I was away at college a couple of years back, entering my sophomore year. I was feeling lonely one particular evening, so I found an online singles site. I ran across the profile of a nice young lady. She was in the same college town as I was and I decided to drop her a note telling her I saw her profile, was interested in her, and a little bit about myself. She responded back to me and a great friendship blossomed.
Super bowl Sunday of that year, she invited me over to hang out with her and her friends. I didn’t think much of it and agreed. She came over and picked me up, because I didn’t have a car. We got to her place and she introduced me to her friends. Sitting in the back corner was an African American woman named Thea and sitting next to her, holding her new born baby was another African American woman named Shayla.
The four of us sat around watching the game, chatting, getting to know each other and having some great laughs. Now, I know I went over there to be with Amanda, but I was having a hard time keeping my eyes of off Shayla. I knew my dad would disapprove if I brought an African American woman home for him to meet, but she really caught my eye.
When the game was over, I decided to head back to my dorm. Amanda gave me a ride and we talked about her friends. I tried not to sound obvious or attracted to Shayla, but Amanda knew. She said she’d give Shayla my number and e-mail address and that she wouldn’t care. But I tried to object because it was Amanda I meet first. But she said it was okay and that she only saw me as a friend anyway. I said okay, but maybe in the future. She smiled and said maybe.
I got out of the car and went back to my room. I changed for bed and sat down at my computer to check my e-mails one last time before I went to sleep. Sure enough, Shayla had sent me a note. She said she was flattered to learn that I had taken a sweet eye with her and that she was interested in getting to know me more.
Well, that’s all I need to know. And, for the next two or three months, she and I talked a lot on instant messengers, over the phone, and in person. We meet up a lot of times so I could give her some money for her and the baby. I really felt sorry for her, but proud of her at the same time. Trying to go to school and raise a baby at the same time. My heart really went out to her.
It was spring break week for Amanda, Shayla, and Thea, but I still had a week till mine. Thea invited Amanda to spend the week with her, but left Shayla out of the invitation. I then invited Shayla to stay with me for the week. She wasn’t real sure about this, with the baby and all, but I assured her it would be alright. So, Amanda and Thea dropped Shayla and the baby off at my dorm before they left.
