I was on my way back from dropping the kids off at school and was about to go find a cafΓ© to do a little work, when I ran into my friend Mary. She was always good for a laugh, however today, Mary's face was flushed, and she had a manic look in her eyes. "Are you going to the cafΓ© for the choosing?"
"What cafΓ©? What choosing?" I demanded.
"Oh my god, you don't know!" Mary said horrified before she glanced down at her watch, "I have a spare ticket. Follow me!" She screamed before she took off at a near dead sprint.
Five minutes later Mary and I were stood shoulder-to-shoulder with fifty other women in the back room of the cafΓ© that all the mums from the school frequent. I recognized several of the other mums. Some gave me a smile and waved, while other just kept their eyes down in shame. And I knew there were exactly fifty women in the room, for when we entered, we were given wooden spoons with numbers on them. I was given the last spoon, number fifty.
Usually, the backroom at the cafΓ© was a light and sunny place, but today all the windows and blinds had been shut which gave the place a dark and sweaty smell. Also, there was a nervous hum as all the women stood around a large table that sat empty in the middle of the room.
"What the fuck is going on Mary?" I hissed.
"You know Lilly, the owner of the cafΓ©, and how she is a lesbian right?"
I hadn't known that Lilly was a lesbian until now, but I nodded my head anyways.
