Chapter 15
I couldn't believe it... It was too good to be true... Juri was still here... And if that wasn't enough, we could now access her through social media.
Still, I couldn't help but wonder how she felt about me. I didn't even know if she was willing to talk to me again after the shit I pulled with her. She probably hated me, considering our entire relationship was a lie, based on my actions.
Not that it mattered or anything, but Juri now had other fans in America, not just me. I doubted that I had a chance with her, nor did I deserve her in any way. Regardless, it still made me green with envy, seeing so many others posting creepy comments on her pictures.
The only one that
really
pissed me off, however, was the woman that looked somewhat like me. How dare Rosanna think she could swoop in and comment on Juri's feet? I didn't even know why she would subscribe to another woman's VIP page anyway. Had she come to terms with her sexuality faster than I did?
This wasn't a positive for me, but at least there was hope for Alana. I didn't want Rosanna to lay a finger on Juri, but if this was a sign that she was interested in women, at least my sweet intern now had the reason to believe they could really be together.
I tried to explain as much to Alana, but she didn't seem to buy it. She began pouting, unlike I had ever seen out of her before. Her eyes gazed over Rosanna's picture so many times, I thought she was going to burn a hole right through it with her glare.
"Rosanna never complimented
my
feet," she mumbled to herself, making an annoyed but pouty face. She then wiggled her toes, still only wearing her towel and her swimsuit. "My feet are cute too..."
I took a seat next to her before wrapping my arm around her fragile shoulders. "At least we know Rosanna has some sort of interest in women," I said, putting on a cheerful smile. "And you're right; your feet are cute. She'll definitely think so!"
Unfortunately, my message didn't seem to have the positive effect I expected it to. Turning her head, Alana made a grumpy face at me.
"She doesn't care about Juri or me! She only cares about herself! She's just doing this for attention! That's exactly how she is!"
Instead of arguing with her, or calling her immature, I decided to handle her cautiously, seeing as this stemmed from her deep-rooted insecurities. Rubbing her back firmly, I explained in a gentle voice, "You may be right. I trust your judgment. But let's at least keep an open mind, because when it comes to you, anything is possible."
Alana then gave me a suspicious look. "What do you mean, anything is possible when it comes to me?"
"Well, you may not have a high opinion of yourself, but I think you're capable of anything. So even if this Rosanna chick is just being selfish, I bet you, of all people, can make her fall in love with you."
Her eyes lit up just a bit. She was still skeptical, but she couldn't deny that I had faith in her. I could tell there were a million things she wanted to say, probably mostly arguments against my theory. Instead, however, she just sighed before putting her head on my shoulder.
I could tell she was still restless, because Rosanna was obviously on her mind. Instead of continuing the conversation right then and there, however, I tried to move us forward in the night, hoping she would cool off a bit.
"Quit moping around and go take a shower," I instructed while pointing her towards our bathroom. "It's getting late and you still smell like chlorine. Besides, we've had a little too much alcohol to make any rash decisions."
Alana tried to pout a little longer, but after emphasizing that I was her supervisor, and that I was giving her a direct order, she listened to my instructions and cooled off with a long shower. When she finished, however, she still wasn't ready for bed.
"What do you want to do now?" I asked, after coming to terms with the fact that she wasn't going to sleep.
Picking up her phone, she mumbled, "I kind of want to check Juri's VIP page again..."
Finally, I became fed up, and I had to do something. I knew there was no fixing her deep-rooted insecurities in one night, but just to put things to a rest for the time being, I let her know that I wasn't exactly pleased with her behavior either.
"Why don't you just drop it, Alana?" I said with a stern voice, glaring at her as she looked over from across the room. "Besides, until you tell Rosanna exactly how you feel, I don't think it's fair for you to judge her actions."
My words hit her like missiles, causing her to grow awkwardly silent. My intern then put her head down before pouting out loud, "Okay, fine..."
I then approached her once again, before placing both of my arms around her. Holding her in a tight embrace, I comforted her by suggesting, "Let's just have a girls' night tonight."
Alana's head perked up, and she stared at me with a bit of confusion. "A girls' night?"
"Yeah... Since you're not ready to go to bed yet, we can just do fun stuff like watch TV, eat snacks and paint each other's nails."
She made a face at me like she wasn't totally convinced. "Do I look like someone who enjoys doing that stuff?"
I shrugged my shoulders, not really understanding where she was coming from. "Um... yeah, you do... actually..."
Finally, she conceded, and dropped that annoyed look from her face. "Okay, fine... That does sound pretty fun..."
Eventually, Alana was able to let her guard down and just have a fun time watching TV while eating popcorn with me. There was no more need for alcohol; we were already having a good time without it, even though we were drunk earlier. We even discovered that we enjoyed watching the same shows.
To my delight, Alana did indeed allow me to paint her toenails. It was a good opportunity for me to compliment her feet and try to build her confidence after a night of massive revelations.
"You know what? You do have pretty cute feet," I expressed, practically massaging them with my thumbs. "I don't remember exactly what Juri's looked like, but I'm sure if Rosanna saw yours, she would love them too."
Of course, Alana wanted to argue with me, but seeing the sincerity in my eyes, she stopped herself and paused. "Karina..." she started, before taking a deep breath. "May I ask you a question?"
"Of course, Alana."
It was almost as if she was too shy to ask. "Why are you... so... nice to me?"
I looked at her and raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean? Why wouldn't I be nice to you?"
Unfortunately, an uncomfortable look remained in her eyes. "Just so you know... you've already made up for everything that happened in the past... You don't have to feel obligated to be nice to me anymore..."
Immediately, I furrowed my eyebrows and glared at her for having the audacity to think I was being nice to her out of obligation.
"Alana!" I shouted in a stern voice, causing her to freeze. "The reason I'm nice to you is because you deserve it. The mistakes I made in the past will never be repaid, because you will always deserve to be treated well."
I then patted her on the head before she could even make another argument.
"No talking back, either!" I exclaimed, shutting her down from letting out more of her insecurities. "You're a wonderful, beautiful, and intelligent woman. You deserve to be treated with nothing but the utmost respect. That goes for me, that goes for Rosanna, and that goes for anyone else you ever encounter for the rest of your entire life!"
It wasn't that I was expecting Alana to thank me or anything, but I was a bit surprised that she remained so silent. She sat there for a second, staring down into her own lap. And then, out of nowhere, she pulled out her phone and began typing relentlessly.
"What are you doing?" I asked, growing suspicious of her odd behavior.
Instead of answering me right away, she just kept typing until she finished whatever she was doing. Then, putting her phone down, she gave me a determined glare.
"Alana...?"
