As Salam Alaikum, reader dearest. My name is Salma Khatami, and I'm a young Persian Muslim woman living in the City of Ottawa, Ontario. I was born in the City of Shiraz, Islamic Republic of Iran, to Ali and Mariam Khatami. My parents moved to Ontario, Canada, in the summer of 1999. We've lived in the province of Ontario ever since. My parents and I became Canadians citizen six years after we came to this beautiful land, and I love Canada more day by day.
I love being Canadian, but I can never forget my Iranian heritage. One's origins matter, especially in today's world. Democracy and freedom are things that Canadians take for granted. I am twenty two years old, and I voted for the first time in the 2015 Federal Election. I supported the Liberals, and was happy to see their leader, the handsome and charismatic Justin Trudeau, win over Stephen Harper and his bigoted Conservative Party. Seriously, the creepy little man from Alberta and his cronies hate Muslims, and I was happy to see them lose.
Life is not easy for any minority in Canada, but believe me when I tell you that us Muslims have it worse than others. The Harper government spent many years demonizing us in the eyes and minds of the Canadian public. Seriously, I thought that if Harper had won a fourth mandate, the creep would have started concentration camps for Muslims. Hey, I am not putting anything like that past the damn Conservatives. To me, they're the Party of Hate.
Yup, I was one of millions of young Canadians who voted for the Liberal Party, tossing the forces of evil, as the Conservatives are called, out of power. As Canada boldly looks to a promising future as a racially and culturally diverse nation under a new leader, I find myself gearing up for another fight. You see, I am, um, pregnant. I will graduate from Carleton University with a bachelor's degree in Commerce in a few months. I am four weeks pregnant. Shocker, right?
I haven't even told my boyfriend Ahmed Hanfare yet. I met Ahmed two years ago while walking through the Atrium at school one night. The tall, handsome young Ethiopian student was dancing with a diverse troop of dance enthusiasts. Truth be told, I saw the brother's cute ass before I even noticed his face. Sorry, but I'm a sucker for a dude with a nice ass. Just like there are a lot of guys out there who absolutely can't resist a gal with a big butt. Turnabout is fair play if you ask me.
I stood there, watching the dancers as they moved about gracefully, and was surprised when one of them stopped and waved at me. I smiled as I recognized Rachel Tadesse, an Ethiopian chick I met in my Legal Ethics class. I walked up to Rachel and gave her a hug, and we chatted a bit. My eyes kept roving back to the tall, masculine gentleman with the cute behind and Rachel noticed that. Yeah, call me captain obvious.
Smiling, Rachel offered to introduce me to the cute brown lad with the nice behind. I gasped in shock and shook my head, but a laughing Rachel all but dragged me over to Mr. Sexy and thus, I met the man destined to change my life forever. Ahmed Hanfare, an Ethiopian Muslim student who, a few years ago, moved to the City of Ottawa from the City of Awasa, Ethiopia. When Ahmed shook my hand and looked into my eyes, my heart skipped a beat. Might have been my hormones talking, but I knew Ahmed was special.
