A Love So Beautiful
Chapter 2: New York - Reunion
I was sitting on the bed, wearing a nightshirt, no bra, and boy shorts, commando, reviewing my latest writing of my new book, checking grammar, left-out words, etc. Just standard stuff a writer does with their manuscript, when the room phone rang. The phone ringing spooked me, breaking the quiet I had been ensconced while reviewing, with soft classical music in the background.
I answered it, "Hello."
"It's your double occupant. I tried your phone, but it went straight to voicemail."
"Hi Charlie! Yeah, sorry, I turned my phone off, letting it recharge, and letting me get some writing done without interruptions."
"No problem, the desk clerk let me use the in-house phone. I have my key and am on the way up."
"Great!"
Charlie giggled, and said, "You might want to turn on your phone."
"Why?"
"Just do it. I'll be there, toot sweet."
"Looking forward to seeing you."
"As am I. Bye"
Before I could say goodbye, the phone went dead.
I saved my work on my laptop, closed it, stood up and stretched for a moment, putting the laptop on one of the end tables in the room.
I walked over to the nightstand by the bed, grabbed my fully recharged phone and turned it on. The notification sound began to chime and continued chiming for several minutes. I was apparently flooded with calls and/or texts. Before I even had a chance to look at what was flooding my phone I heard a knock on the door.
I opened the door and there stood Charlie, with an overnight bag, a clothes bag, and a briefcase slung over her shoulder.
"My hands were a bit occupied, so I knocked with my foot."
"I can see that," I swung the door open wide, "Come in, come in."
"Thanks."
Charlie came in the room, looked around the room, gave a little whistle, and said, "Wow, very nice."
I just smiled and nodded.
Charlie walked over to one of the small couches in the room, putting her briefcase on the floor, and then placing her clothes bag on the couch, along with her overnight bag.
I looked at her, smiling at me, and we both walked toward each other into a passionate kiss and hug.
When we broke the kiss, I said, "I turned on my phone and it is flooded with notifications from all the chiming it was doing. I haven't even had a chance to look at what all is on it."
Charlie snickered, with a big smile on her face, "You probably want to take a look at it."
Just as I picked up my phone a call came across, my mother, just great. Don't get me wrong, I love my mom, we get along very well, I just didn't need to hear from her right now.
I looked over at Charlie, rolled my eyes, and said, "It's my mother."
Charlie smirked, and said, "Answer the call."
I gave her a look, hit the accept button, and said, "Hi mom."
"Rebecca," Oh no something is up, my mother rarely calls me Rebecca, usually just Bec, "I have called you two times and they both went straight to voicemail."
"I was doing some writing and had my phone turned off and recharging."
"Where are you?"
"I'm in New York City."
"Did you see Charlie today?"
Now that was a question from out of the blue, it was certainly not a question I had even thought would be asked.
"Yes. Why?"
"No. Hang on for a moment," I put the phone on speaker, "Mom, you are on speaker now. Charlie is here with me right now. Please repeat what you just said."
"Have you looked at your website, or Charlie's? Charlie's there?"
"Yes, Charlie is here."
"Hi Charlie,"
"Hi Carol."
"Where is here?"
"I have a room at the Plaza, and she is here."
"The Plaza! Why in the world are at such an expensive hotel?"
"Well, not that is really any of your business, but I felt like splurging, if that is okay."
Another voice came across the line, "Hi Bec, nothing at all is wrong with pampering oneself sometimes. Hi Charlie!"
Charlie had pulled her laptop from her briefcase and had opened it, "Hi Alex!"
My mom said, "Oops, I forgot to tell you I have you on speaker also. Sorry."
"Hi Alex," I said.
Charlie turned her laptop so I could see the screen. It was on her website, with a picture of our overly passionate kiss at the exhibit earlier.
"Shit."
"What?"
"Charlie just showed me her website and there is a picture of us kissing at her exhibition earlier today."
Alex chimed in, "A very hot kiss!" chuckling.
Charlie, laughing, "Alex, it was that!"
I rolled my eyes at Charlie again, "Is this why you called mom?"
"Of course it is! You and Charlie haven't seen each other in like eight years, and now you are lip locked on the web! What is going on?"
Charlie was giggling constantly now, her eyes bright with mirth.
"I went to see her exhibition and when we saw each other, it just happened. And, I have absolutely no regrets at all that it happened!"
I could hear Alex laughing in the background, and then she said, "Whoop, whoop!"
That made Charlie burst out laughing, loudly.
"Charlie and Alex, it is not funny, this is serious," my mom said.
While I partially agreed with her, I also thought it was damn funny at the same time.
"Mom, it really is pretty funny."
"Have you two looked at your sites and all the comments?"
"I have not looked at mine, but I see Charlie's and a bunch of comments underneath the pic. What are they saying? Bad things about it?"
"Overwhelmingly no. But there are a lot of questions and comments about you two being together again! Is that what is going on?"
Charlie and I locked eyes. Her eyes had a questioning look in them. I am sure mine did also. I had not even broached the subject with Charlie, but that is exactly why I was in New York.
"The subject has not even come up between us. So, I cannot answer your question."
Alex yelled in the background, "Say yes! Say hell yes! You two love each other, you know it. You both need the other in your life. Seriously!"
I sighed, "Mom, Alex, now is not the time for this discussion."
Alex replied, in a calmer manner, "You are right. You two need to talk to each other. It's a big decision, and one that needs to be made between you two. I hope it is something you both want to talk about. Take your time. Talk to each other. Look at your lives and decide what your future should be. I hope you decide you need to be together, which is obviously how I feel about it, but what I think and want, really has no bearing on your decision. That is all up to you two."
My mom added, "I agree, strongly. I am sorry if I came across as a mad woman," a little giggle at that comment.
I snickered, "It's okay mom. I am, after all, your daughter, and you just want the best for me, and Charlie."
Charlie added, "It is nice to hear your thoughts on the whole thing, but Bec and I have to make that decision, and that may take us a while."
