05 Yoga Class and Lesbian Affirmation
Middle-aged and elderly ladies chatted, exuding whiffs of expensive perfume. Sunitra noticed her and called: "Elizabeth, so good of you to join us. Ladies, Elizabeth is my new disciple, and will be helping around the school. Now, five minutes to get ready. Elizabeth, you found the way? Tell me quickly, have you ever done any yoga?"
The blonde girl nodded. "Yes, in summer camp at Indian Rock. There was an instructor, Denzil something, who gave lessons. He was awfully strict, but I enjoyed it so. But afterwards when I wanted to continue Mother said it was of the devil."
"Denzil Vernon? A good teacher, I know him. You liked him?"
"Oh, he was great, and so... I mean he was a good teacher."
"And good looking too. I bet the girls swooned over him."
Elizabeth laughed a little shakily. "Yes, he was rather dreamy, and they giggled behind his back. Do you know him?"
"I do. Now, I want you to observe and to do what I ask you to. Perhaps to illustrate a position. And you can help me tidy up afterwards. Can you stay for two sessions? I have a healing meditation afterwards."
Elizabeth quickly fell into the rhythm of the class. She found the basic movements familiar, and the more advanced ones challenging but not too hard. She was called forwards a few times to demonstrate a movement, with Sunitra guiding her, rearranging an arm or leg. At the end of the class she felt warm and at peace. Then Sunitra asked her to collect all the scattered mats, roll them and pack them into racks. "Keep six of them out, please, and arrange them in a circle here. There we are. Now I want you to meet our participants. Vina, Sally, Karen and Charmaine. Ladies, this is Elizabeth. To start we will do a few vigorous sun salutations to get the blood flowing. After that we will to four slow ones, to slow the body down and guide it into control patterns."
Elizabeth followed the others in the exercise while looking at them surreptitiously. Sally and Charmaine were middle-aged, athletic and trim, exuding health and purpose. Karen was a few years older than she was, had a serious business-like look, and every movement told of determination and drive. Vina, on the other hand, seemed listless and drawn.
They arranged themselves in pairs, Vina with Sunitra, Sally and Charmaine paired off, and Karen faced her. On Sunitra's instruction each took the other's left arm in her right hand, resting the fingers on the pulse.
"Now we are going to go into meditation. While keeping awareness of your partner's pulse and awareness, we begin to breathe deeply but slowly, visualizing the clean air coursing down the spine, clearing out negative thoughts and ideas, suffusing it with a gentle light. And we exhale, bringing out the tensions and evil."
Sunitra guided them into building the light in the spine until it lit up all the chakras, flowering as a crown of light above the head. "Now visualize this clear, healing light descending into the body, lighting up the brain, outlining its contours, seeking out any damage or wrong. Then we gently recall it to healing itself, clearing out any negative growths and disease. And we accept it as it is."
She talked them through the body, visualizing each organ, each part. They ended the session with a meditation on visualizing the healing light spreading to the neighbourhood, the suburb, the town.
