Opening her eyes somewhat hesitantly -- it was a bright morning in Amarillo -- Jenny looked around the room. The tequila bottle on top of the TV was empty, as were the beer bottles scattered all around; but though she had done her part, she actually felt pretty good. Hana had made sure she drank water and brushed her teeth before turning in.
Only after a minute did she notice that Hana was not in bed with her, though Donna and Haley were still curled up together in the other bed. Soon after the door opened and Hana came in bearing coffee for everyone. The plan was that they would take their gear over to the nightclub where the show was that night, then set up and have a rehearsal. This was the first chance they'd had in a while to work on new material.
Hana roused Donna and Haley and they all took turns showering and sipping coffee. Jenny was faced with the fact that she didn't have much in the way of clothes. The leather skirt could be worn indefinitely, but for the time being she put on her jeans. Her top would do for another day, after which Hana pointed out that they had a big box of t-shirts in the van.
On the way to the van they grabbed more coffee and pastries, and all were in high spirits as they headed across town to the club. As arranged, the manager was there to let them in; he pointed them to the stage, showed them how to lock up when they were done, and left.
Jenny helped Haley carry her drums in and sat watching, fascinated, as the three band members quickly and efficiently set up. Soon they were tuning, then Hana launched into the new song she had played by herself the night before. Haley came in with a rhythm, and slowly Donna began to piece together a bassline; the song didn't really need much, so she kept it minimal, deftly staying out of the singer's way.
When the song was finished Hana nodded her head and said, "Not bad." They ran through it one more time and declared it done. Then Hana began to play another new piece that was in a completely different vein -- a raucous, surf-style instrumental.
"What do you call this?" asked Donna.
Smiling, Hana looked over at Jenny and said, "I call it... umm... 'Eyes and Thighs.'"
Donna and Haley huddled for a minute and then came in behind Hana with a big, swinging, funky beat. Jenny got up to get some water, and as she walked she couldn't help but dance a little. When she came back Hana was staring at her with a cocked head. Stopping the song for a moment Hana said to her bandmates, "Hey, do we have that tambourine?"
"I think so," said Haley, who began to rummage through a case, emerging a few seconds later with a tambourine in hand. Hana took it and handed it to Jenny.
"Play with us," she said, so matter-of-factly that Jenny had no chance to argue. She started the song again, a little faster than before, and the band kicked in behind her. After taking a few seconds to orient herself, Jenny began to shake the tambourine, matching Haley's rhythm as best she could.
Hana started improvising over the established groove, and for a while the music seemed to levitate. It felt to Jenny like it went on for hours, though in reality it was probably more like ten minutes. When it was over all four of them were sweaty and flushed, almost like they'd just had sex, which in a way they sort of had.
