be polite, mostly - but she knew ahead of time that her friend would say no. Thea loathed social events and hated crowds. Whenever Lovisa attempted to introduce her to people, they never really seemed to connect. "I'll try, but don't hold your breath."

As she approached Thea - perched in front of her computer screen with her headphones on, playing her video game - Lovisa did so with caution. The little bundle of nerves got easily startled when people were sneaking up behind her, especially when she was focused on something else.

"Hey Thea," she tried from across the room, raising her voice to be heard over the rattle of gunshots and explosions that was likely bombarding her ears from within the headset, Valorant being Thea's game of choice. The colourful characters on-screen were engaged in a life-and-death struggle with one another.

"Hmm?" The girl was concentrating, biting her lower lip. She did not turn around.

"There's a party tonight.." Lovisa started tentatively. "Derek's place.. Derek Hollander, if you know him?" She paused, but there was no reaction; the only sign that her roommate was paying attention to what she was saying was the slight furrow of her brow. "Uhm.. I'm going. Do you wanna come along?"

She got no response until after Thea's game round was over. "A party?" She turned around in her swivel chair, removing the headphones from just the one ear, looking curious. "With you?"

Lovisa chuckled, shrugging. "Yeah. Me and some of my other friends."

Thea wrinkled her nose, a deep contemplation taking hold of her features as she sat there with her hands in her lap. "Would you stay by my side the whole time?"

"Of course," Lovisa replied easily. "I promise."

With a pensive smile, Thea nodded. "I suppose I could go then," she muttered under her breath, seemingly more to herself than to Lovisa. Then the next round of Valorant started and she gave her friend an apologetic look. "Sorry, it's online, so I can't pause it. When do we leave?"

"Hmm, maybe around nine?"

"'Kay!" Thea put her headphones back on properly and turned back to the screen, and within seconds she was back to pushing buttons with the ferocity of a woman possessed. Lovisa shook her head, an amused smile on her lips. In truth, she was quite surprised that Thea had even entertained the idea of attending such an event at all. It was not the first time she had asked, but usually the girl found excuses - doubly so when not approached well in advance, as spontaneity was hardly her style.

A steamy shower later - looking out over the clutter of cosmetics, perfume bottles and skincare products in front of her - Lovisa paused for a moment to really digest just how different she was from her friend. Where the blonde woman would sometimes take hours to get ready to step foot outside, Thea barely cared about her appearance at all. The chaos upon the bathroom vanity was all her own doing, and some of her beauty products had even spilled on over onto Thea's side of the sink. But they made sacrifices for one another without a second thought, and all of Lovisa's worries about sharing living space with someone else had quickly been erased during the first week of term.

At half an hour until party time, Lovisa was nearly done with all of her preparations. She sat by her dresser, looking in the small handmirror as she put on lipstick and applied mascara. The outfit she had chosen was nothing special; just some black jeans, boots and a loose-fitted white blouse. It had vague country-girl vibes but in that modern sort of way.

Thea had not moved an inch. "Hey, uhm.. We're leaving soon. I'm done in the bathroom if you want to shower or something. Do you want help choosing an outfit, maybe?" Lovisa tried as she put down her makeup tools.

Thea paused her Youtube video, blinking her eyes several times. "I showered this morning already. And.. The outfit I'm wearing won't work?" Her features became anxious. "Oh. Oh no."

"No no no!" Lovisa exclaimed with a laugh. "You look fine! It's just that.." Lovisa was searching for the right words, having to admit that Thea would have looked more attractive if she were to actually try a bit harder. "People dress up a little at parties like these," she finished lamely, as her fingers reached for her silver earrings. "You know, wear something pretty. Do their hair and make-up a bit differently than usual."

Thea took a long, hard look at her sweatpants and oversized hoodie, her eyes questioning. Then, without warning, she stood from her computer chair, crossed the room and began to dig through the wardrobe. She quickly seemed to find something that put a satisfied smile on her face, before she disappeared into the bathroom and shut the door behind her. Lovisa sighed. Perhaps she should have kept her mouth shut?

When Thea finally emerged from the bathroom - clad in an old-fashioned dress that didn't show an ounce of skin above the neck, with her hair brushed neatly but otherwise plain as can be - she grinned at Lovisa. "Pretty good, right?"

Uncertain of the proper response, Lovisa offered nothing but a nod in response. The outfit felt like it would have been vintage already by the time Lovisa's mother went to college, but somehow it suited her friend quite well. Innocent and homely were the two adjectives that sprung to mind when looking at the girl. "I like it," she said at last.

Thea smiled so big it reached all the way to her eyes, giving Lovisa a twinkly gaze that made her insides turn warm. "Then I'm happy with it. Shall we go then?"

Crane Street was a mere ten-minute walk from the dorms, and that was at a leisured pace. From all the way down the road, one could already hear the heavy thud of bass-boosted music blaring through an open window or two, followed by shouts and laughter.

"Seems pretty loud," Thea commented with apprehension in her voice, and the discomfort in her eyes only grew as they got closer and closer. "How do people talk if the music's that loud?"

Lovisa shrugged. "You adapt pretty fast," she reasoned, thinking of the countless house parties she had been to during her freshman year. A gnawing feeling in her gut, however, informed her that perhaps Thea would not adjust so easily. More than anything, she wanted her friend to have an enjoyable time and come out of her shell a little. The young woman could stand to use a couple more friends. "But we don't have to stay for too long," she added, and tried to give Thea what she hoped was a comforting smile.

Thea nodded, but didn't seem reassured. "I don't want to spoil your evening," she said. However, only a few steps later, she wrinkled her nose and looked up at her friend. "Actually, uhm.. Maybe I should just go home, because-"

"Hey!" Lovisa stopped short and took Thea by the shoulders. "You're going to be fine. It's just a party, nothing weird is going to happen," she soothed in a calming tone. "And I promised to stay by your side as much as possible, right? So.. Just give it a chance."

Thea's face made it clear she wasn't fully convinced. "What if I embarrass you?" she mumbled, glancing away.

"No way! My friends will love you," Lovisa insisted. She tugged lightly on Thea's hand, pulling her down the street once more - and though the smaller girl seemed tense at first, she quickly interlinked their fingers and held tight, her hand warm against Lovisa's own.

Soon enough, they stood on the front porch of Derek Hollander's residence - a mansion by Marbella Springs' standards. His parents hade made their fortune in Silicon Valley in the nineties, and though they got out before the true stock-pump started happening, they had enough money to live a lavish life. The porch was lined with an ivy trellis, and there were twinkling fairy lights along the railings, casting the yard in a gentle glow. A knocker in the shape of a bull's head adorned the massive front door, the surface peeled from years of wear.

There was laughter on the other side, and Lovisa pulled the door open without announcing their arrival; revealing a group of people in varying states of intoxication. Piles of empty beer cans decorated the dining room table. The scent of smoke hung in the air, mingling with strong perfumes and colognes. Though the night was young, a few guests were already making out in the corners, kissing so feverishly it made Thea blush just to look at them.

"Welcome!" Derek said cheerily, offering a lopsided grin as he staggered over to greet the newcomers. He leaned on the wall to steady himself. "Who's your friend?" he slurred his words and gave Thea a lazy once-over.

"Derek, this is Thea, my roommate," Lovisa introduced her proudly. "Thea, meet my friend Derek."

The man nodded, then quickly pointed down the hall. "Poison's in the kitchen. Beer, rum, vodka, whatever you want! My 'casa' is your 'casa' as well," he grinned, butchering both the phrase and the pronounciation. Then a new song began playing, and his face lit up. "Woah, I love this song!" With that, he stumbled back towards the living room to join some other revelers whom seem to share both his enthusiasm and his state of inebriation.

The two girls exchanged a glance. "He's a bit of a character, but he means well," Lovisa said with a chuckle, before gently nudging Thea towards the kitchen. "What would you like to drink?"

"What?"

The music was loud enough to drown out her friend's question, so Lovisa wanted to repeat herself, leaning close to the smaller woman. She moved the hazel tresses from her friend's cheek and behind her ear, which made Thea look at her with an adorable kind of fluster - and suddenly, Lovisa forgot what she was about to say. All she could focus on were those big eyes; the freckles across Thea's nose, the plump cheeks, the slender neck.. And her lips. So inviting. Soft, supple, slightly moist - and Lovisa ached to kiss her. Even though she had grown up in a reserved and traditional household, where girls weren't meant to kiss other girls, something about Thea awakened desires within her she hadn't been prepared for.
