"Don't get on at your dad" Lucianne said to her stepdaughter Melody. She must have said it ten times a day for the last few years. Since the young redhead had started to try and spread her wings, she had begun to increasingly grate against her father's old-fashioned outlook.
Unlike many of her friends who found themselves with stepparent's, Melody actually got on really well with Lucianne. She had been part of her life for the last nine years and being a good ten years younger than Melody's father was a bit more in tune with the needs of someone about to leave her teen years behind. Lucianne was regularly seen acting as an arbiter between father and daughter, even if she didn't agree with the younger woman's motives, she had a special way of steering both of them to find a middle ground. Yes, she could easily work her new husband to her way of thinking but she also put up a valid argument when she considered Melody to be out of line.
Today saw her trot out the regular line as Melody stomped into the kitchen having had the latest disagreement with her father. She knew she'd find her stepmother either in the kitchen or beside the pool out back. "What's the matter this time?" Lucianne asked knowing she'd need all her arbiter skills again.
Over the course of the next twenty minutes, Melody explained it was her turn to hold a party with her little group of friends but her father flatly refused to let her have one at their house. She reached over to her stepmother's idle hand and placed hers upon it as she asked, "Could you have a word with him for me?" Ever since Lucianne had been introduced as her father's new wife, Lucianne had managed to win her stepdaughter over easily by pulling her into a loving hug and so it wasn't unusual to find Melody walking up to Lucianne and wrapping her arms around the older woman - she was certainly a whole lot more maternal than her birth mother had ever been.
Lucianne winced at her stepdaughter's request "A party really, in fairness I think I share your fathers' concerns. The sort of party I'd go to at your age could easily descend into complete chaos."
Melody pouted her bottom lip out as she replied "You've picked me up from other such parties, you know what they are like. It's more akin to the dinner parties that you and Dad hold -- you know the ones where I have to sit quietly occasionally laughing at unfunny jokes and be the obedient child to be wheeled out whenever there were important people present."
Lucianne leant forward and kissed Melody on the forehead saying "Don't get on at your father, his job requires him to entertain people. If it's any consolation I find some of them just as tedious as you." The two giggled in their all-enveloping hug as the older woman pondered "Hmmm, maybe I could encourage your father to take me away for a romantic weekend."
Melody's eyes lit up at the prospect as she squeezed her stepmom tighter and said, "You're the best."
Sadly, things hadn't turned out quite as everyone hoped/expected. Yes, Robert had taken his wife away for a nice weekend retreat and yes, Melody had been able to arrange a party while the house was empty. Sadly, things had reduced to the type of chaos both Lucianne and perhaps more appropriately her husband, had foreseen. He could forgive someone breaking the glass vase he had been presented with at the golf club, he even shrugged off the beer stain on the cream carpet as he was certain it would clean out. What got his dander up was the discovery that someone had vomited in his beloved fish tank -- that really was a step too far.
Melody found her father growling at her every time their paths crossed. She had been appropriately cowed the first few times but then she began to bite back at him which only served to make the situation worse. Her brunette stepmother found herself playing referee on more than one argument, Lucianne found her sunbathing session being interrupted by Melody slumping in the sun lounger next to her while in the background the sound of doors being slammed and her husband's car speeding off and spitting gravel all over the place; Lucianne already knew he had an afternoon at the golf club on the plan.
Melody's expression demonstrated that she and her father had obviously had words again. Looking over the rim of her sunglasses she said, "You can hardly blame your father, especially after the fish tank."
"But... but... but..." Melody spluttered.
Lucianne quietened her with a raised hand as she swung herself round to look directly at her stepdaughter "Now don't get on at your dad. What did you think his reaction would be? You know how he is, if you play the meek subservient daughter for a few weeks, he'll blow himself out." Melody huffed at the sense that the older woman was talking and so Lucianne pressed on "What were you up to instead of supervising who your guests were bringing along with them?"
Melody pulled a strange expression "Well... hmmmm... I errrrr..." The older woman stayed quiet and just raised a questioning eyebrow. Melody smiled nervously and sat there gaping "I... I... I..."
"Oh, come on, spit it out" prompted Lucianne.
"I'm not sure how you're going to take this" Melody began but then clammed up. Lucianne just sat there tapping her foot. After another huff and deep sigh, the young woman spat out in a single breath "I was tied up upstairs and couldn't see what was actually going on downstairs."
Lucianne decided to tug Melody's chain when she asked with a mock shocked expression, "Oh no, you found the restraints that your father and I use."
Melody looked confused "What? No, not that kind of tied up... you mean you two? EYUW" Just then she lifted her head and caught sight of Lucianne sniggering which caused her to relax -- perhaps a little too much when she subsequently blurted out "Oh you. If you must know I was upstairs with someone." She knew she had gone too far when Lucianne's expression changed to shock. "Oooops sorry, I didn't mean to say that.
